For those looking to buy for gpu mining, just a note this board won't power more than 5x 5090s for some reason.

    • ASRock answered me why Ryzen 9000 CPUs are dying on their Motherboards.

ASRock clearly gave this guy the run-around, he's just reporting on what they told him, no problem there.

If their claim is true that they implemented to the AMD specifications, then how can that not be 100% an AMD issue? Also how come it's almost exclusively ASRock boards that are killing the 9000 CPUs? (and no, I don't buy that MSI/ASUS/GB etc. decided to implement their boards "lower than the AMD specifications").

I would suspect it's more of a voltage spiking problem (similar to what TYC mentioned in a previous video), we'll need to wait for a proper analysis/deep dive from something like GN to see what has really been going on.

        • Yep, if GN even bothers to do it :) …

    • One cannot simply power the Nvidia Gauntlet (5 x 5090s), even if they did, that kind of power would turn mere mortals to ash.

a bit unrelated but I had a b550m steel legend that i had major issues with regarding xmp. supposedly was an issue on the b450 as well based on some youtube videos.

no idea if it affects the AM5 stuff though :P but because of that I don't plan on buying any asrock products again.

    • that i had major issues with regarding xmp

XMP is an Intel standard. No AMD device will guarantee compatibility. That's why EXPO was invented. Or you could manually adjust timings and voltage.

      • +3

        same thing

        xmp/expo / ram OC

It just didn't work on that board

always issues past 3000 mhz etc.

was running my 64gb kit of ram in 2666mhz for ages due to it

        • Was the RAM on the QVL? If yes, why didn't you RMA it? If no, lesson learned.

          • +2

@Bruceflix: I returned it via amazon's generous policy for a full refund

Brought a MSI B550 Tomahawk Max (the one with 2 ethernet ports)

and it works great :D ram works as expected too :D.

I brought a new kit of ram to see if that was the issue but it wasn't so it was the motherboard.

and honestly in my opinion the QVL thingy doesn't mean anything, sure it means it's like "certified" but that isn't really fair because majority of other non qvl ram should work if it's similar to the qvl numbers.

            • @AeymothSky:

              MSI B550 Tomahawk Max

That's what I used on my old build. Was faultless.

              • @Bruceflix: Yeah

after amazon refunded me the asrock one (i spent around $240 $250?) i was able to buy the msi one on sale for like $200 ish last november or something i think

    • Totally related - I have this B650 steel legend and have had no issues with hitting either XMP or EXPO ram timings.

      • Good to hear :D

This mobo is a B650E in all but name.
It has a PCIe 5.0 GPU slot and M.2 slot.
I wish I knew about this thing before i got the B650E riptide.

For just like $100 more, you can get an actual X870 motherboard on sale.

  • +3

I have been using this board with a 9800X3D for the last six months. It's been rock solid for me.

    • same here.
bargain of a mobo. with all the features for the price. no issues here so far.

Why not spend $20 more for a B850M?

    Something like this: https://www.msy.com.au/product/gigabyte-b850m-gaming-x-wifi6…

    • -3

Indeed, makes little sense to buy a B650 board for $300 when there are even X870 boards for just $400 on sale. I wouldn't spend over $150 for a B650 board.

      • +1

Why not get the x870 rs from scorptec for $399 including USB 4!

    • +1

The only advantage the gigabyte has is that it's smaller. otherwise you're paying $20 more for a board with slightly less stuff and a higher number in the name.

      • -1

Gigabyte has more and newer PCI-e and storage lanes, slightly better WiFi chipset, better ports (extra displayport that supporst 144hz vs 120hz, extra PS/2 port, only 2 less USB-A older gen ports), and is a newer chipset so will have more feature support and better overclocking support. Gigabyte is arguably a better brand for motherboards as well.

All worth it for the extra $20 imo.

As for the size, that does depend on your build, but if you wanted ATX instead of the mAXT it would still be better to spend a ~$80 more on an X870 deal for all of the above and more.

Gigabyte has more and newer PCI-e and storage lanes

No it doesn't, I didn't want to go through every single thing but you've forced my hand by being blind.
They both have a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. The asrock has an extra PCIe 4.0 x1 slot and an extra PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot.
Wifi is 6E on both and the chipset on AM5 is the same Prom21 chip on every board. They just put 2 of them on the higher end boards which B850 is not.

The onboard displayport does go up to 144hz and 4k, yes, but i don't consider that a selling point because that thing only works with integrated graphics and you're gonna be hard pressed to find games that run at 4k 144hz on an igpu.

Was that AI generated? because if you just read the specs you wouldn't have made that mistake about the PCIe version and m.2 slots.

Also if you're gonna nitpick the igpu display port i'm gonna nitpick that the asrock has way more USB posts and they top out at 20gbps vs the 10gbps max on the gigabyte. Like, personally I dont care about that either but that is a point to the asrock. Also the VRM is better on the asrock but they're both past the point of diminishing returns there.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Oh god you're actually arguing the USB now.
It does list the speed, you just dont know how to read it. USB 3.2 Gen 2 is 10Gb/sec. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is 20Gb/sec. If it doesn't say 2x2, it doesn't do 20Gb/sec.
And i dont think you know what pedantic means. I started this by saying the gigabyte board only has slightly less stuff, your the one that made a mountain of out a molehill about the spec differences. Which you then got factually wrong. So moron also applies better to you.

make sure you update to the latest bios, like 150+ 9800X3d's died on asrock boards in the last couple of months. supposedly fixed with latest bios.

  • Looking for a white ATX built, was aiming for the gigabyte aorus elite ice b650, i hope that drops in price too

  • Just don't pair this with a 9800X3D. Going by the continuous Reddit threads, it seems like that's a lethal combination …

  • 2dpc daisy chain = eww

If I'm paying 300!! for a b650 I want 1DPC or a functional nitro mode at least, this does neither.

Not too keen on this store as I went there to buy a system with cash but they wouldn't accept cash so I purchased elsewhere.
