City of Cockburn $50 Rebate on Compost Bins, or Subsidised $85 Worm Farm Inc 1kg Worms Plus More

160

Only for City of Cockburn residents but a pretty good deal if you live there.

You have a choice of 1 of 3 options:

  1. Worm Farm:
For a subsidised rate of $85 you will recive a 4-tiered unit, 20kg of castings, 1kg of worms, instruction manual and free delivery (if you do not take it on the workshop evening). Residents are required to come along to a workshop, bring your $85 in cash, and learn how to set-up and use your unit to its maximum efficiency. This component of the subsidy is in partnership with The Worm Shed.

2: Compost Bin:
Choose your own compost bin that suits your needs and receive a $50 rebate on proof of your receipt and residence in the City of Cockburn. You will be required to come into the City's Administration Building and complete a Rebate form and your rebate will be completed electronically within 6-8 weeks.

3: Bokashi Compost Bin:
For a subsidised rate of $50 you will receive a Bokashi Bin and Bokashi Dust.
On-going support and advice is available on request. We want your system to work for you and your family with no units or bins hiding behind the shed collecting dust and spider webs!

To me the worm farm option is the best one as for the same set up I spent over $150 at Bunnings without the 20kg of castings (for those that don't know worm casting are one of the best composts to put on your garden). One tip from me though is to get a worm blanket, your system will work so much better.

If you can make it in to the admin building without being mugged you deserve more than a $50 rebate

  • This better not be another cock and bull deal

are you the mayor of cockburn? lighten up, sheesh!

    • +3

go with the normal compost bin. get one that spins otherwise you won't turn it like you're meant to. the others are too much to bother with.

plus the compost will be warm like cockburn

Like I said the worm farm option is the best and most valuable. If you have kids they will love feeding them plus the worm "wee" which you get from the tap at the bottom is great for your garden. Plus once the worms move up a level you are left with the worm castings which is black gold for your garden.

The Bokashi bins are fairly cheap anyway and they end up costing you more over time anyway as you have to continually buy the Bokashi dust.

Compost bins are only as good as the amount of time and effort you put into it, you can get a cheap one but you'd need to keep turning it and adding new levels. A good one will reduce the amount of work you have to do but they are expensive (I got an earthmaker second hand for $30 which is awesome but new will cost you close to $300).

Personally the only one i don't have is the Bokashi bin and I think i'll get one soon anyway.

      • nice one, thanks Paulb5 and gotbean

      Don't be such a cock.

  • What is the difference between compost bin and Bokashi compost bin?

  • With the normal compost bin, to get the $50 rebate, you can buy any compost bin from eg. Bunnings then fill out the form? Do we need to go to admin office as form available via link?

    • Pretty sure you have to go to the admin building. Not sure why but maybe to prove you are a resident???

How the hell does a city get named "Cockburn"? Maybe I don't want to find out…

    • +2

Cockburn is named after Cockburn Sound, which was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling after Admiral Sir George Cockburn.

Old English surnames originated around peoples professions i.e cooper (barrel maker), Armstrong (blacksmith) Smith (Smithing) etc

So you can imagine what profession someone with the name Cockburn had back in 1827

      • A gun smith perhaps?

      • Paulb5, I can't think of a plausible profession.

        Professional nudist bather?

      • The guy that puts the hole in the donut?

we also have an "inn a loo" here in perth

The suburb "Upper Swan" also gives me a bit of a giggle.

If you really wanna know its co burn

    • +1

…meanwhile, for the rest of the English speaking world it's not the norm to have a random silent "ck". So it's still Cock-burn to us!

If I had an unfortunate name like that I'd also change the alphabetic phonetic rules lol

    • +13

must be tough to have dirty talk for those people from 'co burn' if the ck is silent..
      fu me
      su me co
      etc etc

      • dude, you rock. can't stop laughing.

        • +1

thanks guys for giving me a good laugh…

  • I think the only reason Cockburn exists is because of worms.

  • +1

Thanks for the Friday arvo laughs but on a serious note I do love my worm farm.

  • pronounced coburn i found it hilarious when i lived over there, but all the locals were quick to remind me of how to say it

This is a good deal and other councils also have deals on compost worms.

1kg of worms is about 4000 worms, which would normally sell for about $120.

Bought a worm farm about 4.5 months ago, and they multiply fast, started with 1000 worms, but the population is now about 4000.

    • Have you managed to get them to move up a level yet? Just trying to do that myself now and not sure how I'm doing.

      • +1

Yes, no problem with them moving between trays, you could try something they really like, or something strong, some ideas are: banana peels, avocardo and avocardo skin, also cajuan or some spice. They are also going nuts over a rice pasta.

The problem im having is some worms are going for a walk in the low tray where the worm tea is. Trying to sort this out, sponges work well, but looking for a better solution.

        • Let me know how you go as i am constantly finding some "swimmers"

        • Im trying to find a synthetic filter or mesh so the tea passes but worms cant get through and cant eat the material. The sponges do a good job as worms dont eat the sponges and it also absorbs the worm tea and stops them drowning.

Was also going to say above.
They probably wont all go to the upper tray, best to not put any food in the lower tray so they have to move to the top for food.
