Cracking deal. If this had a bit more wattage and the tray didn't fall out when you tip it upside down this would be close to a perfect basic air fryer. The user interface with the dial is great.

    • The tray shouldn't slide out when held tray-down, although I've never tried that when it's full of food.

      • +4

I think they mean when you go to empty out the food you’ve just cooked, you tip the basket over and the grill insert tends to fall out along with the food, which is a bit annoying since it’s hot.

        Still a good buy though

        • Ah yeah, that's definitely a thing!

    • The tray doesn’t fall out if you have the rubber grommets at four points on the tray. But I will concede that is not a great design choice as they do wear out. I can’t fault mine otherwise.

Arguably the industry air fryer leader, Philips, in their system the inner tray in the basket will fall out just as a normal occurrence. And their user interface is pathetic.

      • Mine will always fall out and still has all the rubber grommets, it did that since it was new. I guess it could be some manufacturing variability if it doesn’t happen to everyone

      • +1

Yeah nah, mine has fallen out since day one. Seems like there's some manufacturing variability. My Philips the basket clicks into the base and has to be released with a button. The basket design in the Philips reduces the volume and especially the area available to spread everything out which is the thing I like most about the vortex, so I use it more often. And yeah, the UI of the Philips is a pain compared to the Vortex, if feels like they went with their first idea

        • Oh and the stupid tray isn't symmetrical, but it is very close and it will fit in the wrong way but scratch the non-stick coating off the basket, which is just an added insult when you've forgotten it's going to fall out and you've spilled hot roast potatoes everywhere.

          • @danwylie: Tray has arrows on it for direction

        • The basket design in the Philips reduces the volume and especially the area available to spread everything out

allows for circulation of hot air tho

          • +1

@0jay: Yes but it makes it a bitch to clean so many people use the optional Phillips supplied metal basket or the paper ones.
This defeats the whole purpose of the elaborate venting system

            • @Grok: I find they wash up easily enough in the dishwasher.

I always dump in a bit of absorbent paper after the cookup before I intend to wash to soak up excess oil and fat before a wash.

              • @0jay: Yes but on the Phillips you have to clean the basket including inner tray. Then clean the outer basket and venting tray.

I have access to both airfryers and the Phillips (the top model) is rubbish in almost every way.

It may cook a little better if you place food directly in the tray due to the venting system but that is marginal.

                • @Grok: I can't speak to the Philips unit, only the outer bucket/inner basket design which's really good in my experience, even generic ones (though I prefer the larger oven-door style units)

      • And the Phillips mid range models seem to be made out of the the cheapest plastic available. I really dislike mine, the plastic cover on the basket broke after a month, and it is woefully underpowered.

    • +1

it's under powered 1700w instead of 2200watts. I notice it when preheating in winter, takes a lot longer, and also when filling up the air fryer it often won't cook in the expected time (such as instructions on frozen food) and won't be as crisp, But not filling it up and it works as expected. Ofcourse you should always have space between each item, but that's not the problem, it doesn't have the wattage to hold the preheat temperature after adding a lot of food, especially frozen food.

Still a good compromise, the 2200watt Philips models cost a lot more.

Have this and it’s great - zero issues

  • Fantastic air fryer. At this price point its a no brainer

  • i got this cheaper on amazon, it is fantastic. i had a smaller aldi one that crapped itself, so i got this vortex.
it has been over a year now and have used it 3-5 time a week, every week.

  • is it big enough for a family of 4?

    • -2

How could anyone answer this for you? It depends what your family eats, how much they eat etc. It has the capacity in the product name so you can judge based on that.

    • Can just fit a small half leg of lamb in it. So probably not enough for family of 4. Good size for a couple or maybe 3 . Can do a chicken that's been cut to make it flat.
Love ours, easiest air fryer to use. Take it on holidays with us to cook a roast lamb or pretty much anything else.

    • 1-2kg of frozen chips no worries

do I need another air fryer? still haven't opened my $80 Philips XL air fryer.

    • Yes

    • I've add this one for 3 years - you kinda answered if I should get another.

    • Yes back up for your back up's back up

    • Used the Philips in an Airbnb last month. My husband tried to use it a couple of times and thought it was on but it was still off so would find cold raw food sitting in itv20 minutes later.
The instapot one much more intuitive to use and has large numbers that display the temperature and time to go while it is cooking so you know it is working.

We have a glass airfryer instead because airfrying (oxidation) + high heat + nonstick/plastic really make for a triple whammy combo

    • +2

That’s why I haven’t bought one to date. Was looking for a stainless steel one but don’t think it exists. Who makes a glass one?

      • +2

Amazon has one. Much easier and guilt-free to clean glass too.

        • +4

for those looking at this, $10 cheaper at Spotlight

        • Do you have this one? If so, can you tell me how big the glass bowl bottom from the inside is? Couldn't find the dimensions on the listing. Thanks!

      • +1

Ninja overseas has glass one , assume we will get it too in about 6 months.

    • This is the reason I am looking at replacing my one.

      • Amazon has one. Much easier and guilt-free to clean glass too.

        • does the glass one do crackling pork good?

          • @easoweno: The oven door style ones have stainless mesh trays and actually have insulated body so you don't lose a ton of heat (and energy) through a single layer glass vessel

    • Which glass one do you use?

    • The very very first airfryers sold on late night TV were glass. They were terrible.

I had a gangbuster bargain on one here back in the day.

I tossed mine after a few months

      • The one I have is great so they've probably improved a lot. There is fundamentally little mechanical difference between using glass and plastic, aside from the chemical benefits from using glass rather than plastic.

Can i do a pork belly (aldi square one) or a chicken in this.

Will it do a full bag (750g) of potato wedges/chips and actually cook them properly?

All I want is an air fryer that will do those 3 things well.

The 10L either rotisserie basket is only $129. Does it compare in terms of cooking crispy wedgesbor is it more like an oven.

  • Doesn't look like you can buy from Amazon at $99 unless I'm missing something

    • Still available. Possibly don't ship to your area? Change post code to 2000 or similar to check.

      • I think because I've already bought one. It works if I go incognito.

        • +1

Incognito also changes your postcode, so you would need to change the postcode to yours incognito to be sure. As I can purchase more than 1.

  • very good airfryer. have used ours daily for about 2 years and it hasnt skipped a beat

  • Dont need a new air fryer, but I want this one so bad now that it's on sale!! 😖🤣

  • Best air fryer I’ve ever had - I replaced the inner tray with a non branded one from Ali express as my original somehow got “accidently” bent out of shape 😕 all works well.

    • +1

Instapot now have the inners in-stock for $20 and the drawer for $30. A spare is always great as every family has someone that leaves it dirty.

  • How does it compare to this RH option: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/905718 ?

  • Strange, I applied the code and can see the net amount is $93.99 but my credit card is charged $103.99

  • +1

Don't forget 18% CB on Shopback. Ends tonight

    • Will that disable the coupon? Because if it doesn't track then better off not using the coupon.

      • Had similar thoughts. Any idea how to check if it is an Eligible code?

      • Received a notification this afternoon that included "Save10" under inclusions

        • Thank you, never used an airfryer and might not end up using it, but at this price it's worth a try

  • Plasticky smell that I couldn't get rid of by cleaning or running hot empty for hours.

Got rid of the smell by cooking with food a few times. I'm not sure if it's actually gone or just covered up?

But whatever the case is, it's gone now and I love it and use it every day. Will report back in 60 years if I develop some illness.
