Sometimes I miss my old Dedica. Maybe not as capable or as pretty as the Breville Barista Express, but making a coffee was simpler, and I didn't care as much about the result. Now with the Breville, I'm weighing my beans, adjusting the grind size, tamping more carefully, watching the pressure gauge, etc.

this. Dedica is a very underrated machine.

Egad! All that effort for a simple cuppa? Surely you must have lotsa spare time to waste. Why not just simply mix with a spoon Nescafe Instant Coffee+hot water=☕️

Or get another Dedica. Time-laborious shenanigans avoided and will probably taste nicer and better yet, give you more free time posting at OZB instead.

Surely you could do the same with the BBE as you did with the Dedica if you use the pressurised portafilter?

    • Consider grounded Lavazza Qualita Oro 4x250g, best-before date is stamped 2 yrs from production-date, vacuum-packed, FINELY-grounded: high pressure tamping will cause filter-block & periodic sale @ 50% discount. https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/659600.

Breville expresso-machine: I'm using a 20 yrs old 15-bar unit that look the same as ESP8XL: but mostly black-plastic. Original-pump still work, but sure frother broke, silicon-seal replaced, with some metal-back-panel rusted-thru due to water-leaked from container.

i got this machine, and it does a fine job.

  • Bought one for myself and one for my folks a little less than a year ago. One of them had to go into the shop after 6mths as it just wasn't producing steam very well despite descaling multiple times. The other one has been working well. It's a perfect little bit of kit especially if you don't have a ton of kitchen table space as it's pretty damn narrow of a machine. I think I got mine for about $160-$170 and I would've saved far more than that in replacing my outside coffees just in this past year.

Had one, got rid of it.

Made average coffee with the pressurised basket, made terrible coffee with an unpressurised basket. Experimented a lot with grind size- the problem wasn't the grinder.

Much simpler brew methods produced equal or better results than this half-assed machine.

    • I agree it's not much chop. I tried modding the pressure and still no good. Not impossible to make a great shot, but quite difficult. I have also had a bambino and bambino plus. They were marginally better. I now have a flair pro 2 and it is far better than the appliances. All same grinder.

      • Thanks for confirming - I decided to cut my loses rather than try modding the machine. So it's good to know that there is limited upside.

I've been tempted by the Robot, but I'm keeping all cheap and cheerful with the humble V60.

  • it has a face

I've bought mine from a deal 4 years ago and still use it every day. Great little machine that fits in every kitchen. Ofc there's more fancy ones but for the price and size I doubt there's something better.

This or the $1.50 triple shot espressos from 7-11?

  • Kilowatts: 1300

Holy ****! That's enough power to boil a bucket of water in about 2.5 seconds.
