In typical fashion I purchased this last week and thought I got a good deal of $984. All major other stores had it for $1044, I managed to get a price match to an ebay discount.

Don't think it's an all time low, but still a good deal nonetheless.

7ch, 100W rated power, 7 HDMI in/1 out, 4K/120Hz, HDR10+, DOLBY ATMOS.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and MusicCast multi-room audio

OP can you keep us posted with what you are buying next too?

    • +4

Yeah I think OP needs to buy a PS5

    • Best wait a week after he's posted and then it'll be cheaper.

      • +10

        That’s the joke bud

    • +5

      I know that's a joke, but I kinda feel like I should.

But also shouldn't say what I am looking for next, cos then it'll never drop in price.

      • just say, don't be such a (profanity)!

      • +1

What speakers are you using for this or recommend? I feel that either I am going deaf or can't bloody understand a lot of dialogue these days.

    • In typical fashion, though.

  • Do any of you even connect 7.2 or do you just do 5.1 ?

    • +3

5.1.2 with upward firing atmos speakers.

    • +1

      5.2.2 with this amp

    • +1

      7.2.4 for my main setup.

      • unbelievable!!!

      • That’s a lot of sub-woof

      • Woooof Wooof ))) )) ) )

    • +2

I just do 5 without the .1 because the lower frequencies are sent to the front towers. I think the 7.2 is a waste of money for all those extra speakers that barely get used, unless you are playing the correct coded format. In the olden days they had Matrix that was the two fronts and a center and that sounded better that all these new fancy formats and positioning systems now. Just spend the money on two awesome front speakers and a centre.

      • +8

The most boomer thing I'll probably read all day haha

        • +1

Was so good though, you don't understand. Young kids haha

          • +3

@9hundred: There's not a chance that a 3.0 setup from 20 years ago can get anywhere close to a fully fledged 7.1.4 setup with positional audio lol

            • +1

@DiscountForThee: Depends on what you are listening to. 7.1.4 setup for a tv show or movie coded in stereo is a waste of money, unless the amp can spread it out. If you have shitty speakers, it will sound worse than a quality 3.0 setup guaranteed.

              • +4

@9hundred: Who is watching movies in stereo unless it's the only format for the film? Even streaming services have compressed atmos tracks available.

              • +5

@9hundred: What do you think people that own 7.1/7.2/7.2.2/7.2.4 audio setups use them to watch, free to air commercial TV? They’re regularly watching 1080p Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays or rips from them, there is plenty of them with lossless 7.1, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X audio tracks, and also they watch content on streaming services with lossy Dolby Atmos tracks.

                • @HuzzahIndeed: so no Netflix then? You can only watch dvd's/blu-rays so many times.

                  • -3

@9hundred: Also, there is plenty of quality content on FREE to air commercial tv. I just don't see the point is such extremely expensive multi channel systems when you will only occasionally bask in the glory of a luxury setup and most channels are dormant unless called upon. I would rather have a 3.0 old school system that fires on all cylinders with a deep and rich sound. All these HDMI 4, 5, 6.1.2, 6.11.12, 7.19.11 just for clout!

                    • +1

@9hundred: People that care about picture and audio quality that want high quality don’t watch free to air TV that’s riddled with compression artefacts for a great movie experience.

What does it matter what you would rather, what your opinion is, and what you do or don’t see the point in?

                      • -2

@HuzzahIndeed: reeeeeelaxxxxxxx, just cuz you spent an absolute fortune on it hahahaha ….could get the same experience from 3.0 setup, …so sour hahahaha

                        • @9hundred: The only person here who isn’t relaxed that needs to is yourself, you seem to care a lot about what other people you don’t know choose to spend their money on.

Your old Yamaha 3.0 setup that you’re championing sounds like it’s just as old as you are, and with your aging ears it’s no wonder you are convinced it still sounds great and is better than modern setups.

                          • -1

@HuzzahIndeed: I am not old actually, probably younger than yourself. I just know about sound and what works best. The marketing and hype around these multi channel setups are what convinces 'the young' to pour all their money into. All I am saying is that two quality tower speakers and a solid centre will out perform most multi speakers ones.

                            • -1

@9hundred: How do you know how old I am? If you’re not old your comments have certainly made you sound like a boomer.

I don’t care about what your opinions are regarding what is or isn’t marketing hype, do you honestly believe you’re important enough that people should care about what you say and what your views are?

You think you know what you’re talk about, but it’s obvious you don’t, and that you wouldn’t last a day amongst truly knowledgeable and experienced people, like you find on AVSforum. Start posting there now and see how far you get, it will be entertaining to see for a laugh:

@HuzzahIndeed: I have for many years before you BOOMER!

