Tips for Buying Refurbished Herman Miller Chairs?

I just bought a refurbished Herman Miller Mirra 1 chair for $1100.

Looking at the prices people post on Reddit in the US and Europe, mine looks way overpriced.

I did see their refurbishment process and it’s pretty thorough. They clean the meshes, replace the foam, and realign the base, among other things.

Is $1100 worth it? Or should I cancel and pay $2k for a brand new Mirra 2? Is the Mirra 2 that much better?

There are chairs for around $600 on marketplace but I don’t know what extent they have been refurbished or cleaned.

I know! But after an accident I have been strongly advised by my physio to get a very good ergonomic chair.

People spend more than $1100 on a new phone that lasts 3-5 years. These chairs last decades if you take care of them. If you use this chair for 10 hours a day, over ten years it’s 55c a day for good ergonomic comfort, especially after an injury. Never skimp on chairs and mattresses, that’s 2/3 of your working life.

      • If this is for your health you shouldn't buy refurbished, especially if you can afford it new.

      • Curious what accident necesitate ergonomic chair? Was it like whiplash?

Have you tried one .. ?
Worth it, even going brand new.

      • Yep I tried one in person today and it was noticeably more supportive than my current setup. But I only sat in it for 5 mins

        • For a thousand+ dollar chair, a five minute sit test seems… insufficient.

Not everyone who's owned one or used one at work loves them.

      • 100% worth it.

We bought our Aeron chairs brand new almost 10 years ago (for about $1200) and still in beautiful condition. Best investment ever! And tax deductible.

    • Something you might spend a huge portion of your day in (especially true if you work from home)? Yeah, seems like a no brainer actually.
That, and your mattress and shoes.

Typing this from my Herman Miller Aeron Remastered (not a flex, speaking from experience).
Not to mention their warranty is phenomenal. I've long had enough of buying shitty chairs every few years, I'm done.

  • Put it this way, Aerons at auction secondhand go for between $100-400 each, depending on condition and buyer 'interest'

  • Have you sat in the chair to check that it's actually comfortable for you?

You'll be sitting in 10 years of farts, no doubt. I wouldn't trust that it has been vacuumed in the last decade, definitely not refurbished. They'll just be office stock that was dusted off and sold.

Looking at the prices that people post on Facebook Marketplace in Australia, yours looks way overpriced. You've paid used Aeron prices for used Mirra 1.

Did you buy it refurbed from a retail store with a warranty or something? I hope that at least you got the armrest version for that much money.

Still, you got a comfortable chair that should last for years without degrading. And despite my comment above, I find that Aerons and Mirras feel similar enough.

  • I didn't see the point of buying a used aeron on marketplace when my Asian mate is selling them aeron remastered brand new for a couple hundred more.

  • I sold my Mirra 1 for $150 (2003) recently (everything still worked, the foam needed replacing), $1100 seems way overpriced for a used one.
I think you're better off getting a used Aeron for <$1000 or a used Embody ~$1600.

  • I don't know if secondhand chairs are worth it hygiene wise, and I think the Aeron and Embody are worth buying new, not sure about the other models, I see a lot of Mirras on the second hand market.
I got a Aeron Remastered Size C for $1500 ex display, and to me that was a bargain as it was essentially new with warranty. Best decision ever, I love it, the embody lumbar part didn't work for me.
If I was looking at second hand Mirra I'd try to find one that has been purchased not too long ago, and they have receipt and obviously in good condition.
    Good luck!
