Suggest a Suitable Heat Pump Dryer for My Current Set up

Hi guys,

Most recent (and OzB favourite) heat pump dryer went up for sale again and I have been in the market to buy a new dryer. Have read that heat pump dryers are the way to go in terms of cost savings on electricity bills.

For context, we live in an apartment with limited space in the laundry (but enough space to either wall mount or stack a dryer). Since heat pump dryers are generally not stacked due to their sheer weight, I was looking at potentially purchasing the above OzB favourite but noted my current washing machine LG WV5-1208W Slim Series would not be able to mount this unit due to the depth difference:

LG WV5-1208W:

Width 600 mm
Depth 535 mm

Whereas the specs on the heat pump dryer in questions are:

Width 595 mm
Depth 600 mm

To this end, can anybody please recommend a suitable alternative for another heat pump dryer within similar budget/range or am I SOL and have to opt for traditional vent dryer?

Thanks in advance

I always use Appliances Online to search for things by size, it makes appliance shopping so much easier.

The only heat pump dryer they seem to have that is 535 or smaller depth is this one:

I heard they shouldn't be wall mounted, but stacking should be fine? I have a Bosch Series 8 heat pump dryer stacked on a front loader washing machine with one of those rubber mats in between and has been working great without issues.

    • I have this same setup as well, Bosch heat pump stacked on top of a front loader with a rubber mat in between and it works fine. The dryer is also slightly wider than the washer, but when it's stacked the difference doesn't matter, it's not like the appliances are moving and the space either side is unusable anyway.

To be honest, you can mount it if you understand the implications.

Heat pump dryers are usually around 50kg, if you can install a shelf for it that spans two studs on either side, and put in two legs at the front to support it on the ground, then you would definitely be able to put the dryer on it. Think of it as like a small table for the dryer.

On the point about the depth difference, not sure what you mean - it's only a 6.5cm difference - the feet of the dryer are inset by more than this much, so they would still be okay to put on top of your washing machine.

Worst comes to worse, just get one of these things: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BX9BRK7V/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4

    • Thanks for the suggestion - certainly good point to consider the feet placement of the dryer it self - do you know where I can find this info and if it would be stackable on my exact unit?

The shelf idea is also really good but at approximately Half the cost do the dryer itself - bit of a difficult pill to swallow.

It will be fine, no dryer will have feet that extend all the way to the edge of the dryer.

Well, it's the same issue no matter what dryer you get.

Another option is just to build the shelf yourself - get a couple of pieces of structural pine, you'll need 4 legs, then another 4 pieces to build the top frame around the legs, then just get a piece of particleboard or MDF and screw it into the top for the shelf.

Structural pine is like around $5 per linear metre, each leg will be around 1m (needs to clear the washing machine), then the frame can be around 0.5m x 4 - so you'll need around 6m all up (i.e. $30). Piece of MDF is like $20, so easily done for $50.

  • I've got a Hisense dryer and it's stacked ontop of my front loader washing machine for a few years now. Saved alot of space and still works great without issue

  • Is it possible to swap them around?
    Dryer at the bottom.
    Washer on top?

That's a good suggestion but have only ever seen it other way around. I think it's maybe because the washing machine would probably be more prone to wobbling during operation?

      • Perhaps. 🤷‍♂️