                                • @9hundred: Well if you have been a member there for years it hasn’t done you any good, because obviously you haven’t learnt anything.

I’m not a boomer. Are you some kind of weirdo stalker? You seem to think you know things about me, have we clashed over there before, that would explain why you’re acting like a crazy idiot in this discussion.

                  • @9hundred: I said for watching streaming services too, is Netflix not a streaming service?

“You can only watch dvd's/blu-rays so many times” - That depends how many DVDs/Blu-rays/4K Blu-rays the person owns.

                    • @HuzzahIndeed: netflix doesn't even have enough bandwidth for your 12.4.6 channel setup anyway

                      • @9hundred: That’s the second time you haven’t read my comment properly. I said for watching some content on streaming services with lossy Dolby Atmos tracks. Do you not know what Dolby Atmos is and how many speakers can be used for it?

                        • @HuzzahIndeed: I know, but it's only for certain applications.

                          • @9hundred: And I’ve already said in response to that there are hundreds of 1080p Blu-rays and thousands of 4K Blu-rays that have 7.1, or Dolby Atmos or DTS-X tracks , and there is also plenty of content with Dolby Atmos tracks on streaming services.

                            • @HuzzahIndeed: ok, yes sure so long as your internet is rock solid. I have superloop and sometimes it struggles to do 1080 HD, let alone the audio tracks for 7.1 or Dolby Atmos or DTS-S in 4 or 8k.

                              • +1

@9hundred: You don’t need the internet to put a disc in a DVD or Blu-ray player to watch it. For streaming, I’m sure plenty of people that have audio setups with more than 3 or 5 speakers have fast reliable internet. I have fibre to premise NBN with a good quality router and fast connection, so I’m fine.

                                • @HuzzahIndeed: nice….seems you don't really need to search for bargains then. so rich!

                                  • -1

@9hundred: Oh, so you're not just old, you've also got other issues

                                  • +1

@9hundred: “So rich” - So is that what you promoting 20 year old Yamaha AVR gear plus 3.0 and you going off of the rails in this thread has been all about, you not being able to afford a 7.1/7.2/7.2.2/7.2.4 audio setup and being jealous of other people who can?

Your whole argument has just been stupid, there are plenty of people with good/great sounding modern AVRs that have purchased good quality and performing front L+R speakers and centre speakers, who have expanded on 3.0 by adding 2-4 side and back surround speakers and 2-4 ceiling speakers, as well as subwoofers.

Funnily enough I actually still own a Yamaha receiver (model # RX-V661) from about 20 years ago that I use in one of my guest bedroom setups, it’s definitely not on par with or better than modern AVRs that you’re glorifying Yamaha AVRs from 20-30 years ago to be. My brother also owns a mid range Yamaha modal AVR from around 2008-2010, and it’s not comparable either.

                                    • @HuzzahIndeed: I'm so old, that I can't possibly comprehend the young and rich being able to buy so much high end audio equipment that can easily be replicated by a much cheaper setup. Bloody kids these days know it all, but have identity issues, probably identifies as a receiver. 😂

  • +5

Decent unit but it doesn't have full HDMI2 2.1 bandwidth, most people wont care or notice but if you do then get something else.

    • +1

worthy point… especially if you're planning on connecting everything to this as a central hub.

  • I can't decide between this or the Denon AVR-X1800H.

Yamaha doesn't really get a mention in most Home theatre recommendations around the internet but Denon does. Yamaha seems a little better on paper from what I can tell. I have a Yamaha now and it's been flawless for the past 10 years but thought it might be time for a change

    • +1

got Denon AVR-X1800H from TGG, happy so far.

    • +1

I use a Denon AVR-X1800H in my bedroom, it’s ok. I paid $759 for it from The Good Guys 6 months ago, can’t expect much better for that price.

      • That's a crazy price, cheapest I've seen this year is about $914

        • +1

The Good Guys had a commercial deal on it in December, I have access to those deals but I didn’t buy it through their commercial store, I just walked into one of their retail stores close by and asked if they would do it for the same price that was listed on their commercial store, and they said yes.

      • Yeah I do recall see it there but I've gone and checked and it's no longer listed.

    • +3

I have had both Denon and Yamaha. Yamaha is so much better!

      • Have you owned both of these exact models, or just the brands in general? In what way was the Yamaha better? Cheers

        • Owned the Denon brand one before, but compared to the Yamaha, it doesn't have excellent and useful sound modes like Dolby enhanced that makes better use of the rear speakers and sounds much deeper and full.

          • @9hundred: Both receievers being discussed here have the newest Dolby audio offering (Dolby Atmos) and are comparable in those features.

