Suggestion for Classic 80s and 90's Movies That Is Suitable for 10-12 Year Old

I started watching movies with my son, that I loved when I was a kid. He loves them, so I am looking for some suggestions.

We have done all the Star Wars originals and everything else Star Wars, so looking for some more old school suggestions.

We just started Jurassic Park (1993) this week, and will be going through them all.

I think I will do Back to the Future next.

What else would be on your list?

I assume some of these are tongue in cheek, but be careful what you expose your children to and at what age. I grew up pre-internet and remember being mentally scarred by certain movies I probably shouldn't have been taken to.

Nowadays though, if you just throw kids an iPad from the time they can point at stuff, they have probably been exposed to too much already. Innocence is not something you can get back and has been sacrificed at the alter of technology.

      OK boomer… /s

On a serious note, we are all trying to grow up so fast, it's sacred to let a child be who they are when they are young for a bit longer. Most of the crap we need to deal with is inevitable but doesn't have to be soemthing we carry the burden for so early

  • Speaking of classics I liked as a kid from the 90s gen :)

    Sandlot kids
    Richie Rich
    Flying V! (Mighty Ducks)
    Space Jam

  • Little Rascals - ooooh alfalfa :)

  • Back to the future trilogy!!

  • E.T.
    Bill & Teds excellent adventure
    Labyrinth
    The Right Stuff

    Probably be a bit old.

    Lost Boys
    Aliens
    Gremlins (this is M?)

    • Lost Boys & Aliens I think probably need an older child.

  • Robocop 3

  • Drop dead Fred
    Curley Sue
    Wayne's World
    School of Rock
    Karate kid

Pretty sure everything I was thinking to recommend has been said already, except for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which is an absolute classic, and the next time we sat down to watch a film the eldest said "I want to watch another movie like that"

Actually I think no one has mentioned Father of the Bride. I didn't watch that as a kid but it was a decent family watch recently.

  • Not 80s/90s but anything by the Marx Brothers and Kind Hearts and Coronets.

  • +1

    Lost Boys
    The Breakfast Club
    Stand by me
    Shawshank redemption
    Highlander
All went well with my 13 YO

  • I go wikipedia
Search Oscar winners by year and the nominees
This way you will know they are interesting
And chances are that you may haven’t watched them

    Swearing and sex scenes
Kids of this generation know it all
May be it will be a good time to educate them as these scenes are bound to come

Or just keep watching same CLEAN movies again and again but for how long

    I watched
    13 going on 30
    17 again
    Menaquen

    Just enjoyed the

  • Robocop! (Don't actually show him that)

  • Romper Stomper

  • Terminator 2 judgement day, they need to prepare for the upcoming Ai evolution

  • +1

  • +1

    Coming to America

  • Who’s your daddy and what does he do? Classic movie

  • +1

Some movies that I was going to add and a few borrowed from other lists that I agree with.

    • Princess Bride
    • Roger Rabbit
    • Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure
    • Labyrinth
    • Indiana Jones (original series)
    • Ghost Busters (original series)
    • The Last Starfighter (though maybe a little later)
    • Big Trouble in Little China (one of the tamest movies from this director, but a classic)
    • Never Ending Story
    • Dark Crystal (Maybe)

There are other movies that were fun, but the message given by them (the undertones) is wrong for these days. Probably needs a more developed teen brain to understand some of the contexts and things that are wrong.

Basically I think some of the '80s teen relationship movies, like The Breakfast Club and Weird Science, give wrong relationship advice.

Some maybes depending on maturity level

    • Lost Boys
    • Highlander
  • The Story of O.

I haven't seen it myself, but from the title I expect its one of a series of 26 about the letters of the alphabet, so it should be educational.

  • A Series of Unfortunate Events, Chronicles of Narnia

  • So I got my stremio hooked up to AI:

    The Goonies

    ET

    Back to the future

    princess bride

a girl walks home alone at night????

    Honey I shrunk the kids

    The sandlot

    Jurassic Park

    Jumanji

    Hook

    Matilda

    Little mermaid the 2024 version???

Beauty and the beast the dark tale????

    Aladdin

    Mufusa

  • Johnny 5
    Back to the future 1,2,3
    Action Jackson
    Commando
    Predator
    Aliens

  • The Goonies
    The transformers movie
Honey I shrunk the kids 1 and 2
    Never ending story
    The iron giant
    Space balls
    Flash gordon
    Willow
    … Care bears movie? 🤣
Chitty Chitty bang bang is great but that's before 80s I think

  • Top Gun. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet.

  • Akira (1998) is a cool cartoon they should watch
