Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

should i buy one as a backup this prices feel too good lol

    • +21

Yes then run both in SLI

    • +16

I think it would be pointless since CPUs are generally very reliable. You would be better off putting that money towards an upgrade, IMO.

      • +7

Never in my life, I've had a burnt CPU. Even when my motherboard, graphics card and all the other connected cards got damaged by lightning once the CPU survived.

I've heard rare cases of some pci lanes going bad but it's rare. Better to put your money elsewhere.

    • +4

      Don't! It's the OzB talking!

      • +2

        You're right guys you're right.

I already have the 5500 that'll become a spare anyway.

Can't believe I paid like $300 for a 5700x in my main build though!

Snagged one of the szcpu 5700x ones already, which is to go into that system with the 5500. I don't need another!

        • +1

Just wait until it's like $249 or something for an AM5 7800X3D

          • +2

@marshmall0w2: Yeah that'd be pretty crazy actually if that's ever a thing.

            $120 for a 32gb kit of ddr5?
            $180 for an am5 mobo?

And that would make a nice build

            • +1

@AeymothSky: Well if you browse OzB long enough the 7800X3D has been at almost just $300 with coupons and cashback lol. Just a bit more.

              • +2

@marshmall0w2: Oh wow really, yeah I haven't been paying any attention at all to am5 since I just know I'd need to invest into a full brand new build basically for it.

Might look into seeing what $1k could get me in another year or something or atleast keep track of the market every few months!

Best thing for me to do that i keep telling myself is to hold onto what I have now until there's a big leap in performance in what I can get compared to the stuff i have now

  • +1

Wow super cheap upgrade if you wanna stay on the AM4 platform. Wonder how low it'll go 👀

    • +2

Are 5700x still being manufactured ?

      • +1

I'd love to build a cheap budget itx mobo case build with one of these lol but don't know how much that'd be

        • +2

Chinese B450i boards are around $60 from what I remember. Plenty of other cheap ITX parts you can buy from AliExpress too.

          • +1

@maimai: Yeah that's kinda what I'm thinking of.

I am a bit worried about the support on these motherboards though regarding their bios etc.

            • +1

@AeymothSky: Doesn't really matter since AM4 is a dead platform. I've heard good things about Jginyue's B3/4/550 ITX although the BIOS usually isn't that good.

              • +2

                @maimai: I guess so,

Any reason i should try get b550 over b450 besides the bigger number? Something to do with pcie 4.0 maybe?

                • +2

@AeymothSky: Mainly PCIe 4.0, but I've heard the B350 and B450 Jginyue have better VRM thermals than the B550.

                  • +1

@maimai: will look into those at another time, thanks for the suggestions!

  • +1

Set to USD as currency but seeing $109 USD excluding GST… shipping to NZ though not AUS—am I missing something?

    • +1

It could be because you're in NZ. What you see is regional and doesn't always include all countries.

  • +2

Would love to upgrade the desktop to a 12 core (from 3700x) but at this price I think it's time to upgrade even and 8 cores and repurpose the zen2 chip.

  • +3

anyone on anything under a ryzen 3600
    now is your chance!

about the cheapest pc upgrade you can get these days

    • +2

Haha what if youre on a 3600?

      • +1

Yeah, that's me. Upgraded my graphics but not my mono or CPU so they are way out sync. Think I just need to suck it up and get a new mobo CPU etc.

      • +4

Stay with the 3600 and save cash for a future full platform change imo. Unless you can get a 5700x3d for cheap. Nothing gonna give you massive gains.

        • Yeah I’m going to upgrade my 3600 to a 5700x3D on my system with a 3070ti.

Then in the next 12 months give that system to my kids and buy a whole new system that’s all current gen.

        • Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Missed out on the 5700x3D cheapo deals from last year.

      • Well if you're not upgrading then that makes me feel better about my 3700x.

        • That makes me feel better that I'm about to upgrade to a 3700X (from a i5-4440).

      • +1

Upgrading my 3600 to 5700x3d for around $140 last year from AliExpress was probably my smartest OzBargain move.

    • +1

I still dunno if its worth it. With my 6800XT and trying for the highest settings I can in whatever single player games I play I don't think it would make a difference.

Maybe if I was playing online and using minimum settings but for me is it just money down the drain?

This video for example shows a 3070 is the real bottleneck at high graphics…

    • What about a 2400g with no GPU? Is there anyway around having to buy a GPU?

  • Very out of touch with the CPU market. Looking to upgrade my almost 15 year old desktop, are there any problems with going AM4 over AM5?

    • +5

Am4 almost a decade old. Great value now but no real upgrade path in future. Good for a budget build

      • +1

almost a decade old and can probs last u another decade

      • +1

Great thanks, I'm probably in a position where I'm happy to splash out a bit more with the idea that I can upgrade in the future so think will go AM5

    • +2

Yeah, 5000 is the last generation of that socket - these are an upgrade option for people with existing AM4 platforms. I would not recommend it to someone starting from scratch (although if budget is really tight, they are good value).

7000 series AM5 is a good middle ground (ie. 7600 and B550 board). Your platform still has some upgrade path down the track (if you want), and the 5000-7000 leap was much bigger than the 7000-9000 leap.

