Looking for a New No Annual Fee Credit Card with Good Sign-up Bonus/Cashback

Hi all,

I've had the ANZ Rewards Black credit card for a few years now, mainly for the points and perks. But since they've stopped waiving the annual fee, I'm planning to close it and move on.

I'm now on the lookout for a new credit card with no annual fee (at least for the first year) and ideally one that comes with a solid sign-up bonus—whether that's cashback, rewards points, or other perks. I Usually spend $4k-5k on average per month

I’ve checked out PointHacks, but to be honest, it’s a bit overwhelming with all the options and fine print. So I thought I’d ask here:

Has anyone recently signed up for a credit card that ticks these boxes?

  • No annual fee for the first year (or ongoing if possible)

  • Decent cashback or points sign-up offer

  • Perks like travel insurance, lounge access, or good rewards earn rate a bonus

Would really appreciate any recent recommendations or insights. Thanks in advance!

Depends on your regular spending. But the CommBank Smart Awards card has a signup bonus and can effectively be free:

$19 per month fee, waived if you spend over $2,000 per statement period
Bonus 80k awards points, 20k per month for the first 4 months for spending $1,500 per statement period
The card accrues 1.5 award points per $1 spend

    • is 20K points =$100 GC?
Do you have any experience with Commbank, e.g. fast approval, ect..

My experience was very good, approved pretty quickly and was able to add to Apple Wallet before the card arrived.

21k points per $100 gift card. By the time you meet the spending criteria, you'll have enough points for 4+ cards. So if you have regular spending over $2k per statement, then you'd get $400+ in gift cards for no annual fee.

I redeemed 5 gift cards over the 6 month period of having the card.

        • the card looks good. However, Commbank's redemption is pretty limited… No Amazon. no Ebay, no even Bunnings LOL Might try Westfield gift card. Rumors are that they can be accepted anywhere..

          • @VQLD: Depends on what you're looking to use them on. I redeem cards for groceries, so either Aldi or WISH/Woolworths cards. Guaranteed to need to use them every week and brings down my spending in that category. It'd offset spending in another category if that's needed :)

            • @sghetti: yeah… to me it's just sort of to treat yourself for the above 3 shops by using points.. Just psychological thing :)
Yes, in reality it doesnt matter

  • No annual fee for the first year (or ongoing if possible)
Decent cashback or points sign-up offer

Don't think these two criteria go hand-in-hand but happy to be proven wrong as I'm keen to apply for one too if there is such offer

    • I agree, best you’ll get is reduced fee for the 1st year.

  • Recently approved for HSBC Platinum Qantas. 1.5 QFF points per dollar spend in the first year and no annual fee. No signup bonus however. Only card I have come across which has no monthly cap, but instead an annual cap which is very generous at $120,000 before reduced earn rate. So it is good for those one-off big purchases/bills.

Ongoing annual fee is $399 but they're known to waive it.

    • they're known to waive it.

How so? You ring up and ask to waive just before the anniversary of the 1st year? I thought that thing is over with all major banks since they started tighten their budgets.

  • For your information, if you see a credit card with a rewards system and no annual fee, its very likely going to have international transaction fees which include buying in AUD on an Australian site but the payment is processed overseas.

For everything else you will be relying on having the first year free, or the benefits for the credit card being so big that the fee is worth it.
