If you don't care about the carrier, isn't the Voda deal better? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/904241 24m works out to be $82.70 a month.

Instead of being a condescending Internet troll, you could just explain it?

          Read the OP post…

Instead of being lazy, you could perhaps click the link in OP’s description?

            • +12

@kojihama: Read the description… you clearly didn’t read the rest
I’ve already provided the calculation for you 🤦‍♂️

For the iPhone 16, the max that you’ll pay is:
              23/24 months x $800(telstra.com.au) + $99 = $865.67.

        • -1

Up and down votes like a new bride's nightie.

I’m sick of you people! You’re nothing but a bunch of fickle mush-heads!
          Give us hell, Quimby!

          User name checks out.

    • +33

      No
You sign up to the iphone 16 128GB in store, port your number
jb will discount the phone to $0

total cost when you sign up in store will be $0 + $99 (first month fee)

when you get home, request to cancel the service ~$800

      total cost is $800 + $99 = $899

with the voda deal you posted you're paying $1,384.37

      • +9

Thank you @Heybargain appreciate you being nice to those who aren't in the know.

      • +15

Thanks. Although how this deal works was explained to me before, your explanation is much clearer.

I don't understand why every time this deal comes up an explanation like yours is deliberately omitted from the deal description. And then when people inevitably ask about how to actually get the deal, then the usual suspects neg and jeer at them or send them on a journey back in time to scour the comments looking for the answer.

Your excellent explanation should be included in the deal description.

      • The cancelling fee is $733.34

        • +2

The cancelling fee varies. I gave worst case scenario.

        • Wouldn't it be $766.67 instead?
          I worked it out as $800 / 24 = $33.33 per month remaining, and as you've already paid for the first month isn't it 23 months remaining so it's $33.33 x 23 = $766.67?

I guess it's also most value to cancel as close the 2nd monthly charge as possible since you've already paid for the first month ($99).

      • Will you still receive a phone invoice after cancelling it, so that you can claim it for a tax return?

        • +1

You get invoice when you buy something not when cancelling and no they will not send police to take back the invoice when you cancel

    • +1

That means previous deal was the better one with $1400 off on iPhone 16 range:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/902167

      • Yup - and people were able to get the price difference refunded

Sadly I missed out if I knew this was going to happen lol

        • what do you mean by price difference refunded?

          • @ARD: When people signed up to that deal, the iPhone was originally at $1349. JB ran a sale to match the Big W price and people could get the difference refunded
And then the price wars started

            • @BargainsGrabber: So For iphone 16 pro 256 gb,
              The calculation was 1997-1440+ 99 + 800 = 1350 Something. Right?
Anything on top of that ?

              • @ARD: Pretty sure it was $1400 off. The price then further dropped and since you paid at the original price with the $1400 gc, you could get the difference refunded

                • @BargainsGrabber: Damn!! Was not knowing that people got the refunds in this way as well.

                  • @ARD: Yup - it was only allowed if it’s within 14 days since you first bought it.

Don’t worry I didn’t sign up either so we’re in the same boat :)

                    • @BargainsGrabber: have seen a 13-day iPhone refund get knocked back by the manager called to approve the fund disbursement - so just have to hope luck is on side!

                    • @BargainsGrabber: Call around different stores - many give the refund under the 30 day return window instead of the 14 day price drop guarantee window.

                    • +1

@BargainsGrabber: Legend Mate ! I got the price difference refund! Thanks a lot

        • Doesn't it work out to be the same in both cases? The ETC + pro-rata first month's plan payment.

The previous plan is better because of the subsequent price drop in the handset?

        • +1

Thanks @BargainsGrabber, live chat said only 14 days, but called the store and they said up to 30 days for price drop guarantee. Heading in now to get the price difference back as GC and card split!

      • After they have signed you up for the Telstra contract, the system issues an gift voucher for $1400.
You then walk over to the register can buy the iphone outright with the voucher.
It can be any iPhone 16 during the last deal.

    • Where? Can’t find this deal on 16 pro.

      • +1

Maybe I read it wrongly from the photo shared.
It said as “$1150 off iPhone 16 handset range”

        My apologies

  • and if i want 256gb i just pay the difference?

    • That’s correct

      • can they price match too?

    • @Frozensage did you try? And how much the difference

  • -7

If i have done this already how do i get 3 more? I did 3 on the first deal

    • +1

I wouldn’t risk it and also why do you need 6 handsets?

      • +5

        Reselling for profit I assume

        • -3

Update i managed to get 2 more, total is now 5 with this deal. Managed to lockin mobile monster $1070 before it dropped. Cheers to all the heros who find these deals.

