AmEx Explorer Card via Referral: 110,000 Bonus Rewards Points, $400 Travel Credit, $4,000 Spend in 3 Months, $395 Annual Fee

reposting from last related deal

I went to refer a friend for the American Express Explorer, and saw that the bonus is higher than usual:

Higher offer just for your friend. They will receive 110,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when they apply for the American Express Explorer® Credit Card using your referral link, are approved and spend $4,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from Card approval date. New American Express Card Members only. T&Cs apply. This is a personalised offer which may be withdrawn or changed at any time.

Seems to be available via referral only, but great news - you can help out a fellow OzBargainer and apply using a referral link below, they'll also get a bonus (40k).
If you go straight to the website in the deal, you'll probably only get the 75k points offer (your mileage may vary, it seems to have dynamic offers to some extent).
I see 75k in Safari and Chrome, and 100k in Edge on the main page without the referral link.

Annual fee is $395 but you get a $400 travel credit each year, a range of insurances, etc.

Key benefits:

  • 110,000 bonus points for new AmEx members
  • $400 travel credit each year
  • Earn 2pts per dollar spent (with ability to earn more e.g. with Shop Small) - 1pt per dollar on purchases at government bodies
  • Domestic & International travel insurance (international includes COVID-19 coverage)
  • Smartphone screen insurance covering up to $500 for repairs if you break your screen when you pay for your phone outright or monthly bill with your American Express Explorer Credit Card
  • 2x AmEx international lounge entries

Other insurances:

  • Buyer’s Advantage, extending the manufacturers' warranty by up to 12 months on eligible items purchased with your Card
  • Purchase Protection, covering you for the replacement of eligible items purchased on your Card
  • Refund Protection, cover for eligible items purchased on your Card should a store refuse a return

Amex referral offers are usually worse than their standard bonus reward point deals, and you can't double dip.

I'd wait for a 150k non-referral point deal if you want this card tbh.

Not necessarily. My account shows a referral offer of 110,000 bonus points to referee, and 40,000 bonus to myself if successful. Sure, someone can wait for 150k bonus points, but when will it be back?

      • Not sure why you got negged, but I haven't seen 150k bonus points for a while either? Did a quick search and offers have indeed been 100-110k bonus points in recent times.

        • They're being downvoted because they missed the point of my comment.

key words were "I'd wait" not "there's a current offer"

Also - they just need to refresh a few times, try in incognito or another browser and they'd see a 110k offer available to them without a referral. Amex just seems to randomize the offers a little bit - but it's easy to reset it.

Just wanted to add that one benefit most people don't consider is the insurance on this card. I got really sick recently while on a trip to Japan, and had to call an ambulance to go the emergency. Chubb, the underlying insurer for AMEX replied and paid us for all our expenses less excess of $250 within 2 hours. The insurance alone is more than worth $400 in some cases per year if you travel a bunch (and also covers your spouse). just need to be aware of T&Cs as always

  • i usually cancel after 1 year and when asked the reason I say cause I joined for the bonus points to which they usually will give me another round of bonus points to stay.

    • Good idea.

When I signed up for a Coles Mastercard, the first year was fee free. They upgraded to the higher yearly fee platinum card, where I earn more points. Every year before the fee is due, I ring to cancel, stating "I won't pay the annual fee" and every year they wave it. On year 11 now saving me around $1k.

If I forget to pay my card and get a fee, I also ring and say I wish to cancel and they waive it every time.

I also once whinged once for being on hold for 30min and said I will look elsewhere for a better rewards card and they gave me a $100 credit (They claim I'm a loyal customer).

They make enough money on merchant fees IMO, so I have no guilt.

    • You have a charge card? Retention offers for non-charge cards haven't been offered for a while now. Last one I got was two years ago, and even then I had cancel and then reinstate the card. Since then, two times I've gone through the cancel, been told that there's no offers for my explorer, then reinstate, dance. Lots of similar stories on Aus Freq Flyer.

New customers only? I currently have an active account.

  • does anyone know how to track/view when you can reapply to another bank credit card after the exclusion period? p.s. ive lost track how many i've turned in past 6 months but dont know when i can reapply again

    • Best way is probably ring up and ask?

I file e-mail notification of sign up and cancellation as a reference to track churn periods.
