Asus DSL-AX82U AX5400 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 VDSL2 Modem Router $339 + $16.50 Delivery ($0 VIC C&C) @ PCD International

130

If you're like me and need a good enough modem/router this is close to All Time Low.

Just walk in a Officeworks and request a price match, then you will get it down to $322.05.

Good price if you need a modem/router for FTTN and FTTB.

Hope someone can benefit from this tip.

those who have this router from Optus you are able to flash new firmware onto it to unlock it from Optus. from memory its like Asuswrt-Merlin or something

Who needs DSL modem these days? Is DSL still a thing?

Looked at my orders and I got my RT-AX82U in 2021 for $290. Unless you need the DSL, this is really an ancient, albeit still good, router but for very expensive. Am I missing something?

VDSL. It's used for NBN connections where you still have copper like FTTB in apartment buildings

      • Yeah like mine. I have a FTTN connection (its pretty crap) but NBN won't do any free FTTP/FTTB upgrade as it is part of strata. I am stuck here. VDSL router is the only thing that will work for me.

    • There are 622,000 houses still using VDSL on FTTN connections:

      https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/…

Still 5 years before they are all upgraded to FTTP.

  • I got one of these new for $120 of eBay, realized it is the UK version once I got it. I haven't set it up yet. hoping it isn't gimped due to different region.

    • I got the UK version off Amazon from a deal posted here on oz-bargain. WiFi performance was worse than the cheapo free router my ISP had provided me when WiFi first became a thing. Was unusable beyond 1 wall.

Created support tickets but was eventually told that it was the gimped version because of UK regulations. Begged them to give me the AU firmware so I could use it properly, was told that wasn't possible.

      • I have then UK version. No issues for me. What speeds are you getting?

        • Am on the 1000/50 plan, was getting 200mbps download in the next room with 1 brick wall in between. I sold it for $100 on FB marketplace the next month.

            @Prodev3r: Okay. I'm not a good comparison then. I'm on a 50/20 plan.

Brick walls are a real problem though. I had to mesh up my dad's place for a similar scenario. And Asus' Aimesh isn't as seamless to set up as they make it out to be.

    • Try changing the 5ghz wifi channel to one between 100 and 140

You should also get a wifi scanner app so you can pick a channel that isn't used by your neighbours

    Really good software on these

  • What's the difference between this and my $100 TP-Link archer?

      $253

Well done, I set myself up for that

I had 2 tp-link routers, an older one (forget the model #), an archer c7, they were both shit. Overheated, constant dropouts. Switched to an Asus when I was still using adsl2, don’t have issue with my networking any more. Have used the same router for like 7 years now. Can still stream 4K HDR wireless no hiccups.

Asus can generally run openwrt on most models, as well as acting as a mesh node with other Asus network products. Worth the extra $$$ imo.

Just because the price is low this is not a good value for money, you can buy a WiFi 7 router like TP-Link BE6500 at RRP which is still lower price than this and a much better router.

This is a Modem-Router combo, which is the simplest (all-in-one) option for anyone like me that has FTTN. There are very few decent options available for Modem-Routers, this being one of the best out there, and the same one I have at home. The one you linked is Router only.

For anyone interested, I showed a similar (expired) deal to JB Hifi in store last year, and they were happy to give me a similarly discounted price, from memory it was $320 or so.

Ah totally missed that this has a ADSL model built in, thanks for correcting.

While this is one of the better vdsl modem/routers, I would agree that it still isn't a great deal. You can run a separate modem and get a better router for less $$. I understand the form factor may not be desired, but most hybrid fibre folks still run the separate modem box.

  • Err.. $340 and no 2.5G ports??
Even flint 2 has 2x and picked that up for $180ish

    • Does it have DSL and quality firmware?

    Non DSL version $246.30

There’s better options available for higher prices, but still decent imo for at least a couple of years until more stuff has wifi 7

    • Can’t edit, note UK IMPORT. Apparently you can flash them though.

  • Had one of these for 3-4 years - it's a very decent modem/router. Very stable, reasonably configurable and good performance.
