1210

Part of this week new offers for the JB and TGG x Telstra mobile plans

As usual, you know what to do :)

Please do not keep trying to get your $99 refunded. If people keep doing this, this will raise awareness with Telstra and who knows the loophole might get closed or the ETC gets increased

For the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and iPhone 16, the max that you’ll pay is:
23/24 months x $800 + $99 = $865.67.

    • You sign up for Telstra plan, get the phone. $99/month, first month deducted immediately. Then you cancel the plan, Telstra charges you $800 as cancellation fees, you keep the phone.

      • Thanks.

  • What sort of changeover price do you think there would be from trading in a P9 Pro XL (256GB) to a P10 Pro (128GB) upon release if there is some offer?

    • +1

You'll probably get about $600 trade in credit on the official Google store, based on my experience looking into the same thing with P8P to P9PXL.

There's usually some sort of discount as well, so I guess you'd pay about $800 to $900 on top of the trade in.

  • +2

Bought one today, upgraded to 256gb, initial price difference of 147. Was able to get $100 off and also apply the $30 perks discount for a difference of $17. Also made another large purchase so this may have contributed to their generous discount. Try your luck

    • Well done, good use of the Perks voucher, will keep it in mind! Obviously the $300 is the invoice price of the phone and therefore qualifies. Let me know what you think about the size & weight of the XL….it's the one thing that's scaring me off.

    • -2

Hi mate, could you explain how you got $100 off and the $30 discount
      Cheers

    • +1

Unless a price match be interested to know how you got $100 discount, if you did…

    • They wouldn't let me upgrade

    • I was able to upgrade as well, but had to pay 147. Couldn't bargain or discount coz I had nothing else to buy. I didn't have the patience to bargain or shop around as well coz my phone died and I needed one urgently. Unlucky me, they could not add my payment details to my old telstra account, not sure perhaps I am currently a boost customer? And they couldn't create a new account as well. They asked me to go to Telstra to try to get my account fixed, which even they couldn't do. 2 days of tries and nothing worked. At the end, had to ask wifey to get it for me.

TLDR; Telstra sucks, can't wait to cancel.

  • I know there’s a note regarding the deal dues not apply other pixel models, but has anyone tried it on a p9p 256gb for example?

    • Signed up today and they loaded a gift card with $1850. And talking to them seemingly that gift card could be used for any Pixel phone. I got the XL 256gb.

    • Yeah i got the 256 gb and paid $150 difference

  • As its just a Gift Card… Can I use it to buy an iPhone by oaying the difference??

    • No. The JB employee will use the gift card towards the Pixel phone. You can’t ask to change it towards another phone

You will need to sign up to the other iPhone promo if you want to sign up to an iPhone 16 deal

      • +1

Thanks mate… Looking for iPhone 16 Pro Max… So may be have to wait for a while..

      • What if i got this Pixel Pro XL using this deal, returned it for a store credit and used the credit to purchase the iPhone 16 Pro Max? Do you think its possible?

        • +1

I tried it today the sales won’t let me do it saying if I return it for gift card he will only give me $1100 instead of $1850, I would have preferred the 16 pro max too…

          • @ozvictor: interesting. Wonder why that is if you are returning a brand new product shouldnt it be credited at the advertised price? anyway thanks for the info!

  • +4

Just picked up the phone. Asked if they can do any better for 256GB variant. Sales person he'll see what he can do. Ended up paying an getting it for $1887 - $1850 gift card = $37 to upgrade.

    Pretty happy with that.

  • I was interested till I read the comparison review. The Google Tensor G4 chip is not even close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or the newer Elite in the S25+. Am I reading this wrong? Why would people buy this phone with performance worse of all flagships amongst brands?

    • +1

Because pure performance is not the most important thing (unless it's what you look for in a phone). Google doesn't have the best numbers in benchmarks, true. But that doesn't mean you will notice it on the day to day. Tensor has many other features related to AI and photography, that SD and other don't. So you need to compare everything as a package, and not just the chipset

    • Because it doesn't matter, any flagship phone today is more than fast enough.
Even budget handsets like the G85 at a tenth of this price, perform just fine in normal daily use.

      • Disagree there, I have a S20Fe with SD865 and it's been amazing for almost 5 years and still fast. Bought my wife the A54 and it's a complete dog, slow and not responsive. I think it goes a way for longevity to get good chip to start with.

  • -3

While I am tempted, I'm more afraid of the cancellation 'trick' not working and I end up paying $2,400.

