Can Dealers Further Discount a Car with Fleet Pricing?

Hi all,

We are planning to buy a new EV using novated lease and went for a few test drives. We don't have much experience buying new cars and this is our first time researching and thinking about using a novated lease.

We are at a stage where we decided on a car and got a quote from the dealer and they offered fleet price for the car (due to novated lease). From what the dealer told us, it is about $5000 off the car. However we are unsure if this is the best price we can get.

We assume that the fleet discount is from headquarter and not from the dealer themselves, in that case, we thought that they may still be able to give us some discount/extra features, just like customers paying a car in cash (I believe they would usually ask for discount off RRP)? If so, how much discount should we be asking for? Please share your experience!

Obviously we don't really understand how the car sales industry works… so just thought to ask :)

Thanks for your time.

  • Can Dealers Further Discount a Car with Fleeting Pricing?

What did they say when you asked them?

We asked but they expect us to give them a deposit straight away. So we thought we better do more research before confirming.

      • They said "sign the contract and pay the deposit and then we can discuss it"?

        • Didn't mention the contract… But something along the lines of pay a deposit to show your commitment so I will ask the manager.

@birdnw: lol. that isn’t a thing. That guy just wants a sale. If they are not willing to talk a deal until you put a deposit down, tell them to kick rocks and take your business elsewhere.

Second of all, are you entitled to “fleet pricing” through your employer or are you actually looking to buy a “fleet” worth of vehicles? If not, if I was the sales guy, I would tell you to kick rocks.

            • @pegaxs: I am entitled to fleet pricing through my employer-that is confirmed.

@birdnw: Then he is either being a clown or you misheard what they said.

Haggle comes before deposit. Deposit is to seal the haggle point. What incentive do they have to haggle if they are holding your deposit as ransom.

You like them so much that you are going to put deposit down for a second one.

      Fleet pricing is usually fixed

      The price is discounted already.

Dealers don't want you to pay in cash. They want you to use their finance department.

I once got told no way on a car I was lowballing, but if I used their finance, maybe.

    • They did refer me to the finance department too, the price is the same as the fleet pricing though…

If the price is only for a short period of time, then yes it is fleeting…..

  • What are you trying to achieve? How much time have you spent trying to get the "Best Price"? Novated lease companies will procure the vehicle for you. I'm surprised they haven't already quoted you. Best case scenario you save the procurement fee. Saving you 50 cents pre-tax a week…. If you are happy with the car, just buy it. Also is novated lease the best option for you?

    • The NL company did give me a quote after I provided the cost of the car to them. I didn't know about procurement fee but since we have gone for a test drive already, we thought it would be easy to get a quote.

As an Ozbargainer, I guess I just want to know how to get a better deal?

  • What's the car? And which nl company?Sometimes it's better to put a deposit yourself and then sort the lease. That gets you in the queue if there is one. Nl company then pays the dealership the order price and the dealership gives you back the deposit. Well that's how it worked for me for an ev

    • It's an EV costing about 90K and with one of the bigger NL company in Aus.

The dealer did say about putting a deposit and ordering one first too… but since we are all new to this, we are worried that something may go wrong with NL and would like to make sure everything will work for us before confirming with the dealer.

  • Can't say for certain but most dealers have various levels of fleet discount so it's likely they could further discount but it's also likely that they won't. That level of fleet discount will be at the dealer level. To get manufacturer discount you get that direct, not via the dealer. eg when I was working for a OEM supplier we'd get their top level fleet discount, no GST and then we'd claim a rebate directly from the manufacturer as well.

  • Is part, or all, of that “$5000 Off” actually the gst component? It’s a long time since I’ve had a novated lease, but as I remember the purchase price was ex-gst.

    • I think none of it is the GST component from looking at it.
I think you are right that we don't need to pay GST now, but we will need to pay when we buy it out.

  • What car? You get a Camry, they will give you $100 off, you get a bz4x, they will welcome you with a red carpet.

    • It's not a popular car. It's an EV around 90K.

      • Eqs, ix3, i4, eqb, used rz, ix5 used, i5 (limited batch under lct) to name a few.

        All are very negotiable

  • What’s your price range? From what I’ve heard, the maximum fleet discount you can usually expect is around 5% to 10% off the RRP. You might also get some extra accessories or a fancy plate if you’re lucky and push really hard. But in the end, it all comes down to you and the dealer. There’s no universal rule. If it’s not a top-selling model, you might have more room to negotiate. But if the model is selling really well, you shouldn’t expect much of a discount further than fleet pricing.

    • I have read about 5 to 10% too. The car is around 90K.

I don't think that it would be a top selling car but it's a relatively new model so I don't know if it would impact on the pricing/discount. I just wanted to find out more before we make our final decision :)

No point beating around the bush. All cars are different. That pricing point can be an ix3 or a ev9 base model. Ix3, yes, go hard on negotiating, ev9, not as much.

    • maximum fleet discount you can usually expect is around 5% to 10% off the RRP

It depends on the volume the fleet buys. When my ex was getting a new Commodore every 12 months on the government contract it was about 40% off. Holden & Ford used to totally rip-off retail buyers.

      • When my ex was getting a new Commodore every 12 months on the government contract

What an absolute waste of taxpayer money, even with the discount. A total rip-off of tax paying Australians.

Couple videos might be of interest discussing pitfalls of NL. Not everyone is aware of.

    Maybe you are, I wasn’t.

Such as will you be with your current employer for 3-5 years and why may make NL an issue.

  • you said you are using a Novated Lease. What price is the novated lease company offering?

  • I call this one BS, no mention of the vehicle make model or price SO BIG BS on this OP
