  • Now if only they would do a similar deal on the WD Elements 2tb Play!

JB HiFi has it for $175 which is a very good deal compared to other stores, but reckon it will get cheaper given WD online store Australia has (at least last time I checked) a promo on the 3tb for $199 which is not much more…so thinking the smaller size versions will drop in price quite a bit shortly. Don't really need 3tb.

    • I bought one (2TB) for $139 at JB Hifi Chadstone just before Christmas and there were atleast 20 left. But its been over 3 weeks now so i doubt there would still be any left or if it'll still be on sale but you could always give them a call to find out if you're from Victoria =)

  • Does anybody know what's the RPM of these drives? Looking for a 500GB 7200RPM drive at the moment.

    • +1

I don't think 7200rpm would be any better than 5400rpm over USB.

If you're thinking of cracking it open for an internal drive don't bother, the drive inside has no sata connecter.

      • +2

Just speculating, but maybe over USB 3.0 it would.

      • Really? No SATA connector? Well that rules that out then.

        • what is Sata connector for?

    • +3

Desktop drive. This is a good deal because it's the portable version.

      • -2

hum, I think it uses for both laptop and desktop.

there is always one in every hard drive deal…

  • jbhifi had a deal for 1tb at $64. wasnt that one much better? (but expired already)

Office works has a seagate 1TB USB 3.0 for $89
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

    • Do you know if thats a regular sata drive inside ?

      • Hitachi is better. I got one 1TB Touro USB 3 for $79. Not as good as JB hifi deal I didn't bother posting it as people only look @ Price $64.

But its a much better drive than WD or Seagate, even though Hitachi is owned by WD now they still have a difference

With good OzBargain habits now people have learnt only to look at the price and just ignore the details of it being desktop or portable ;)

  • no way from 89 to 48???

oh i thought it was the passport essential..

  • Does anyone know whether the hard drive can be removed from the enclosure and swapped into a ps3

    • No, WD portable drives have the USB interface wired directly into the hard drive.

  • are there differences in speeds between USB 3.0 HDDs? Similar to SSDs and Flash drives????

    • The transfer interface won't make up for a slow mechanical 5400rpm drive but it will still be faster than a USB 2 drive :)

    Bought from Harvey Norman.

    Cheers.

portable 500gb hdd's have been around the 49 mark since boxing day

    • Not true, prices have gone back up. I know cos ive been looking for one. Officeworks and JB HIFI they are all around the $70-$80 mark.

      • Sorry, it is true, I bought this exact deal from The Good Guys Warners Bay, Newcastle on 30/12/12. They had sold out at that point in time and had to order one in for me. Arrived on 8/ 01/ 13. Used a $25 gift card so only cost me $23! So far so good!! Didn't realise it was such a bargain.

  • This is a pretty good deal. I just bought a 500GB USB3 HDD yesterday for $59

  • will JB or OW pricematch this?