  • -1

I just don't understand, cancel it at 1st month really worth it? You will be credited check when you sign up. Why not use same chance to apply a good credit card?

    • I got the first month $99 refunded as well.

      • how did you get the first month refunded as well?

        • i didn't use the jb sim and just asked on jb online chat.

    • Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be much easier to pass a credit check for a phone plan compared to a credit card?

Then there's the people who just have no interest whatsoever in getting a CC (believe me, they exist) or just want a phone and that's it.

    • The regular price of the iPhone 16 in its country of origin is around $1,100, so it's just a marketing tactic used by the carriers.

  • hi want to ask is jb hifi mobile full telstra network like boost mobile or like aldi? i work fifo in WA comparing aldi telstra doesnt have signal on site but boost one has plenty coverage

  • Can the 30$ perks voucher be used with the 256gb version?

    • +2

      No. Perks exclude Apple products

      • :(

  • What happens to the mobile number when I cancel the contract? Will they allow porting out or what happens?

    • i guess that's why ppl use a burner sim for this purpose so don't risk your main number

      • so the question now is.. what is the cheapest burner sim you can get?

        • +3

          Aldi $5 sim
Or if you're eligible and have a compatible phone sign up to the optus free network trial https://www.optus.com.au/customer-extras/network-trial

          • @Heybargain: I've tried. You got the new number so you can't port your current number to optus

            • @hero1211: Yeah, we're talking about getting a brand new number. Get the new number, then port that to jb for this deal. Cancel the number afterwards and you'll still keep your existing number.

              • @Heybargain: Oh, i thought we were talking about porting the number from jb to cancel the contract. You don't need to port in to get the deal, you can sign up for the new number, i've done it. So now i'm looking for a cheap way to port the number out to cancel the contract

          • @Heybargain: 2nd alternative if no aldi nearby?

    • +2

If you are using a mobile number you want to keep, instead of cancelling just port it out to who you want to be with. This will also trigger the cancellation and you keep the number.

      • This. It is the most simple process.

      • When you say trigger the cancellation, do you mean this will generate the $800 cancellation fee.

        • +1

          Yes $800 or $766 if you've paid the first month's $99.

          • @CodeXD: i am due to pay $800 from the last deal. Telstra gave option to pay by ..date or will DD.

    • The idea is to port out. By porting out means you are cancelling the contract.

  • +1
  • Can we use gift card to pay for that $800?

    • +1

No. This is billed by Telstra and you need to use your debit/credit card

  • Damn. No store nearby from me.

    • +1

TGG is also running the same deal. You can try that

  • for the models like IP16 plus, what happens?

    • You can pay the difference over and above this offer

  • Double checking that we still get the usual iPhone 16 warranty if we access the phone through this method then cancel the plan?

  • Were people able to cancel via the Telstra chat?

What’s your reason to make it quick?

    • Just say you're no longer using the service. They don't make a fuss about it.

      • +1

Yep been a few years since I have done this. Easiest one I have ever done. 10mins in store, 5 mins on chat. $766 and they said they will refund the part use of the month so hopefully most of the $99

  • Can you get the iPhone 16 and later exchange it for Pro any pay the difference in JB? Receipt shows you pay for the phone with GC. Should work yeah?

    • Usually you can pay the difference. I'd go into the store and give it a shot.

      • +2

Success! No drama at all - they allowed me to upgrade to iPhone 16 Pro and pay the difference ($120 price after price matching Costco).

        • How was the difference $120? Isn't this $1149 and the pro $1529?

          • @immortanwayne: Yeah want to know as well. Did they notice you get the phone via promo and still allow? I want to upgrade to 16 256gb no need pro

  • -1

Would you be able to flip this for a profit?

    • Yeah you prob could. Mobile monster are offering $980

      • +1

That's not heaps, whether or not it's worth the credit check depends on individual I suppose

    • Probably not worth the effort. Driving Uber for 2 hours yields the same return.

    • I will give you $700 for that.

  • +1

So if claiming trs it would be from $1149?

  • Is it strictly port in or can we can get new number at jbhifi?

  • Worked wonderfully today. Thanks!

  • -1

If i buy the Iphone 16 and sign up to the $99 monthly deal for 24 months, i presume that i would be liable for $99x24 =$2376. Where does this figure of $800 come from? ( Telstra cancellation state that i have to pay what's owing on the handset). I just don't want to get caught with a large bill in trying to save some money on purchasing this phone