    • Why would it not work if it's written into the t&cs?

      • It appears not to be in the T&Cs though, according to other posters.

    • Lol .. amateur ozbargainer .. relax mate .. there are frequent deals like this .. just follow the instructions, relax, and don't do anything stupid.

      • -1

That's what I thought with the OfficeWorks gift cards at 10% off at Coles before Christmas - the staff member at the til somehow mixed in some different cards as he activated them.
I then realised that I had paid $105 for each of those particular cards (instead of $90) with a value of $100!
Even though it was not my error, and even though I hadn't left the service desk, the manager said I would have to contact the card company to apply for a refund.
The card company refused to give a refund until my third attempt.

    • +2

That's understandable. It sounds like a dubious trick because it is one. Nevertheless, it's been happening regularly (as can be seen in the several previous posts) and people have consistently reported everything works out for them.

If you're an over-worrier like me, avoid it, because it's legally dubious at best. (Even though in practice it seems JB/Telstra turn a blind eye.) People on here don't seem to understand that the terms of the deal (search "referred to as" to see the problem) also form a contract, and that you don't have to sign something to agree to a contract, it suffices to undertake a relevant action, like buying something. It would probably cost JB/Telsta more to actually enforce these terms than they loose from people taking advantage of this buy-and-cancel scheme, though, so this reasoning mostly serves to trouble uptight people like me. (Let me be clear, people itching to downvote: I'm not saying this scheme doesn't work in practice, I'm saying the means by which this discount is obtained is legally unsound, and it only works out for you because JB/Telstra turn a blind eye.)

Also, it has been reported on a previous thread (by a staff member) that you can ask the staff about the maximum (say, you notice the discrepancy on the printed receipt), and they will say that $800 is the maximum repayment. If they do this, you're on much safer footing because that statement is an additional representation which they are now bound by. (But they also say that if you indicate you will cancel, they will refuse the sale, so don't indicate you will cancel if you want to take advantage of the deal.)

Thanks for the excellent reply, nayru257.

      • Here's a quote from the case Pacific Carriers Ltd v BNP Paribas (2004) HCA 35 I read in this law review article from 2005. (Emphasis mine.)

The meaning of the terms of a contractual document is to be determined by what a reasonable person would have understood them to mean. That, normally, requires consideration not only of the text, but also of the surrounding circumstances known to the parties, and the purpose and object of the transaction.

  • +2

    Thanks very much OP.
Signed up and secured the phone at lunch, service cancelled by afternoon tea and $766.xx invoice paid by home time.

    • + $99 ?

      • Yep

  • What reason did people give for cancellation?

    • You don't really need a reason, just say change of mind or something

  • How does the Exynos 5400 fair in terms of cellular reception? Thinking if its worthwhile waiting for a deal on S25+ which uses Snapdragon X80 which seems to have 60% more connection speeds, atleast as per this video

  • I went into gg and looked at t&C (via QR code) for the $99 Telstra plan and there was not specifics relating to cancellation fees. 🤷

  • +6

Just got the pro XL 256gb from JB today, the sales was nice, I asked for a discount and I only paid the difference of $20 to upgrade to a 256gb model. I then pick a random mug valued at $10 and use the perk $30 discount and have a free upgrade to 256gb. Very happy. Thanks op for posting.

    • Still not sure exactly what you did or paid, but here, take my upvote.

      • +2

The 256gb model should be $1997 which is $150 more than the 128gb model (128gb is $1847). I asked for a discount and the sales said the best he can do for the 256gb is $1870, so only $20 more for the 256gb. The sales gave me a gift card worth $1850 to checkout when I sign up for this plan. But I also redeemed my $30 perk discount so end up with a free upgrade from 128gb to 256gb

        • Gotcha, thanks. Makes sense now. And also why you bought a $10 coffee mug. If I decide to grab this phone I'll aim for the same deal!

          • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: Because the perk voucher worth $30 but I only have to pay a $20 difference, so I grabbed another random $10 item and still pay nothing at the end.

  • Does anyone know how long this sale is going to last?

  • Do you get to see the voucher repayment fee before you sign up? Also, does cancelling the mobile phone contract affect your credit rating?

    • +1

I did the 256gb xl it's listed on their system as one of the possible models for the $1850 voucher (go figure in the advert it's excluded). Grabbed it didn't haggle (hand over ozb badge). Price was about $130 paid.

Multi print outs of $800 gift card in t&cs no mention of $1850 ever being received (although she did note on credit check system I think)

      • That's interesting to know, that the 256GB is eligible without question.

