Oh this is new? I've had access for the past week and thought it was normal. There's a link to Sora in the sidebar on ChatGPT for me.
You get 6 prompts per day and it gives max 4 image variants per prompt.
And it stacks with ChatGPT's 3 images.

The limits only about 5 as well so it's not a fantastic offering. Free is free but so is image generation with co-pilot even if it's lower quality.
Gemini on Android is also free for images. There is an image limit per day but it must be pretty high, in casual fartarsing around I've never reached it.

using image generation in chatgpt is different because you can ask it to generate the image again, but with specific changes e.g. make the cat blue it will do that and keep everything else the same if you ask it to. you can also copy then paste previous images it generated and ask the same thing, or paste any image and ask it to modify recreate etc.

on the app I never saw the "Sora" option which you can see on desktop browser.I never signed up to Sora because up until recently it was paid or nothing.
now clicking on Sora when logged into chatgpt free account did auto sign me into Sora and I was able to get 6 free images.now I understand this is what you meant. it's valid.