    • Put simply it's a CPU that will be a good value buy that's got more than enough power to last at least the next 4-5 years of heavy computing before any thought should be put into an upgrade

  • +1

Grabbed one to upgrade my 2700X which is feeling a bit sluggish atm. Seems to be a decent enough upgrade on paper for the price.

    • I almost got one to replace my 5 year old 3300x, until I looked up the benchmarks, and… it's not even 25% faster than my 3300x in games. Despite having literally double the cores/threads.

Man I was lucky to get a 3300x back in 2020. They sold out instantly, never came back into stock, and are still in the same rough ballpark as the very best and latest CPUs. The 9800x3d is only around twice as fast on average, at least in actual game performance. Less in some games.

      • Do you mean 25% more frames? That's 1 or 2 generations of GPU improvements

Think about how much you would need to spend on a GPU to increase performance by 25%

        • I'm not spending money to upgrade a GPU that gives me less than 25% more FPS, either.

Outside a few edge cases, that's - quite literally - not going to be noticeable without an FPS counter on the screen.

Imagine how disappointing such a minimal upgrade would actually be: you research, spend a bunch of money, open up the case, sell the old one, fiddle with drivers, etc…

…and then when you actually play a game, instead of being blown away by a big satisfying improvement, or even just a significant-but-modest one, there's just… no noticeable difference in most games?

          You'd feel pretty stupid.

          • +1

@ItsMeAgro: I agree there's been diminishing returns of my pc gaminy hobby / life going from laptop with igpu i3 2nd gen to a pentium pc with gt 630m to

            1080p 60hz 1050 ti to

What i have now which is 240hz alienware 24in monitor or something with rx 6700xt 5700x level gaming.

It's annoying that the frames drop more and more where i rarely reach that 240 hertz.

      • +1

Depends on the game, I've seen pretty big differences when it comes to esports titles like CS2 (~150 fps vs 400+, 3600 vs 5600)

    • +2

Anyone on, 2xxx or 1xxx will benefit greatly. My 2600 to 5600x was a massive upgrade. My fps jump and especially minimums was surprisingly big. Like 20-30+% easily and I'm at 1440p.

Just make sure you upgrade your bios before taking out the old cpu! Even if it's already compatible you may as well update to latest for best stability/performance etc

      • Thanks for the reminder. I think my BIOS is recent but will need to check - and great to hear the upgrade was worth it.

  • Is AliExpress legit? I don't understand how they can be soo much cheaper? I'm tempted but would prefer to buy local, but now thinking If you were a local supplier you'd just buy these and resell.

    • +3

Stacks of people here (myself included) have bought AMD CPUs from Aliexpress - totally legit. I can't speak for this exact seller, but no red flags. My 5700X3D did arrive in just the plastic casing with a bubblewrap pouch - no retail box. I daresay they've bought trays at OEM system pricing.

    • +1

They are usually CPUs from AMD/Intel that were intended for OEM systems (prebuilts) that were sold individually instead. Usually don't come with a cooler and the warranty will only be as much as you can get from the seller.

    • Legit for this seller imo based on reviews and sales etc, you'll probably get the CPU if you order it.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut if a pin is broken or something then you better start praying.

  • +1

Any point in switching from a 5600x at this price point?

  • +1

    I have a 5600 (not 5600x) worth the upgrade?

  • I have a 3700x on a asus crosshair iv being used as a htpc. If my board was a mini itx I would make this a proxmox server

I just dont trust ali china express

    • I have the same CPU. You reckon this is too juicy of an upgrade to pass up for a full size desktop?

  • +1

    Any deals on the 5700X3D/5800X3D?

    • Nah. Supply ran dry on those ages ago so anything left is charged at a premium.

    • Out of stock for a long time.

Those of us who already have a decent AM4 CPU (3600 or better) will be stuck waiting until everyone else upgrades, for those to come down in price.

    • +1

Yeah quick look around going price for a 5800X3D is about $550-600 for which the same cost you can get a new 9700X

  • Any recommendations for a cheap mATX mobo for gaming (RTX 2070 if that gives a picture)?

  • Will this work with the stock cooler if upgrading from a 2600?

    • Should be fine. Similar thermals and power specs.

    • +2

Feedback previously is that the Wraith Stealth won't be enough and it'll throttle. The $29 Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE variants are good.

  • I decided to take the plunge, upgrading from a 2200G. Now I'll have to source a second hand video card to give me some graphics (I'm not planning on playing new release games).

    • +1

I've seen a few 1070s for around $100, pretty decent option if your PSU can handle it.

  • Price gone back up

  • This is my first time buying from aliexpress.

Why is it that I authorised a payment of $124 but now I'm being charged $175?

    • Just cancel the order and wait for the next deal. Likely easier than trying to get a partial refund.
It isnt just an aliexpress issue though as it has happened with other retailers. Not sure of the reason, maybe a price change during checkout or something.

  • Would this be a good upgrade from a Ryzen 5 5600?
I’m running it with an RTX 3070 and don’t want to spend too much.

  • just bought, upgrading from a 3500x

  • I went 5800X3D a little while back. I think that's the highest you can go on AM4. I think this is the third CPU on this motherboard. Now thinking of what to do about my RX 6700XT GPU. I might jump back to nVidia maybe. I've lost count of the graphics cards this computer of Thesus has had - perhaps 10? I've had cards of both religions.
