My 2c on my previous experience with frame models.

Frames are popular and marketed really well. They are affordable for a reason, the PQ is mid or even below average at best and the blacks are very grey and the colour shifting is awful unless viewing perfectly centred. I would only personally recommend this if your sole reason is aesthetics.

    • +4

yeah i got 55 inch one and for my living room its perfect due to it looking like a picture
in my "cinema room" i would have the OLED but if you want aesthetics, nothing beats it, you can also get a kit so that the box is installed into a wall and there are 0 cords, no other tv looks better. (not to be mistaken with picture quality)

I have an old model from 2017/2018 (LS003) without antireflective technology and it has been great TV TBH

    • Does seem cool if you're rich enough to pay $$$ just to have it hanging on a wall in a room you barely watch TV haha.

Does the display have any qualities that make it work better as a 'painting' than a regular TV? e.g. matte finish. Or is it just the fact that it's so flat?

      • +2

it has matte screen and squared off frame. Colours are duller and blacks are not deep which I guess helps with making it look like a photo in a frame.

        • Thanks, always wondered about that. I guess if you don't give too shits about picture quality but care how it looks in your room it makes sense too.

          • @bleeder: i think picture quality is harshly criticised, its only if your comparing it against OLED that is lacks
I actually prefer watching sports on it over my OLED

            • @botchie: Any issues with sport? The ball always blurred when it was kicked fast on my Q60 QLED.

            • @botchie: You touched on something I've been thinking about recently. I've been out for an OLED or miniLED for a while, someone recently mentioned to me that there's no point in those if you're only watching sports. I only watch sports pretty much.

You're saying sports are actually better on the older LEDs? What's your reasoning for this?

For me my main gripe watching sports is when you get low quality streams and get a bit of pixelation. I've noticed it looking at OLEDs in store, a trail of pixels will follow the players around, I think it's a compression thing? I've seen stuff about turning on or off motion blurring to deal with this stuff.

I've been reading Sony has the best image processing, which would be better for watching lower quality streams. There's been some Sony X90L deals going around, I'm really wondering if that's a better option for watching sports.

X90L are going for around $1300 - $1400 for a 65". The alternative would be waiting it out for a deal on a 65" TCL C8K later on in the year or spend the extra on an LG C5 when the deals come later in the year.

People say there's Sony fanboys around and a lot of people just reject TCL because it's a cheap brand. I kind of don't want to spend my hard earned cash on a 2 year old TV that has older tech…

Back in the day I got burned by burned by Nokia fanboys when iPhone came out, they were insisting Nokia was better and I fell for it and got a Nokia instead of an iPhone. I can't help but think buying a Sony with older tech is that same thing all over again…

@bleeder: OLED have very fast pixel response time which can be quite unforgiving on low quality feeds (they show all the flaws). On the other hand, if you have a high quality, high frame rate feed you will not see any blurring. A good upscaler will help a bit but garbage in will mostly mean garbage out.

LCDs vary a lot depending on the panel in question. At the low end, they can turn blurry and smudgy when there is fast motion as the response times of the pixels is not fast enough.

In reality every panel that isn’t an OLED is an LCD underneath though as a rule of thumb the more you spend the better the panel will be. Best you can do is see it in person showing the kind of content you want to watch.

              • @bleeder: im no pro so my opinion might not be best to follow but I find OLED bit too dark for sports, not sure why but brashness of frame tv looks better to me, could be just personal preference - I am also not comparing top OLED model here like G series but C.

            • @botchie: there are better non oled panels in this price point like the TCL 65" C855

              • @ozchobie: yeah but the FRAME?
can it look as good when its not on

                • @botchie: Now go back to my main post above lol. I didnt say it's ugly?

"@bleeder: i think picture quality is harshly criticised, its only if your comparing it against OLED that is lacks"

Your talking about PQ just now and then arguing now with just aesthetics.

              • @ozchobie: Problem is we are in no mans land for TCL 8 series at the moment, C855 are now sold out everywhere and probably no deals for C8K for a while, if we're lucky we'll get a decent EOFY deal. Most places not even stocking C8K yet so I'm not counting on an EOFY deal.

      • Its not a terrible TV - its a good compromise between an decor item and a TV.

    • I agree! We only got ours because we wanted it to look like a picture on the wall when not using it. As a TV itself its good but not great, can do a lot better for the same money.

  • $1785 with pricebeat. Do you still get the gift card though?

  • +2

This was $1400-odd in the recent TV sales from JB-Hi Fi (and matched by Harvey Norman and GoodGuys etc) a few weeks back.

So this sale price is pretty average - it's a clearance model so it should continue to be discounted.

    • yep! we paid around that for ours - cant recall where from

  • +1

Bought this for $1500 a few weeks back and as mentioned above it is a clearance line so I would wait as it would likely be discounted over the next few weeks/months.

    • how you like it?
Im not sure if the pro would be better or just get this one

  • get wood grain oak bezel and these frame from kmart to match the decor, its almost same height as the 65 frame
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/a1-poster-frame-oak-look-42…

    🤓

  • TCL and Hisense also make “the frame” now too… no seperate box though and they come with free oak bezel i think. And their arts are free, no subscription like samsung, no issue just download your own to the samsung

    • +2

no separate box is actually a - , all in one box makes it nice and neat to hide everything , the new pro has a wireless one but thats not good for gaming

      • yeah , i thought saying no separate box “though” imply that its a negative… i sure didnt know about the Frame pro! wireless box is fantastic (if i knew i would of waited . just got 2024 versions recently), dont think people who get the frame priority is gaming though right?

        • depends mate, if you have kids etc and want to have xbox on it….I like the flexibility so I wouldn't get the wireless but if you are def NOT gaming I can see its appeal , if they drop the price

        • +1

It's not actually wireless though lol. There's still a power cable you need to plug in for the panel itself.
