  • This or the s24?

It comes with 7 years software + security updates. Good camera and battery life. Pretty compelling factors packaged in a mid-range phone.

      • +3

Yes, well apart from giving us excellent software and security updates, a good camera and battery life, what has google ever done for us?

        • +1

          Gave you google.com

        • +3

They've tracked all your data, killed off a bunch of services, and increased the prices of their products to seem premium so they can go toe to toe with Apple. Don't be ungrateful.

        • Has Gemini better than chatgpt

        • Other than Google.com, Google maps, google photos, Gmail and many more. And yes, the Android OS which free for the world to use

          • +2

@GeneralKeen: AOSP is free. The Android you know absolutely isn't and comes with a LOT of strings attached.

            • @incipient: If you have time in your hands sure, when I was younger back Android 2.x hey days I played with a lot of ROMs. Root and what not, and image my android phones for backup. The one with AOSP or whatever rom is not something you want to use as daily driver, you wouldn't be able to use NFC or bank apps. Also lots of security issues not knowing what happens to the data on your phone with custom ROMs and OSes. So its for tinkering and play around with

Started with HTC Desire phones that was. Funny HTC sold their R&D to Google

        • Why dont you google it?

      • +2

Will anyone use this or any phones fore 7 years? Or let me put it the other way, will a phone survive for 7 years, specially battery?

        • +2

It's Google so they'll just kill it when they're bored. Whether or not they've committed to however many updates.

        • Google will service your phone just pay battery replacement cost or perhaps they will send you a refurbished one who knows. Would be cheaper to get a new one

          • @neonlight: Only during the warranty period - not for the 7 years period.

            • @OZBsince2018: Out of warranty you just need to pay more. Same as Apple

It's only a sales pitch after all you not gonna keep the same phone for 7 years

              • @neonlight: Why would you spend on a 3-4 years hardware which will be outdated by then. So for most, this 7 years updates thing is more of a gimmick, as usually no phone would last anywhere beyond 3 years. May last but won’t meet OZB’s high standards 😀

                • +3

@OZBsince2018: For me I'm still using LG v50 so I have defied this ozbargain standards. Since 2019. its DAC beats all smartphones no matter latest iPhone or androids none of them got the audio quality it has.

They no longer make it and no one likes headphones jack any more

                  • @neonlight: Using a phone just for audio is a unique thing. So you definitely have a unique use case 👍🏻

                  • +1

@neonlight: How is the battery holding up? My v40 needs charging 3-4 times a day with light usage. 6gb ram & snapdragon 845 chugging along nicely.
It's a nice music player with custom dac.
Wish lg comes back to making smartphones again.

                    • @milanoxpress: Not very good I opened my one up and changed the battery myself its been good since. Battery was on the way out on the 5th year, last year needed to charge twice a day.

                • @OZBsince2018:

So for most, this 7 years updates thing is more of a gimmick

I would gladly use my Pixel 5 today if it didn't break (and got replaced with a 7a), so it may not be a gimmick if the hardware is good enough (Pixel 5 had 8GB of RAM, same as 9a, and a great camera). I don't play games on my phone, though.

          • @neonlight: Where do they do this? I've never seen a Google store or battery replacement location before.

            • @vicerum: You just do it by post. Handy to keep a backup phone while you wait. But have not claimed battery replacement outside of warranty. Few years ago I did it pixel 5 whilist within two years. The process would be the same if you want to service any google phones, they likely charge you more or just give you a store credit telling you cannot repair.

Rumour suggested since pixel 8 they are prepared more parts to service but who knows

Sometimes you get lucky like pixel 7 people got refunded for defect I was lol

      • The RAM in 5 years time will be the main complaint.
12gb will make it a more likelt 7yr phone

        • 12gb will make it a more likelt 7yr phone

          It's 8GB.

          • @bio: That's point….
They wanted this because it promises 7years of updates.

But likely by 5th year it will feel old because it only has 8gb.
To be better future proof and basing thwir purchase on 7yra of updates. Looking for a 12 gb phone will be better choice

      • They both have those.
S24 (even Exynos) is going to be faster and more compact for roughly the same screen size.
Pixel 9a should have slightly better battery life due to the bigger capacity, however the Pixel 9a has a weaker modem, which can cancel out the battery gains depending on your usage.

Re cameras, the S24 will handle distance much better due to the telephoto, but the 9a generally has better image processing.

The other main factor is the OS. Pixel is going to get updates sooner and has less bloat, but the latest iteration of One UI on the S24 is pretty flexible and you can hide or disable most of the Samsung fluff. If you're in an existing ecosystem, you may prefer to stick with what you know.

    • I recently upgraded my S20FE to the Pixel 9a. Only downside I've experienced so far is the sound quality isn't as good as my old phone via the speakers. I tend to use headphones more often, so it's not that much of a negative for me. Otherwise I've been pretty happy with it so far, quite snappy to use and battery life has been great so far.

    $887 for the 256gb model.

  • +1

Really compelling. Been with samsung for last 8 years after nexus line was discontinued.
Anyone missed samsung features when switching to pixel?

    • Not unless youre married to a particular samsung service. Theres some real Dex heads and a few handy apps. But I like pixel phones for being a cleaner installation as I use about 10% of any given phones potential.

      • Dex for windows lost support with UI 7, it was great

    • +1

I really missed the double tap Home Screen to lock, missed goodlock customisation for the keyboard, changing fonts and lock screen customisation.

Edit - using goodlock to change “hold power button to turn on flash light” instead of assistant

    • Nope, converted to a pixel 6 pro about 3 years ago and wish I had done it sooner

    • If you have a Samsung watch you might lose a bit of functionality like ECG and blood pressure monitor but yeah there's workarounds and ports for them

    • Switched a long ago never looked back. Samsung S7 edge was my last phone everything after that is subpar, ads bloatware even with One UI still feels bloated. Poor customer service with Samsung always kept me away.

I went thru HTC, Nexus, Oneplus, Samsung, Pixel never looking back to Samsung ever. In between also had iPhone til X

    • +2

Yes. In more ways than one actually. I've been Samsung>Pixel>OnePlus(before the coloros)>Samsung across a few years, with iPhones before that and in between too.

Dex is just amazing, something I genuinely can't live without. No need for laptops for presentations, just bring a cable.

      Endless customizations with good luck.

The multi window is just better. PIP video too.

Dual audio, connecting to two earbuds while watching the same show on flights is kinda cool.

S-pen is dead useful for some types of work. I use it for quick and easy markups on graphics that need changing, it's just super convenient

$717 when using price beat at The Good Guys.

  • +1

Top end Nexus 6P for $744 a decade ago compared to this watered down budget version now. Sad face.

    • +3

Times change and inflation. Now it's double the price for top end, minimum.

      • This concept mostly applies to Australia. Where tech costs more meanwhile NBN everything goes up.

However it's true that Aus dollar 10years ago probably same value at rate of 1.5-1.8 now

  • 8gb ram for next 7 year updates 🤔

    • +1

promising updates and promising performance are very different

  • +4

    wysi :(

Google store will price match this, handy if you have credit to use up

  • Seems like Google Store hasn't announced their EOFY sale yet. I hope they will have one soon.

  • +1

Great phone for degoogling and running private and secure GrapheneOS instead. Hit me up if you want someone to do that for you and install a set of private/secure apps most people will use (maps, email, podcasts, notepad etc.) You can DIY if you're tech savvy and prepared to research the ins and outs.

    • +1

That's exactly what I wanted it for, their web installer is so simple

      • Yes it is most of the time. Once installed there is much to learn about how best to set things up and operate them, there's more ways than one to do most things.
