Missed the deal when it was cheaper last time, around $250 as I recall. But that was old version. Now looks like they have cleared all those stock.
This one, not sure about performance and quality wise, has a better looking and is packed with Wifi and more funtions, which are might not really necessary for someone.

This is a compressor dehumidifier, which won't be as good as a desiccant dehumidifier for colder temps. There are pro's and con's for each type. DYOR.

    • any desiccant recommendations?

I bought two last year and will be buying another one.

Yeh, I own 3 too and itching for more still. Weird how they seem to multiply.

  • Any idea on the efficiency of a dry cycle with a ducted aircon vs these smaller units?

    • +1

These will heat the room while drying, versus the Drying cycle of a Ducted system which cools the air in the room.

      • Thanks
Just wonder how many litres per kilowatt at the same ambient temp

        • I'm not sure it's that simple.
Assuming you have a specific area that you want to dry, a dedicated unit will be cheaper to operate cause it will continually dry the air in that space, not air from some other space and at some stage it'll reach its target humidity and shut off.

The Ducted system will dry the air going into the return and then pump that dried air to the space you're trying to dry out. (unless the return is in that same space)
As a result a ducted system will not know when the target area is sufficiently dry and will run indefinitely.

        • The ac wont keep same ambient temp, it will cool. Its apples to oranges. I recently bought the desiccant version of this and its clearly superior to my AC (MHI) dry mode in every way. In summer the AC is fine but in winter its not great to dehumidify.

      • The dehumidifier in the OP is a compressor version. It won't heat the room. It'll cool the room if anything.

        • Choice reviews include a Room heating (W) value for dehumidifiers, all compressor/refrigerant models listed heat the room, some more than desiccant models.

        • +2

          It MUST heat the room.
The condensor side of the unit will cool (and dehumidify) the air, the compresssor side will heat it, and because work is being done, it will heat the air more than it cools it..

I've been testing this out - internal starting temps 19C (poor insulation), 70% humidity, room size 25m2 open area (flowing to hallway, other bedrooms)

Using compressor dehumidifier 35L model (ausclimate) @ 500w/hr, takes about 2 hours to bring to 60% humidity, temp increases to 20-21C

Using aircon (MHI) in cool/dry mode, can take it down to 60% humidity in about 1 hour, set air con temp at 20C (seems like higher temps don't do anything to bring humidity down as fast), @1kw/hr, rooms feels more chilly

In winter I would use the dehumidifier as it makes room warmer vs the air con for the same amount of consumption used

      • Noting that you're probably measuring RH. So a warmer room at 60% is more humid than a cooler room at 60% RH.

        rooms feels more chilly

They are more chilly, as the Ducted system is pumping the heat outside.
Your ducted AC is undoubtedly chewing way more than 500W/h too.

  • The manual states this unit has an auto defrost function at lower temperatures, which I don’t think the older unit had. Hoping for someone to do a test if this makes a difference.

Not a large or smart one like this Dehumidifier, but Kmart also has a good alternative

I have been running two Kmart dehumidifiers for the past two years in Melbourne, and I am satisfied with their performance.

    • Says no stock for me in Sydney.

  • Thanks. Got one for 275 bucks after using coupons in my account. For the spare room and possibly bathroom use as well. Cant really argue with that.
