Not defending the 'bargain' but they are (likely to be) very good headphones.
I got the MX4's a e years about now for like $200. If these were sub $500 I'd say that's probably a bargain at the moment. They'll be very good.

My XM4s make the most deafening high pitched squeal when ANC is on. Ruined an otherwise brilliant pair of headphones.

Mine did that, got the anc microphones replaced under warranty, if yours are well out of warranty you can look at replacing them yourself.
One thing to note with these headphones is they're not waterproof rated and shouldn't be used in the rain, as water can get into these microphones and damage them.
I was trying on some quiet comforts at jb and could hear the same thing. I think the xm5s had an audible pitch as well. Of course those were neglected af so hard to say if it's half expected, or damage from an impact or loose part

So they have the same touch controls, app and adaptive sound modes etc? It's like everyone with a pair is saying old corollas are the same as a brand new one, haha. Good not upgrading until you have to though.
I still use my MDR-1000X the original model before Sony rebranding the range to XM2. 10 years old as of today, still doing great.
But they are not sub-$500 :(
I wonder if the have fixed the hinge issues of the XM4, XM5 and ULT.
Because you can get $50 off the price of them and get them the day they come out - You're not usually getting a discount on brand new products.

I dont think Bargain refers to one product being better than the other. But about that said product being sold cheaper than the normal going rate and usually for a bargain it should be considerable discount / special price, not usually sold at this price.
It 7% off RRP of $699, which far exceeds some of the deals posted by some of the downvoters. So in my book, (and theirs if they choose to look at their own post history) it’s deserving of a post.

Personally I dont think this particular product which is way over priced and then discounted at 7% is a deal but if its a product that is already considered excellent value for the price / bang for buck product and then has a 7% discount on top, i would consider that more worthy. Especially if the product has been around a while and never that low.
I think the issue people have with this, is that the RRP is absolutely ridiculous for the product considering where the previous products are at. Now if they had brought out a totally different range which boasted much higher quality audio and ANC to justify the price increase then people probably wouldnt respond the same as they have this time around.
@lonewolf: My motivation is that it’s a good enough deal on a not so bad price, and OP hasn’t got a huge post history, and that some downvotes might be a bit unfair when considering all the facts.
The “deal” itself seems OK, and I know that not one of the downvoters have tried this product to know whether it’s worth the money or not.
I pointed out earlier the RRP isn’t that rediculous. The XM3, at launch price adjusted for inflation is >$610
The XM4 RRP when adjusted for inflation is >$655
The pricing isn’t that ridiculous when their main competition, the Bose QC Ultra, is in the same ballpark.
The downvotes imho are misdirected. If there was a post for “inflation” that’s where they belong. Considering the previous launch prices, this isn’t far off, and a discount on preorder is a bonus.
The previous models are where they’re at because XM5 is ~3 years old, XM4 is ~5 years. Ofc they’re going to be discounted regularly after being in the market for that long.
People need to adjust their expectations every quarter in line with CPI, or they will get left behind and yell at the clouds about how a car cost $3000 back in their day. This is exactly what’s happening here, but instead of the car, it’s cans. They’re stuck in yesteryears pricing for these things.
Just about all the downvoters need to read the OzB voting guidelines again, they are not being followed. They specifically say that no vote is appropriate for not liking the RRP, not a down vote.

Many people that are firmly in the Apple ecosystem prefer these over the Airpod Max so it's pretty justified. You could always get an XM3 / XM4 / XM5 if your budget is lower.

Loved my XM4's, replaced them with XM5's when they died and i absolutely hate my XM5s it wasn't an upgrade it was a significant downgrade.
The issue is the noise canceling has this stupid auto adaptive ANC feature you cannot turn off and it doesn't fully kick in unless it deems the environment is loud enough. For my environment it makes the ANC on the XM5's next to useless (even my Galaxy Buds 2 blow it out of the water) because it decides the environment isn't loud enough so it doesn't bother kick in properly. The result; I can hear things like my AC wine through the ANC on the XM5's when my XM4's were dead silent. Hate them and !@#$ sony for not giving us the option to customize it.
Download the app and disable it, I don't have issues with it. But I agree the active ANC is infuriating.

Bloody hell the price is going higher than I expected. Got the XM3 and XM5. I expect the 7s to cost $850 at this rate. Hopefully the 6 gets rid of the stupid flaws the 5s had.

What were the flaws of the 5s? Broke my 3s so was thinking about doing the upgrade program.
The only one that personally annoys me is the noise cancellation system is different and adaptive to the environment. Sounds good, but if I can click my fingers and hear it, which I couldnt with the 3s, then its not good. After checking from reviews sounds like they kept the system but we'll see if they improved it. Sound supposedly more improved. But I've seen mention the comfort is lower now. Something to do with the microphone in the ear pressing up against you.
At least you can blame the most powerful man in the world for these prices.

This was happening long before him. And I doubt he has any say in what sony charge for their items in any given country. There are other people with may more power than he has.

Luckily only paid $350 for the XM5 and I'm sure the improvements/differences would only be about 15% again.

Yeah was amazing the JB price error. I originally paid $405 from Goodguys which was still a good price but lucky for 28 degrees price protection.
I prefer the XM5 for comfort, slightly more natural sound and better microphones for phone calls (you'll get a lot of people on these threads saying that the XM4 and xm3 are better. Good for them, it means there is absolutely no need for upgrades.

Articles said that was the max improvement over the previous model but yeah not that much in it really. Nothing wrong with XM4 or XM5, main thing is getting a good deal.

Introducing even more complexity into the hinge is a recipe for disaster, just google "sony xm broken hinge" before buying sony.
True and i had that issue.
So i switched to sennheiser momentum 4 - but these have an issue where ANC goes on and causes crackling making them unusable. I can't win.
As a workaround the recent latest app and firmware allows for turning ANC off completely.
Prefer the sound of momentum so if they release a v5 at the right price then I'll check it out.

It's not wired audio via USB-C, and they have quick charge anyway.
The first round of reviews is clearly influencer and shallow 'tech journalism' first, with only one notable outlet taking a frequency response measurement.
I'll take their word on the ANC, and the mic clearly does a good job with noise cancelling, but there's nothing of note about the mic resolution, and you'd want to wait and see on astute and clear judgement with respect to audio resolution anyway.
I realise it’s not USB audio, if it were, my preorder would be in already aha, nonetheless I’m spending the day pondering if it is worth the outlay for the “listen while charge” feature.
Agreed 100% that they are not really “reviews”, they’re idiots reading the product brochure and rating it out of 10, this is an unfortunate common trend online. Shills or not, they certainly act like it. Re assuringly, the outlet that has measured them had nice things to say.
