Why would one?! This is for humans

        read about zinc pyrithione

      • +1

I think he forgot to add an "even" between "wouldn't" and "use"?

        • Yeah my bad

          • +2

@shap08: But what's your point here? Are you a dermatologist? What about Zinc pyrithione? Reading about that tells me its anti fungal. Can you tell us why that's bad?

            • -4

@NoHorny: ELI5: Zinc pyrithione works well as an anti fungal, but it’s not good for the environment and scientists aren’t sure it’s safe for long term use.

              • +6

@shap08: Ahh ok, you deserved those negs. Uses ELI5 but doesn't even provide source or relevant info. You're just one of those "know it all" type because you think you've the knowledge/access of the internet.

                • +1

@NoHorny: Head and shoulders uses Piroctone Olamine now. They don't use Zinc pyrithione anymore after the EU banned it. At consumer concentrations it is not toxic, but it has potential to be toxic. Safer alternatives exist so it was banned.

                  • @Undercut 2241: Looks like you edited your comment just before my response. So here's my edit.

                    Thanks for the explanation.

I agree, head and shoulders sucks for dandruff control. Use Ketoconazole instead. Downvoters are because you are giving no explanation.

Microscopic fungus/yeast called Malassezia globosa naturally grow in your scalp, feed on oils and poop out oleic acid. If you're of the 50% of the population that is sensitive to oleic acid, your body triggers an inflammatory response and rapidly increases the speed at which it renews skin cells. This is an attempt to "shed" the irritant and results in the dandruff.

Head and shoulders suppresses the yeast and controls its population however this is only temporary. Once you stop, your dandruff will return. Ketoconazole kills the yeast. If head and shoulders was like mowing the lawn to keep the fungus under control, ketoconazole is like using a specific herbicide that destroys the weed's root system.

Even though ketoconazole is very effective at clearing the scalp of the fungus, it doesn't grant you permanent immunity. As said before, Malassezia globosa is a natural part of your scalp's microbiome and will eventually repopulate. However, because ketoconazole is so effective at knocking back the fungal population, the time it takes for your dandruff to return after stopping treatment is often much longer than with other shampoos.

The actives found in normal dandruff shampoos like Piroctone Olamine, Pyrithione Zinc, Selenium Sulfide are nowhere near as effective as Ketoconazole.

You can even combine both but I wouldn't recommend it, long term head and shoulders use is very drying on the hair and thus may cause hair loss. Give ketoconazole a go. Read the instructions on the back.

"Apply a small amount of treatment to wet hair and scalp, work into a lather and leave in contact for 3-5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Do this twice weekly."

Then you can drop to once every week or so for maintenance once your dandruff has cleared. If you also get dandruff on the eyebrows you can use some there for a few seconds then wash off.

Anecdotally, I was using head and shoulders for half a year, I had hair loss a few months in due to the drying effect. The dandruff suppression was very poor once you see how good it truly can get with ketoconazole. If feels okay when you're using it because you don't know what truly no dandruff feels like. Then I went to a doctor who recommended ketoconazole. Fixed in 2 weeks. Now I can use normal shampoos and top up with nizoral shampoo (ketoconazole) every two weeks maybe.

Give it a go, I truly mean it.

Nizoral, the biggest brand for this, has 1% and 2% versions in large and small. I'd recommend just getting the large 2% one unless you have very mild dandruff but honestly you can just use the 2% version less often and the bottle would last longer for the same effect.

I used Nizoral as directed for 5 years, starting with 1% and then moving onto 2% but it never got rid of my dandruff - would clear it for 2 days then I'd need another treatment.

Then I started using head and shoulders 2-in-1 daily in 2023, after two weeks it completely cleared my dandruff and I haven't had any since. I am thinking about switching to Moo goo anti-dandruff shampoo though as I prefer Aussie brands, will have to trial and see how it goes.

        • +1

I use moo goo on the kids, its not bad.

I just went down to chemist warehouse and got some. The 1% was on the shelf but for the 2% you have to go the pharmacy counter. Got the 2% and asked the pharmacist about it, she said it works much better than head & shoulders and she normally recommends people just start with the 2% rather than using the 1%.

She told me to use it twice a week and in between use a regular shampoo/conditioner. Advised to buy ones that are soap free with no scent or other additives, something like QV. I found an off brand QV looking clone on the bottom shelf so bought the shampoo & conditioner from that brand.

Will see how I go next week using it, hopefully makes a difference as my dandruff has become rather painful lately.

        • Good luck!

          • @Undercut 2241: Results are pretty good so far, thanks for your recommendation.

            • @Agret: No worries, glad it helped you. Once it's under control consider experimenting with shampoo/conditioner frequency as well if you're used to shampooing everyday. Based on how my scalp feels, some days I'd use conditioner only, or skip washing my hair.