  • Hi Guys, I'm new to OzBargain. How can I purchase the phone for $865.67. I don't have experience with purchasing mobile phones from JB Hi-Fi. Also buying phones with mobile network offer. I got confused after looking though all the comments. Is it possible to make a guide on how to use this offer, @BargainsGrabber ?

    • +1

Hey mate, I’ve added onto the guide that’s linked in the description

      • +1

Thanks, @BargainsGrabber. Also, I saw some comments saying that they where able to get the 256GB and 512GB versions of the phone with this offer by paying the gap, although the offer page says only for 128GB. Is this some store specific thing or act of a kind store employee?

        • +1

I'm at a jb now and just asked about the 256gb variant and yeah they're happy to accept the gap $150 difference.

          • @jerdp: Amazing! I'm planning on heading down to JB tomorrow. Let's whether my local store will be happy to do the same.

            • @astrogogo: $1,012.59 is the final total for the 256gb storage variant.

          • @jerdp: Same here, went in yesterday and got this agreed. However, Telstra's system failed to accept my card, all 3 of them, and even their support couldn't get my order in. So will have to try again today, *sigh.

  • +4

My friend was able to go in later and get this exchanged for an iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB by paying $30 extra. That's the real bargain here imo if you are able to get it. Might depend on the store and employee you get.

    • Does this involve returning the Pixel 9 Pro XL for a credit and then using that credit for the iPhone 16 Pro Max?

      • +1

That is what the transaction will be. But if you tell them that you want to return the phone for credit they might be very hesitant. If you tell them that you want to exchange it they might be more willing. Ymmv of course.

    • I tried two stores and no luck

  • What drop proof cases are being bought for Pixel 9 pro XL please? I didn't think much of the Google ones in store. There are heaps on Amazon so hoping to narrow down search if anyone has a recommendation please?

    • I got the Peak Design Everyday Case. Best one I found that works for my needs

  • Has anyone in Perth been able to negotiate a deal on the 255GB version of the XL phone?

Been into a couple of JBs today and neither would offer anything below the ticketed price.

  • If anyone has been able to exchange the phone to different model after purchase, can you share a receipt please?

    • Yes done that no issue

      • What kind of exchange you did? Would you be able to share receipt?.

  • Maybe a dumb question - What the invoice shows?

$0? Or full value and payment made with gift cards?

    • Full amount less gift cards used

    • The latter :)

    • +1

Nice… though just reiterating the OPs advice in the description:

Please do not keep trying to get your $99 refunded. If people keep doing this, this will raise awareness with Telstra and who knows the loophole might get closed or the ETC gets increased

      • I don’t think bold works anymore. I need to use the #header style now

        • This loophole has been around for years including contact Telstra to get the first month refunded. Why is there a sudden change of heart?

  • -1

Any deals on 9 Pro plsss

    • +1

There was a similar deal on the 9 Pro a few weeks ago, and my feeling is that it will come back again sooner or later. The iPhone 16 deal returned for a second time within a month.

I ended up getting this phone today. Was able to get the 256GB version for only $20 changeover. Now I'm hoping for a temporary drop in the outright price in the Pro XL within the next couple of weeks - to try my luck in getting the deal sweetened :)

  • is someone kind enough to tell me about "the method" i need a new phone and financially struggling so the method will come in hand for me

    • There is a Step-by-step Guide in the Wiki linked in the OP. You should be aware that there is a credit check performed as part of the process.

By the way, have you seen the very good deals on the Motorola phones running recently? Very solid budget-friendly deals.

      • would new motorola phones be a better phone and camera then my current Iphone X?

      • also, is this even a deal to keep the phone and only pay $890? or to return the phone and get a gift card?? very confused

    • Here's my interpretation of the process which worked for me:

      From how I understand it:
1.You go in-store JB/GG - sign up for this specific mobile deal + plan > pay $99 upfront on sign-up.
2.Later on, you contact Telstra support via online chat/phone call and request early cancellation of your plan.
3.Your Telstra account will be billed the max early termination fee of $766 ish but you get to keep the phone.

But I think today is the last day for this deal. But as mentioned in the earlier comments, expect similar deals on release of newer models in a couple months or so.

      • right, so large discount on the phone, and then find your own sim plan

  • Bought one and regret it. This phone is so bad. Waiting for a s25 Ultra deal that would allow me to trade in my pixel

    • +1

can you pls clarify in what way its so bad? We are keen to know :)
