Premium Scotch or Tequila - Looking for Gift Recommendations!

Hi all, looking to buy a thankyou gift for my boss as he's been incredibly supportive to me. He's a 50ish yo european, fun, easy going family man, and I think he'd appreciate a high-end bottle of scotch or tequila.

My budget is around $300 to $500. I’m not too familiar with that end of town, so I'd love any unique or memorable recommendations (or even alternatives if you think there's something better in that price bracket).

Thanks in advance!

Do you know what he drinks? Usually the best move is to buy whatever he normally drinks in a higher end bottle. For example, I really like Glengoyne whisky, so buy me the 21 year old and you're my favourite person because I'll never buy it for myself. Buy me a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue then I'll recognise you spent a lot of money, that's it.

For Tequila, Don Fulano is where I'd look in that price range, if he likes sipping on tequila. If he likes margaritas then it's probably not a good option because it'll just be drowned out.

Personally, I wouldn't spend that much because it's a bit over the top. Wait until he retires for something overpriced. A thank you gift at that price is a bit overkill when you need to keep working with each other, unless you're both really well paid. But that's up to you.

    • This is good advice.
Personally I'm not paying that much for anything Blended (inc most Japanese blends)

    • Good call, I'll remember that. I don't know but I'll try and find out. And yes the cost isn't an issue. The Glengoyne 21 is on the shortlist thanks. Have you tried it?

I'm leaning more towards a good scotch now rather than tequila. Ive had loads of excellent tequilas overseas for around 100 that I couldn't justify it at 300. Thanks again.

Get a good bottle of whisky at that price range. Skip the tequila.
Also skip dans and try some independent whisky places like

    • Makes sense, I'm leaning that way, thanks.

Goodness me! Buy them for yourself. Do not be a boss pet.
There is and will always be a conflict interest/class conflict between boss and staff.

    • Nah it's not like that at all. I just try to do good things for good people whenever I can. Not looking for anything in return.

  • Do you work for the APS?

If so, dont give a gift that makes your boss have to fill out paperwork and trigger questions.

    • Hahaha! Love it!

He'll be happier if there's a 'worm in his bottle'.

Is he a fan of motor racing at all? If so, how about a bottle of Waters Whisky, founded by Cam Waters - https://waterswhisky.com/pages/about-us

well its just over priced rebranded white label whisky.

    Go Cognac
    .

  • If you want to go down the tequila pathway, go Fortaleza.

But first, you need to identify how your gift recipient users their spirits. If they mix with soft drinks, don't spend much, there's no point. Only but good spirits of they will be consumed neat or on the rocks.
