The 10th gen Intel's are not too different from gen 8?
    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-Core-i5-10310U-vs…

Gen 8 x390 (same form factor) goes for sub $200 on eBay.

    Ram is also solder-ed.

    • Good pickup. I wouldn't have even thought of checking the performance.

Found it kind of wild when I realized that the 6th gen to 10th gen intel's were all 14nm, meaning there wouldn't be much efficiency savings between any of them

      • +4

Things kept that way until AMD came out with Ryzen. Purely laziness on R&D (cost too, having a monopoly).

Edit: some better condition refurb-ed x390 goes for low $300.

    • sweetener is the touch screen, means it’s glass so easier to clean and no issues with scratches even if you don’t use the touch function, which i don’t.

Be mindful the warranty on the battery and charger is only 1-month, so it's probably safe to assume these refurbs contain aging (close to the end of their life) batteries:

    Buried in the FAQ:
Yes, all our refurbished products come with a 6 to 12-month warranty, as specified on the product listing. Batteries and chargers are covered for 1 month

It would be nice to get some clarification about the batteries because they also claim:

Our meticulous refurbishment process ensures that every device we sell functions like new
    https://computerandlaptopsales.com.au/refurbishment-process-…

This suggests they have 'like new battery life', and if that's the case it's odd they don't mention the batteries have been replaced?…. (odds are the "functions like new" is just a bit of false advertising)

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We understand your concerns, and we’d like to clarify that we have not provided any misleading information.

As part of our refurbishment policy, all batteries undergo testing. If a battery holds 80% or more of its original capacity, we consider it within acceptable performance standards and do not replace it. However, if the battery falls below that threshold, we do replace it with a brand new one.

We also offer a 1-month money-back guarantee for customers who are not satisfied with their purchase, providing additional peace of mind.

We genuinely appreciate your analysis and feedback, it helps us continue to improve. Our goal is always to add value to every purchase and ensure our customers are satisfied with both the quality and the service they receive.

A battery at 80% is generally considered 'end of life', (they tend to drop off fast below 80%), so a battery at 81% is certainly not "functions like new", or "performs like new", as you claim…

Often parents buy these refubs for their kids for school use, and the batteries are likely to be cycled daily, so if they get a lappy with a battery at 81% health, after 6 months the odds are they're going to have to fork out around $100 to replace the battery…

You should really be upfront and honest about the battery condition and the 1-month warranty… To claim a 1-year warranty with no mention of the limited warranty on the battery is kinda dodgy…

        • +1

Agree. It's just being honest to state the battery issue and many folks might buy it to leave it plugged in next to the old TV or in the kitchen/study. Why not simply state the reality and let people decide vs. sketchy fine-print.

            @Geekomatic: Yeh… My Dell 7390 2in1 - i5-8350u, cost $300 18 months ago is a good example, it came with a 87% battery…

I run it powered 99% of the time, either bedside at home or in my campervan, so I've set a charge profile in the bios to run the battery between 60% & 80%, and in 18 months the battery condition has stayed at the 87%… On the odd occasion I need to use the battery when travelling I change the charge profile so it charges to 95% so I get near full battery life from it…

It's not hard to nurse an ageing battery in the long term if you don't need to cycle it daily…

usually these types of laptops come from the corporate world, at work they are usually docked as people use external monitors, and they typically only run on batteries at meetings when away from your desk and dock. my laptop is 4 years old and still runs all day if undocked and i’m at training. they are in a different league to the jb hifi consumer models. i got a refurb for home so doesn’t have the work lock-down bloat, grade A, love it, only reason id buy new is i want an oled screen or because i prefer 15” , find 13” bit small.

        • Yup!

I have been looking for something like the T480 as I want a refurb laptop where I can upgrade 2 memory slots and the storage.

What is the latest Lenovo refurb where you can do that? or was the t480 the last of the non soldered memory stick?

    • Got myself a refurb Thinkpad L14 Ryzen Gen 3 off ebay which has 2 slots to I believe 64gb 3200 max, fits 2242 and 2230 SSDs (2230s can use an adapter but apparently still fit and mount fine without, and apparently double sided SSDs technically fit also if uncomfortably), and has a microsd slot for more slow storage. Only downside is no thunderbolt out.

How is this a bargain at almost $500? What a bunch of jokers.

  • +2

Significantly cheaper normal price elsewhere after 10 seconds on Google. Most likely even cheaper options available.

For this price, its a very slow processor. Recommend to check cpubenchmart.net first before buying.

Better off getting a i5 1135G7 off ebay.
Some of the b-grade Dynabook PORTEGE X30W-J Intel i5 1135G7 where going for ~$330 before discount (20% off, etc).
    A-grade was ~$400 before discounts.
Memory and SSD are upgradable, etc.
    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/3698vs3150vs3830/Intel-…

Plastic shell, okay touch screen (not great, but usable). Very light. fans go crazy when running llms, etc.
    ymmv

  • Refurb, probably because of Lenovo's persistent problem of screens breaking, replace screen, breaks again! …

  • The first photo is a 15" model.

  • 10th gen for $500 ? no thanks
