  • Is this overkill with PS5/Xbox ?

    • +2

If it is true cat7, then yes it's overkill….but also, at the price it doesn't really matter, it will do the job.

FYI, it's likely not true cat7, it's likely only going to get cat5e/Cat6 speeds, which is perfectly fine for a latest gen console

      • +1

        True Cat 7 uses a GG45 connector rather than a RJ45

      • It's already a thing

When is the immortal cat 9 going to be available?

      • meow

        • I'm still on cat 5e

    • +4

Absolutely. A Cat7 cable supports 10Gbps networking. PS5/Xbox support a maximum of 1Gbps. A Cat5e cable should be more than sufficient for your use case. In saying that, this cable is $8. A similar Cat 5e cable on Amazon is $7. Up to you whether you would like to spend an extra dollar on better shielding, potentially less interference.

  • +9

Just a heads-up for anyone who isn't aware: it's best to avoid using Cat 7 cables unless your devices are properly grounded. Cat 7 cables have shielding that can cause grounding issues or even introduce electrical interference if not connected correctly, which can lead to unstable network performance.

    • I have 15M or 30M flat cable from one end of the house to the other end, so far no problem.

      • +1

What does that have to do with what exloong said?

        • -1

which can lead to unstable network performance.

          This

    • How about CAT 8 cables? Same issues?

    • You could always remove it if you want a cheap flat cable.

Flat cables sometimes fall apart and have weaker shielding but 8 bucks…

any recommendations for the short tiny patch cables for racks?

$7 at MSY if you have a store near you.

The mis information in this thread is wild.

Couldn't agree more! its cable not building a harbour bridge here.

    meow :3

  • I bought this one but 10m last year, it's flat and neat, easily glues it on the wall with tapes

  • CAT-amongst the pigeons

  • Could just be me, but purchased the 20m cable a few days ago for a 10gbps connection. Was only reaching 90mbps. Swapped to a cat 6a from another company and now reaching full speed. I would personally recommend staying away from these and finding a cat6a locally if you need the speeds.

  • +2

Just letting you know that the Cat7 standard is NOT recognised by the TIA (telecom) or the EIA (electronics industry), so you’re most likely getting ripped off with these cables.
Best to buy a Cat6A cable, or even Cat8 (which IS recognised by both organisations) if you need faster speeds.

  • +1

High-speed cables require the 8 cores to be deliberately spaced to manage the crosstalk effectively at such high bandwidths. However, this is less obvious at lower lengths so these companies can get away with bullshittery that the average consumer won't notice.

Buy this because it's flat, not because it's 'Cat 7'. Keep your expectations at Temu levels of quality.
