The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse Puffer Jacket A$366.16 (Was A$610, Sizes S to XXL) Delivered @ Mainline Menswear

90

It's getting cold… time to whip out Patagonia's prettier, less insulated and poorer warranty cousin.

Good price for an in season product. Free ship from UK. I was suss on the site but they're owned by JD sport with decent trust pilot score (Not sure if I even trust trust pilot)

By far the cheapest I could find in black at this time of year, although it is still sad compared to historical prices.

    Why are these so expensive?

      The logo.

        Naarm-core influencers

        • Ew naarm-core don’t wear north face. It’s a Sydney brand.

Dan Andrews DNA has a price.

  • They use northland goose

Warmer than a $100 Macpac Halo?

    • +5

My exact thought. Very hard to justify.

    • +1

about an extra 100 fill goose downs worth

Now I enjoy killing geese every bit as much as the next man, but part of the appeal of the uber-warm Halo is that I don't feel like a Michelin Man or Costanza-esque Gore-tex© Warrior as I waddle down frozen streets.

That said, I'm probably not the target market since my commitment to fashion seldom extends beyond Industrie, Tommy Hilfiger and Charles Tyrwhitt, but I appreciate the response, replete with goose down equivalencies. And to think that Americans can't even wrap their collective heads around the metric system…

    • A Macpac Halo kept me warm in Paris, London, Zurich (inc. up some 3000m+ mountains) & various parts of Scotland last Nov/Dec with no issues.

    • Good price if you like pink. I'd like to see similar price for black

Is patagonia best brand for this type of jackets?

    • Patagonia would be my pick over TNF, recently picked up a couple of Arc'teryx though and they're also decent

      (I own a Nupse, it's bulky af)

The specs of this jacket are pretty bad. Heavy, not THAT warm, 700 down. Can get better down in better outer material for same price and it's half the weight and works in snow.

Or a cheap Uniqlo et al jacket that works in the city well enough.

But then I don't understand fashion at all, so I get that I'm probably missing the point here.

    • Link to the better jackets for same price?

      • +3

In terms of specs, for eg this (but lots of other ones, this was just first link for first jacket that came to mind): https://www.absolute-snow.com/rab-electron-pro-insulated-hoo…

Not making any claims about how fashionable it is (but if I did, it isn't)

        • Not sure why i got negged for a simple question, but there you go. Wasnt being snarky but hard to tell in text i guess.

Was just curious. Thanks for the link. Off to NZ in a couple weeks so considering my options. Not to ski, but will stand around a fair bit, being cold probably.

Warm > fashion within reason. The Rab looks no less ugly to me than the NF if thats any indication of my lack of fashion sense! Lol.

Not the hugest fan of any puffers I've tried so far tbh. Will probs just go with extra layers under a wind/waterproof outer.

If you see this and have any other good options at that sort of price as a max id be curious.

@Fredorishi: Not sure why you got negged either, seemed like a normal question to me.

If not climbing mountains, you can get away with one of the cheaper puffs (e.g. Macpac, Kathamandu etc.). Hoods are good to have. If you want something nicer, get ones with Pertex Quantum outer fabric or similar fancier materials.

Higher loft down = warmer; more down = warmer. Climbers etc. pay lots of $$$ for getting the warmth via loft rather than by using more down, because it means they save weight. But high grade down is really expensive. If not doing stuff where weight matters, just go for a jacket that uses more of lower loft down, e.g. 600/650 fill power that Macpac uses a lot, or UNIQLO which uses higher loft down from memory. It ends up way cheaper and you probably won't care that your jacket is 700g and not 450g.

For reference, I have a jacket that is stuffed with just under 200g of 800 loft down and in Melbourne it's always warm enough to wear just over a t-shirt. In the mountains, I wear it with other good layers and stay warm while camping in snow in down to -10. If you want to get even dorkier with it, someone else made this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G4V2EIQ5mWXdPqXsfAVu…

Hope you have a nice time in NZ.

@MotfRozmotf: Thanks for the reply. Weight not a consideration really except for luggage allowances i guess. I'm a big unit and not going to be trekking. I've just got a low tolerance for cold weather. Can't stand it. Uses when i get back will be just standing around watching kids sport and whatnot.

Appeeciate the spreadsheet. Nerds can be pretty helpful sometimes! Lol.. Cheers.

$303.20 for the blue version with code at David Jones: https://www.davidjones.com/product/the-north-face-mens-1996-…

  • Go pay full price for a Canada Goose if you want to blow too much money to identify with a logo. Another brand that has bugged out from the niche of far flung rugged wear to the dumb streets of brand fashion. I'll just stick to my Rab.

Patagonia has an outlet shop on Smith St in Fitzroy. They sometimes have decent deals there. Worth a wander in if you are in the area.
