Reasonable Warranty Time for a Washing Machine

Good morning, I have purchased in 2022 a brand new Haier washer and dryer. The dryer dies within a year and got replaced by Haier. The washing machine yesterday just started letting all the water out on through the bottom of it and can't be used anymore.

I get it that the warranty says two years but is that reasonable? Nobody really buys appliances thinking they'd last that short

Is there anything I can do about this, or do I have to accept it's out of warranty and buy new?

I lose my faith with Consumer Law and always just cop it. But worth a try on your end if you can survive without replacement while waiting for a "reply" from them.

"The washing machine yesterday just started letting all the water out on through the bottom of it and can't be used anymore."

      Check for user error first

The cheap plastic drain hose could be lose or have developed a hole in it due to rubbing against the floor or wall (as they can do).
Also check that water isnt running down the back of the machine from the water inlet connections

      • You are quoting the OP but, again, replying to the top thread for whatever stupid reason. Classic Dr Dill.

No that's not reasonable. Tell them to fix it or you'll be taking it to Xcat.

    • VCAT?

      • +4

Yes, the X is in place of whatever state you happen to live in.

        • Oh, I see. Didn't even know other states have "cat"s

      Excuse me!

OP bought a cheap and cheerful China made Haier machine for minimum bucks with a very generous 2 years of warranty.

      What did OP expect?

And lets not forget what abuse some people give thier washing machines (though most wouldnt know).

Given OP's dryer lasted less than 12 months, I can just imagine the amount of abuse and misuse these machines must put up with OP.

You really need to update your spell checker FFS.

      • Oi scroll down, you might actually see that OP told us 28 hours before your comment that the manufacturer is paying for it.

Emotional, sexual, physical or financial abuse? What exactly are you imagining here? Or are you talking about not separating lights and darks?

  • I bought a dryer once and got the extra warranty. It had an issue after 4.5 years (5 year total warranty), they took it away for repair and then ended up giving me a credit for a brand new due a parts issue and time. We spent a bit extra to get a bigger model and then got the extra warranty again to cover myself for the future. The extra warranty paid for itself very easily!

Washing Machines and Dryers are high-wear item due to the moving parts and heat, so 2 years is fine for most brands. Only more expensive brands would you expect it to be longer. Haier isn't exactly expensive when they are between $500 and $1,000 for most models.

I've got a washing machine that is only 4 years old, and the wiring loom has become worn on a few wires for the barrel motor due the spin. I was able to fix it, but most would've got it either warranty fixed through extra warranty or gone to get a new one.

  • You can't do much if it's out of warranty. However, it might be worth a try to contact them. Did you buy it using your credit card? Many credit cards offer extended warranty

Look up ACCC website "consumer rights and guarantees". 3 years is not much at all. All washer should last several years, more depending on the RRP but something like at least 58y for a cheap model.

    • +1

      58y

      58 years? That's optimistic.
Do you have a washing machine from 1967 still going strong?

They don't build them like they used to

          Exactly
When they were made in Australia (or Japan for Samsung and LG) they lasted for many years

          • @Dr Phil: Scroll down just a bit more, OPs update is a few more down the list.

  • Is it leaking from where you check the filter? Try going ACL route.

I would say it's unreasonable. Would expect washer and dryer to last around 5 years minimum.

Honestly, I’d be pretty disappointed if a washing machine didn’t last ten years.

A good question to ask yourself is: would you have bought it if you knew it was only going to last two years?

    • Honestly, I’d be pretty disappointed if a washing machine didn’t last ten years.

      FTFY
Honestly, I’d be pretty disappointed flabbergasted if a Haier washing machine didn’t lasted ten >6 years.

      • My basic model Haier washing machine is almost 8 years old and it gets an absolute flogging with multiple washes every day of all kinds of contents and still going strong. * fingers crossed*

The kids do nothing fancy. Just load the thing up until they can't fit anything else in, add however much detergent they can be bothered adding, turn it on and let it rip. Towels, blankets, clothes - the works, they don't discriminate between delicates or heavy duty. I'm not even sure if some of the boys separate their whites from their colours!

Just replaced a basic F&P dryer today though that had constant daily use for at least 10 years, probably longer.

I'd be pretty miffed if I bought something that only lasted two or three years.

When I entered the thread, I was going to suggest six years as a ballpark.

Lucky you. Perhaps you should get all Haier when you fill the order for your big white goods buy up.
Me? When I go looking for white goods Haier isn't even on the list, so I'll never know.

My parents' washing machine is older than me. They're in for a shock when they eventually have to buy one manufactured this century.

  • The 'industry standard' is two years. Personally I'd expect large appliances to last longer than that and I'd like to see longer warranties. Keep in mind that washing machines are a pretty complex machine with a lot of seals and valves and soft/flexible materials.

You could try going down the ACL route. Or pay for a repair.

LG does a four year promotion from time to time if you decide to upgrade.

  • +1

Yeah i'd be challenging them under Australian consumer law.
Have had 2 Apple laptops die on me within the 2-3 year period (2 year warranty advertised).
I argued the ACL point and got it covered for free - but they were resistant.

Ok. Just an update for everyone

After posting this here I called them and was instantly refunded repair under warranty.

Said that Id have to escalate it and was offered a talk to the customer satisfaction team. They approved parts and labour but insisted on $219 service fee.

I refused that and ask to talk to one of the supervisor's. After 45 minutes on hold they finally accepted to cover all the costs under warranty.

    • +2

      That is the way.

    • +4

      Well done for persisting.
How much time did they cost you all up?
Send them a bill based on your hourly rate.

      • +3

From waiting on hold to having it all done took 45 minutes

    • excellent work!

    • And you never hear back from them again

    • Absolutely awesome outcome. Well done!

    turn it upside down!
possibly cheap hose got split. A hoseclamp could fix it.

Haier washing machine failure. Then poor support. Well I never!

Nobody really buys appliances thinking they'd last that short

When it comes to brands like Haier, that's what most ppl would expect.

  • My washing machine is 10 years old but the agitators wear out.

First one agitator done under warranty last 2 times i spotted same model on side of road i got perfectly good ones out of them.

I have since got another 2 spare secondhand agitators sitting in the shed.

I just wanted to point out that in Australia, the manufacturer warranty doesn't mean anything unless it is longer than your Consumer Guarantees provided by the ACL.

I haven't come across any example of where an Australian Consumer Guarantee wasn't longer than a manufacturer's warranty.

Generally speaking, if there is an extended warranty available for purchase, this implies the appliance is intended to last for at least that total time, so you don't need to purchase that extended warranty because Consumer Guarantee will apply for free.