          • +1

@9hundred: Also, with Yamaha, you can individually EQ each speaker to your liking.

            • @9hundred: Yes, this is the same for the Denon too…

              • -1

@Sweefu2: no Denon doesn't allow such fine tuning

                • +1

@9hundred: Yes, in fact all of the current Denon AVR-X series have it, as do most low-mid range+ receivers these days, it's common.

You can read about it in the manual here if you like

                  https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX1800H/eu/en/GFNFSYuyviicam.php

                  • -3

@Sweefu2: ok fine, you can remove the neg vote now

                    • -2

@9hundred: Why should the member remove their neg assuming it was even them, you reap what you sow.

                      • -2

@HuzzahIndeed: I know it was him and you added another one yourself, so yeah you reap what you sow ya donkey!

                        • -1

@9hundred: You just proved my point about assuming because I didn’t neg your comment yesterday, I just did now though changing it from -2 to -3, since you accused me of it.

      • +2

+1 bought a Denon and returned it for a Yamaha

        So much better.

        • It would be great to hear your thoughts on this in more detail, what you didn't like with the Denon, and what you preferred with the Yamaha? Cheers!

          • @Sweefu2: I had issues with CEC and my TV, they just didnt work well.

I also bought it because it had Chromecast Audio built in - which worked really poorly, like took ages to action anything if at all.

So I returned it and the Yamaha just worked and sounded great out of the box. The auto config stuff in them is really cool.

    • Which one has full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth?

      • +1

        Denon

    • I had this exact Yamaha and today have the Denon x1800h. Life is much better with the Denon.
HDMI 2.1 and an actual working eARC with my TV. It is also smaller and has nicer UI.

Overall very happy for selling the Yamaha and getting the Denon.

  • +6

You're better off with the Denon AVR-X1800H. It has full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 support and better room correction.

Cheapest option now is Amazon $999 or Selby eBay $944 with code, but I expect it to go lower through June.

The current Yamaha range was released in 2020 and is due for a refresh.

    • Thanks you've sold me on the X1800H

    • I've had this Yamaha one since it got released several years back. Can't agree more.
(Yamaha isn't bad this particular model can be improved)

  • Yamaha have some useful sound modes like dolby enchanced that makes use of the back speakers.

  • -1

Don’t need a full blown receiver but I need something to pair with my tv and manage sonos soundbar, Apple TV, and other inputs from my tv unit so I can only have a cable run up to the tv for power and hdmi.

Any recommendations for this? Is a hdmi switch a better option for me?

  • +2

There is a refurbished option as well from Excel Hifi
Excel Hifi - Yamaha RX-V6A Refurbished

I have bought speakers and a receiver from them before with no issues. They also sometimes put some of their stuff on their ebay store if you can wait for a good discount code to come up.

  • I have this one. Pretty happy

I run 7.2 with an 85" tlc tv. My pc runs to it as well with a 20 meter fibre optic at 120hz 4k with a 4090. This is how i play most console type games.

For plex and streaming apps I just run everything natively on the tv, i gave up bothering with nvidia sheilds and the likes.

  • I can't believe how this hasn't dropped much in price in the past five years. I bought this in December 2020 for AUD$1044.80. :o

  • Yamas amp sre really good

  • +2

Is this amplifier affected by this issue?

YAMAHA initially intended to support QMS (Quick Media Switching) within the HDMI 2.1 specification. However, YAMAHA later discovered that these models cannot be updated to support QMS via firmware. This is due to an unforeseen hardware limitation caused by QMS specification change in HDMI 2.1a. This hardware limitation affects current AV receivers, including Yamaha. (Information corrected in May 2023)

    • Who cares, the only thing QMS does is remove the 1 second of blank screen when your TV switches frame rates (ie when you start a movie). It couldn't be any less important 😂

  • Does anyone remember this short lived local miracle speakers called Dream Acoustics

  • +1

    I paid $850 for this in 2022

  • +1

I paid $799 for this in 2021.. Horrible amp. I felt very much ripped off by Yamaha who promised full 48gbs hdmi 2.1 bandwidth only to turn around and say no..

    • In the same boat unfortunately.. Just the amp part itself isn't that bad. But HDMI, room correction could be improved. Wouldn't buy in 2025.

  • +1

I went pretty deep down a rabbit hole after spending hours trying to get true hd working on my rx- 485. The current receiver doesn’t handle earc true hd pass through properly and I can’t get auto lip sync to trigger when plugged directly into the avr.

I narrowed it down to this and the denon x1800h. Denon has far superior earc capability and true hdmi 2.1, I I went for that. It was 999 on amazon yesterday, seems to have gone back up to 1049.
