Suggestion for Classic 80s and 90's Movies That Is Suitable for 10-12 Year Old

I started watching movies with my son, that I loved when I was a kid. He loves them, so I am looking for some suggestions.

We have done all the Star Wars originals and everything else Star Wars, so looking for some more old school suggestions.

We just started Jurassic Park (1993) this week, and will be going through them all.

I think I will do Back to the Future next.

What else would be on your list?

I tried to get them to watch Star Wars, the first one with Alec Guiness.

They 10 and 12 said it was boring.

    I am now child free.

    • +4

I started with Clone Wars animated 1st, Rebels and then Bad Batch. Moved onto episodes 4-6, then 1-3.

      • +21

        I tried Clone Wars too.

You cannot negotiate with people who believe The Minecraft movie is epic cinema.

    • im sorry but you have failed as a father

i mean the sequals were horrible but the OT is probably the greatest trilogy of all time

Rebels and Clone wars Animated might get your kids more interested my Son loves the Clone Wars Animated series

    • I introduced my 10 year old a few years back to the original Star Wars and he loves it. I reckon he's rewatched it a dozen times now

    • Eh? You showed your kids Star Wars, which they didn't like, so you got rid of the kids??? Nice!

      • +3

        they left him no option

        • +2

          Only Siths deal in absolutes

    • What did you do with the kids? Asking for a friend

      • +1

They probably thought someone else was their father after ESB.

      • +1

        Left them with Aunt Beru

    • +1

I wish I'd known this technique. My kids are still living with me 😅

  • +12

    Definitely Porky's

    • +4

Similarly do not forget Trading Places. A scene lived in my memory for years afterwards.

      • yes they are real and they're spectacular

(i know that is a different show and different person but…apt)

    The Goonies

  • This pre dates your target but> At that age, Educational * customised martial arts films* aka The Three Stooges.

    • Good suggestion, my 8-year-old will be more into that.

      • +5

The early Jackie Chan films are very entertaining- watch him fight 50 guys armed with a step ladder

        • +1

Geez, that brings back memories. Rumble in the Bronx was such a classic repeat film for me.

      • Try this with him as a taster. See if you raise a grin
(Poor quality, there's probs better Q out there)

If it's a boy: Fast Times at Ridgemont High

    /s

We'll have to deal with in a couple of years, is it better they watch it at home or at their friends' place?

  • +26

    Princess Bride

    • "Twue Wuv"

    • +1

      inconceivable!

    • André the Giant should have won an Oscar.

  • +9

    Die hard
    Ferris Bueller
    Blues Brothers
    Beverly Hills cop

    • +4

      Too much swearing.

      • +9

In our house we call it potty mouth so we don't have to imagine the bad words. The kids are mainly in their 20s now and I'm worried they might hear the swears elsewhere.

    • +1

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was the first 80s movie I watched as a kid. I was probably a similar age and it became one of my favourite films. Great recommendation.

  • +15

    Home Alone

I loved Indiana Jones as a kid but now as a parent not sure.

    Jumanji

    • Did not think of Indiana Jones, good suggestion. Have done home alone, Jumanji is on the list now also.

      • +7

        Also Iron Giant and Tron

      • Having rewatched Jumanji a few years ago…it’s actually pretty dark/creepy by modern standards. Definitely one of those ‘we watched this as kids?!’ moments for me.

    • +1

I loved Indiana Jones as a kid but now as a parent not sure.

      Why are you not sure?

      • +2

Punching Nazis should always be in fashion

        • +4

And yet the modern day ones seem to be untouchable

          • +2

            @Jackson: Stop voting them in.

            • -1

@heal: I don't typically vote jn other countries elections though…

              • @Jackson: Ok, fair enough. I guess not everyone on OzBargain is from Australia.

  • +3

    my 5yo are enjoying Jumanji

  • Western and AI/science fiction movies.

    • Anything from 1930-2020 is good

  • +9

    The Dark Crystal

The kid with the broken halo
(as others have said) Indiana Jones
    Cloak and dagger
    Back to the future
    Teenwolf
    The peanut butter soluition
    The nutty professor

  • +9

Not all are strictly 1980s/90s, but:

    Willow
    Hook
    The Princess Bride
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
    Big
    Stand by Me
    Batman - 1966
    Superman I, II
    Superman Returns

And fun with super corny effects, also a TV show but:
    The Greatest American Hero

And finally, perhaps in a year or 2:
    V, V: The Final Battle
    Batman - 1988
    Highlander
    Amadeus

    • +1

V was awesome, as was highlander.

      • I just rewatched V, V: The Final Battle with my 15 year old. She loved it.

The effects are still great in some areas (shuttle dropping down, shooting at Donovan in the street), terrible in others (Diana and the hamster), but considering it was made in the 1980s for TV (not movie), it's damn good. The overall story/premise remains solid

Against my warnings, my daughter insisted we also watch the TV series; She understands now… 😆

  • +8

Ghostbusters 1 I think was fairly tame.

Ghostbusters 2 was a bit full on for me as a 6 year old though lol. Vigo the Carpathian lives rent free in my mind even now in my late 30s lmao

    • +1

I saw Ghostbusters 2 when I was 8 and had nightmares about it

    • +1

  • +7

Police Academy series as approved by @DashCam AKA Rolts

    • +3

      Whooooop, whooooop!

    • +3

When Marge told me she was going to the police academy I thought it would be fun and exciting, like that movie… Spaceballs! But instead it's been painful and disturbing like that movie … Police Academy.

  • Adding the Labyrinth and the Secret of NIMH. Still my fave animated film of all time.

    • Is the secret of NIMH like the riddle of steel, but for batteries?

      • Lol it's genetically altered rats 🐀

  • Family Ties - TV series with Michael J Fox

    • OMG the one where they turned their house into a bed and breakfast!!

  • Soul Man with C Thomas Howell.

    • This was one of my classics, but doesnt get played at all for obvious although also potentially unfortunate reasons

    • The peeping scene and the rape scene is uncomfortable

      • Not sure if you're a grown adult or not, but perhaps stick with Paw Patrol if that's the case. Or Bluey.

        • Just wasn't grown with rape and incest that's all.

How does it feel to be an mf?

  • +2

Predator. The finest 80s action movie.
