The price is quite good for half a terabyte of storage. Just that this is still a flash drive, not an SSD, not sure if it's a good thing to have such a big capacity. It would get excruciatingly slow if you're writing to the full capacity or writing a lot of small files. And would not be near reliable compared to a real SSD. Though if you're using it for read-intensive operations (after taking an eternity to copy the files in), it can be quite a good experience.

I have a 256GB model in my bag (from a OzB post years ago) and it's nice to have one on hand. But later swapped with a tiny 2230 enclosure instead which is way better in every way (except the price, which is about twice as expensive).

    • link for the enclosure and 2230 ssd you bought?

      • This exact model: https://www.amazon.com.au/JEYI-Enclosure-Direct-Attached-Wir…
I bought it on Taobao for just over CNY100.

I'm sure there's newer or similar version than this now given it's out of stock on Amazon AU.

It's made entirely out of aluminum so choose the drive wisely. The chip is not getting hot, but the drive can be very!

    • Interesting approach and agree about the write speeds and capability.

I have a spare 512GB SSD so just need to find a decent enclosure.

      • Given how cheap ASM2464PD enclosures can get nowadays, give it a try. It's really fast on Thunderbolt devices. (well, unless your Thunderbolt host is very old, then you'll get compatibility issues).

        • Avoid this chipset if you can. High power use, high heat generation, can be buggy with more frequent disconnects due to less stringent quality control from many Chinese manufacturers. (USB 3/4 is a mess of different protocols). Get the Intel JHL7440 enclosures if you have Thunderbolt 3/4/5 and don't care about USB 3 and prior compatibility. Because they have to license this chip from Intel, quality control is more strict. More rock solid stability and enclosures using this official Intel chip (The makers of Thunderbolt) shows better stability. Intel chip is just a tad slower but makes up for it with less heat and power use and more stability.

          • @Dollar Dreamer: The problem for Intel chipset is the limited compatibility especially on newer hardware, and mostly, expensive. Also it doesn't really do NVMe controls, while with ASM2464PD, it can do NVMe conversion to UAS means even if TB/USB4 doesn't handshake, you still get fallback from USB 2.0 all the way to USB 20Gbps. Funnily enough, on Apple Silicon Macs, ASM2464PD may present better performance and stability than Intel's older TB3 chipsets.

ASM2464PD's only problems today are either bad TB compatibility with older TB3 hosts (which almost always fallback to USB 10Gbps) and end-product quality (not the chip itself, but rather because it's cheap, all kinds of OEM start to flood in the market). If you choose a good implementation (great firmware, with a quiet fan, full metal enclosure with proper thermal contacts), it's rock solid.

    • So what are the actual speeds? My patriot 512gb usb hits about 600mbs read and write

        • I really wish there was some kind of law that made them publish those numbers on the packaging thats pathetically slow I have USB 2 drives that are faster haha

If you need a fast one those patriot drives are really good but of course will cost more about $15-20 but that was worth not watching it copy files for a few hours haha

They have a 1tb sized one also

          • @Vyviel: Now that I’m using portable SSDs mostly, I no longer recommend normal flash drives to my friends anymore unless there’s a specific use case for them.

There are flash drive-sized products that actually uses SSD controller and proper NANDs. Like CZ80/88/880 and newer models, or some highend custom drive makers like ones from Chipfancier WTG series. But price wise nothing beats m.2 + enclosures now.

  • Showing as $60.50 for me.

  • That expired fast :(
