  • Can anyone speak to whether or not these would be overkill for walks/light jogs around my suburb in Perth? Mostly for the days it's raining I still want to try get my 10k steps in but last winter proved challenging coming home with soggy shoes/socks/feet. I've overdone it on researching sadly and too much info so fellow OzBargainers opinion will likely sway me :D

These are trail runners, built for trails/hiking. They will work for walking around the suburbs but the rubber is usually much softer and pavement will grind it down real fast. Ideally just grab normal runners unless you want to take these hiking

      • Yeh problem with runners is the soggy feet though :(

I've just now been diving down the rabbit hole of waterproof socks though!

        • -1

yea, u ideally dont want goretex/waterproof shoes unless ur running thru rivers and such -> your feet will end up much sweatier and u end up getting rashes.

          • +7

@AH: Goretex footwear are horrible for running through rivers. They take forever to dry once the insides are saturated.

Where they do excel is walking through shallow puddles, and in very damp grass (if wearing long pants).

        • +1

I wear trail runners for every day use. They'll be fine. The sole will likely wear out sooner than normal runners, but if you need something to keep your feet dry in shallow puddles, these are great.

Not great for hot and humid environments, as goretex shoes never breathe very well.

        • I wear trail runners when it's raining/wet. I love the extra grip from the trail sole, especially on wet grass.

They are my go to type of shoe for travel

    • -1

I'd consider leather boots and treat them with sno-seal.

    • the gortex ones will keep your feet wet as they will seal in the water.

      • +2

walking through shallow puddles is fine, but if its coming down the top/where the sock is I wouldn't recommend. have a look at salomon v8 or v9 gtx as the soles will last a bit longer

Follow in the boots of Cliff Young?
      Seriously, what a legend! https://www.badassoftheweek.com/young

I have these for Softball and find them super comfortable. As per the comments above, if your Waring them on hard bitumen or sidewalk they will likely ware down quick. For grass / gravel they have excellent grip wet or dry. Feel more like regular runners. Good price but seen them cheaper. Beware of eBay Chinese clones, they look the part but fall apart easily.

      • +1

Thanks for the info mate, much appreciated. I think I might just give it a whirl even knowing they'll likely wear down quicker - I won't be using them for the majority of the walks/jogs I go on, just the days it's already miserable out / rain incoming, and on those days I'll just jog/walk around the local park instead of sidewalks

Thanks everyone for their suggestions too!

        • +2

If you're just using them in winter you'll probably appreciate the extra warmth afforded by reduced breathability. And i wouldn't be too worried about getting sweaty feet as it sounds like you're more out for a bit of recreational activity than busting your ass.

    • I use my non-GTX Speedcross basically everywhere except for work and going out.

Trail runners are great for everything IME. I wear my Hoka Mafate Speed 4 and Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX all the time for walks/runs around the neighbourhood plus the occasional trail run. Wouldn’t worry about wearing the sole down, mine are still fine after extensive use. The grip and comfort is great.

I have a pair of these for the last few months. Have done multiple hikes/walks but mostly mtb riding in them, and I've done some significant riding in them. They are great, comfortable (not as comfortable as a quality pair of runners though), my feet dont get sweaty, easy to wear all day for me, and feet keep dry walking through wet grass and puddles etc.. I got mine from amazon for about $110, can recommend.

      • That is actually a good idea, using trail runners as MTB shoes!

        • they grip the pedals awesome, much better than normal runners, and I dont like clip ins for mtb

I want 2 of these so I can run both GTX's in SLI.

      • Ha ha. Good one. The shoes does come in a pair. So they are more ATI Fury Maxx than SLI GTXes.

I do overnight / multi day hikes and walks with these (but the non goretex version). Great shoe. Excellent grip.

Recommend the non goretex for most applications. If you want waterproof, use waterproof socks.

Generally water will find its way into your shoe one way or another and with goretex once it’s inside it can’t get out. Whereas a breathable / permeable construction the water goes in as easily as it goes out and as strange as that sounds it really works well. Only in extremely cold temperatures or persistent snow would this not be recommended.

  • ive read a lot of bad stories abt salomons these days in terms of QC - can anyone vouch one way or the other?

    • +1

I was looking into hiking boots a month or two back and read a lot of stories similar to what you mention - boots falling apart after only a few months/few wears. Story was Salomon was taken over by Anta sports in 2019, and since then quality has dropped and materials used aren't as good. I didn't buy in the end. Have owned a bunch of Salomon shoes over the years though - XA Pro 3d, Speedcross 4 and others. but most of them would have been bought before 2019.

      • Oh perhaps that explains my experience!

        • The other thing I was told in store was that they'd made the "fashion crowd" a higher priority, releasing different colours and new models regularly, rather than sticking to quality outdoor gear.

I’ll say this, I bought a pair of x ultra gtx and I seriously loved the look of them and they felt great. So good, I got home and started look at how to buy another backup pair immediately.

Anyway fortunately I didn’t find any bargains and didn’t buy the second pair, within about a month the heal fabric slit on one shoe, then the other (these were a casual pair of shoes I was just wearing around on wkends, previous ASICS under same conditions would see out a year no problem).

I’ve persisted with them but now even too brisk a walk to the local park in them would risk blister on my heals. Devo as they are still mint on the outside and the pullup lace is great.

      • I've just noticed the heal fabric has worn on mine too.

GTX is real grip, but RTX is real-time grip (with ray tracing)

    • GTX is not grip. It's waterproofing fabric.

Salomon Contagrip is the outsole rubber here.

      • r/whooosh

  • FYI GORE-TEX is a marketing gimmick. In fact in its current form GORE-TEX is nothing but a clever marketing using the same material as competitors (PU, polyurethane, fabrics) that they used to go around GORE-TEX's original patent. In short GORE-TEX is the knockoff of its own from decades ago, which by the way not only was not working but also was not exactly environmentally safe. If you buy GORE-TEX, you are paying for the exact same product and a badge.

Excellent video by FortNine explaining everything GORE-TEX (10min long): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGEzJJYiROk

You like saying 'Gore Tex,' don't you?

What’s with all the kids these days wearing Salomon trail shoes casually. Eshhhayyyy

      1. they look good
      2. eshays dont wear salomons lol
  • Sucks that they don't make size 15

  • I went to buy these but the price significantly jumps when I select my size 10.5, bummer. Still a great deal

    • When I posted, they had 5 in stock for 10.5, must be OOS for this price.

    • +1

you can still get that price.. select ' other sellers' and choose the option with the 127.49 price. This would be backorder, so you may have to wait for a while to get delivery.

I will update this in the description.

For day to day wear you don’t need the gortex lining.

You can wear them but your feet will likely sweat more in these than the non-gortex Salomon variants.

  • Do these run true to size? Doing a search online it seems many people have went a half size up. However, being a size 12 there is generally no 12.5 in most shoes including this one. Wondering if I should get the 12 or 13..

    • At time checking, only size 10, 11, and 13 are at 51% off.

  • salamons are more of your typical hipster get up than actual hiking shoes in vic these days

  • Deal is expired it seems came down to around 14% for all sizes

    • +1

Most sizes still look available to me - just have to check the "Other sellers on Amazon" section to find the $127.49 option.

      • Good to see someone reading the description.. +1 😁🫡

      • Not sure what I'm doing differently, but I only have two options in "Other sellers on Amazon"
        Amazon AU @ $219.99
        Amazone Germany @ $229.93

        That's across 4 sizes

        • Still shows 8.5 US for $127 to me
