Buy a $20-$30 mechanical keyboard instead. Many have RGB as well if that's important to you.

    • what do you recommend?

      • Take a peek on AliExpress. Lots of decent options there that aren't ludicrously overpriced

        • +2

          yeah there is a lot

that is why it is hard to know which one is good…
what keyboard do you recommend on aliexpress or amazon etc?

also a new upcoming tech is hall effects keyboard which may be the newest trend over mechanical keyboards
          https://www.google.com/search?q=hall+effects+keyboard&source…
what is your opinion of hall effects keyboard?

          • @pinkybrain: HE tech, including HE keyboards, have been around for a while now, but you should only be considering them if you're a Valorant or Overwatch sweat. The whole appeal of hall effect tech in keyboards is faster response times/switch actuation, which isn't a factor if you don't play games, let alone sweaty FPS shooters. You'll only be wasting (a lot of) money otherwise.

As to what keyboard I recommend? That depends on your personal preferences. Mechanical keyboards are quite a deep rabbit hole, but you don't need to go down far to understand what you want in your keyboard.

            What size/layout? TKL? 60%? 100%? etc.

Do you know what switch type you want? Clicky, tactile or linear?

Do you know what features you want? Wireless connectivity, RGB, hotswap-functionality (highly recommend)

Budget? The sweet spot is $50-$100 or so IMO, but there are cheaper options.

            • @CrispyChrispy: Full size/100% with numberpad
              tactile
              Wired if possible, backlit
Could you give me a few options at different price points?

            • @CrispyChrispy:

              What size/layout? TKL? 60%? 100%? etc.?

              100%,

Do you know what features you want? Wireless connectivity, RGB, hotswap-functionality (highly recommend)

RGB - must have RGB, prefer good RGB and not just some crap/average RGB,
this important cos I type at night and also previous k/b not RGB, so I want one

              wired/wireless (both) would be good,

              what is hotswap-functionality (highly recommend)?
if good then sure add that.

Do you know what switch type you want? Clicky, tactile or linear?

not sure, I don't have experience to know the difference to make a choice
              which do you prefer?

              Budget?

don't have set amount but I don't want to spend too much on keyboard (maybe around $100 bit more or less) because I am in process of getting pc parts to build a new PC..so the focus is put more money in the CPU, GPU, M/B.

@pinkybrain: With the switches - I'm a tactile person myself. It means when your key has actually pushed down far enough to activate you can feel it in the key. Linear means there's no feeling when they go down, regardless of whether they've activated or not - it's just smooth all the way. Clicky is both tactile, but with a noticeable clicking sound when they activate as well. Don't get me wrong on tactile switches though, as often they can also be heard much like a clicky switch, but usually a bit quieter.

I've actually got two switch types on my keyboard. I've got Gateron Baby Kangaroo v2 switches on all my modifier keys, as they have a slightly higher force required to activate (means they're less prone to accidental activation if I touch them, and it's more obvious when I actually do press them on purpose and they activate). On all my letter and numbers keys though I've got Kailh Box Jade Bamboo switches, which are still tactical but offer a bit less resistance on them, which is (generally) better for typing.

                • @Tacooo: what keyboard you got?
can you provide link for it as well as the switches you bought?

what is your opinion of keychron vs ducky? which is better to get?
and aliexpress is as good as those brands?

                  • @pinkybrain: Ducky is boring and have no innovation last I checked. Keychron isn't much better imho. Seen multiple Keychrons just die for no reason.

I personally bought a Keyboom Phantom 81, but that's without the numpad, so you're probably better off looking at the Phantom 98 which includes numpad. I just picked one I liked the look of, that had hot-swappable switches, and that had all the connectivity I needed. Lights are customisable with the software you can download on Windows.

                    Kiiboom Phantom 98
                    Kailh Box Jade Bamboo
                    Gateron Baby Kangaroo

$50 for a membrane keyboard is crazy. You're paying a premium for the brand more than anything else here.

I paid this much last year. It's not the best keyboard to type on (obviously) but I got it with my toddler in mind. I wanted to get something that was spill resistant. Hoping it won't be tested in that aspect but supposedly it works as advertised. Overall, there are lots of positive reviews of this keyboard out there.

  • ewwwwww, membrane. get a mechanical keyboard instead.

    • Membrane itself isn't the problem, it's the price tag for a membrane keyboard that is just nuts.

Insane to buy membrane (at that price point)
