Use code JUNE20 for 20% off. Has to be one of the cheapest thermal imagers around.

Sensor resolution is 192 x 192 and the display is 2.8" and 240 x 240.

To save a few extra bucks you could also try the best offer option.

The only thing that I would be a bit wary about is that it has an inbuilt battery. When it eventually fails it would be a job to replace. Most of these types of imagers have inbuilt batteries however.

They also have the type that plugs into your phone if you want to avoid the future battery issue. Another upside of these is the much larger display. Downside maybe is they are not so 'grab ang go' if you use one frequently. Code works on them as well. Check the link below.

Code works on all their other thermal imagers. https://www.ebay.com.au/str/mileseeyofficialstore/Thermal-Im…

    DIY termite inspections

    • What do you see with this type of camera?

      • +2

Termite nests are warm and humid. They would show as a "hot spot" on an otherwise same temperature wall

      • +1

You can see cold drafts coming into your home through tiny gaps in your window frames etc to help with deciding where requires sealing and insulation. They are hit and miss with trying to identify termite tunnels/trails.

    • LOL. First read that as thermite!

      • I don't think you would need a thermal camera to identify thermite when it gets "hot". :D

  • +16

If you only need one of these for single tasks, worth checking your local library/council as many offer these for loan (though often with a bit of a wait)

    • +2

The real deal in the comments.

We've got a new library opening close to us shortly, excited to see if they've got stuff like this

    • +3

Do any councils in Brisbane/Logan/Ipswich or adjacent areas have these? I can't seem to find any info

      • +3

Search "home energy audit kit" and your local council, might find something.

      • I can't seem to find any info

        Had same question.
        Google says…
"Yes, Brisbane libraries offer home energy audit kits for residents to borrow. These kits, which are part of the Myli Library of Things program, allow residents to assess and improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Residents must have a valid Myli Library of Things adult membership to borrow the kit, which is available for a two-week loan period."

Myli Library of Things link below

        • I may be wrong but it looks like Myli is a Victorian thing? I can't find any libraries on their site outside of VIC

          • @Boioioioi: Originally only Gippsland Vic, seems now a national scheme.
Will ask at a Brisbane library.

            • @INFIDEL: Tell me how you go I am curious

              • @Boioioioi: Ok. So am I😉
Myli – My Community Library is a not for profit organisation. Myli was previously known as West Gippsland Libraries

              • @Boioioioi: Popped in to Brisbane library / BCC customer centre (on way to Oporto for FREE chicken).

                GOOGLE LIED!
                Not available in Brisbane Libraries

                • @INFIDEL: Ah that is a shame! Yes the Google AI is often wrong

                  • @Boioioioi: BCC guy was very interested, so did a thorough search - with no luck. He wants to use a thermal camera!

    • +1

It's Over 12 month wait usually. I borrowed one and it was kind of fun to use but nothing that unexpected. Did find where a hollow wall cavity above a cupboard was missing insulation but nothing else really

    • Huge range of kits to borrow:
      https://www.myli.org.au/resource-category/library-of-things/
Book through your nearest library offering them.

(Already have & use everything in kit, except Thermal Imaging Camera)

Sign up, place a HOLD to borrow for 2 weeks

      • Seems only available in.Vic!

Good to point at your partner and show them they're hot stuff

    • +7

and point at the mirror to remind yourself

    • +2

They pair well with studfinders if you can make a beeping sound when holding it to your own body.
Don't forget to say 'oh I found a stud'

      • +3

The correct thing to say is "I better test it before using it", then place it on yourself and say "yep it works"

        • +1

Oh you must be in the advanced training, we haven't learnt such techniques yet.

          • +1

@cook99: It ain't much, but it's honest work

  • +1

how good are these at detecting leaks behind walls?

    • +1

Moisture meter could work for you too and is cheaper (I used the Klein tools one to monitor a current water ingress issue starting from the brisbane cyclone)

    • If there is a difference in temperature it will pick it up but that's a big if. It will definitely find gaps in insulation and around doors/windows. Could also find termite damage.

  • +7

    "this bathroom is non compliant"

    • +4

‘Look good from far but far from good’

      • +4

"look at this guys. Just look. At. This. Unbelievable"

        Love his videos

  • The product listing suggests res 192x192 but the description indicates 240x240, which is a significant increase. Know which is which?

    • +1

Just went to their website and 192 x 192 is the sensor resolution and the display is 2.8" and 240 x 240.

  • Any good for circuit boards to identify faults? Or would this need higher resolution?

  • +1

This YouTube 'review' could be useful for some https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLDEb41Zcf0

  • Good timing.
I was considering the TOPDON TC001.
Mainly using for assisting identifying gaps and draughts around the house.

Would love to hear any feedback/guidance for this type of work

    • +1

I have the Topdon TC001. It works really well, Will do what you want perfectly. I can easily see the gaps in the wall and ceiling insulation. It is very sensitive, eg; if you just momentarily touch a wall, it will show that.

Besides the usual uses like gaps in insulation, draughts, electrical hotspots etc, it will even pick out ceiling joists and wall studs.

You can even see stuff like cold or hot water running through your sink drains. Have not used it for pest inspection though, as the house I currently live in is relatively new and has no signs of anything.

      • +1

I've got the USB milesey and I used it to install and find gaps in insulation. You can see the ceiling joists and all the insulation + gaps.

I've got brick walls and I haven't been successful in using it to detect draughts, I can see hot water pipe but not electricity cables in the brick

        • Good point, I completely forgot to mention my place is brick veneer and I have not tried looking for anything on the brick side.

      • Thanks.
That's exactly what I was looking for so sounds like it would fit the bill.

Ill need to do a specs comparison between the milesseey usbC one also available for about 2/3 of the price of the Topdon

        • I do know they have the same resolution sensor so would expect it to be similar. Obviously the app will be a bit different.

I run a business renting out Thermal Cameras of all types.

The major disadvantage of some of these very basic handheld units is they lack the ability to manually control/set the temperature range. Essentially they’re like a point & shoot camera on full auto.

For some kind of detections, like making comparison measurements from room to room, or trying to detect very small differences in temperature, in those cases it’s often helpful to be able to manually set the temperature range. The other cheap units that attach to your phone are usually a similar kind of price, but usually offer more precise control of settings through their apps.

The low resolution is actually rarely the major issue. However, for things like electronics diagnosis, the lack of ability to close focus (macro) can make it difficult to precisely nail down faults.

    • Very useful info, thanks, Not that I have the feature yet, other than playing with the settings, can confirm the Topdon TC001 phone plug in imager has temperature range control.

      • Damn, not cheap!

      • Meant 'used the feature yet.'

    • I have the 256 usb c unit which i use for circuit board fault finding. Whilst it has been useful, I would like a macro attachment for more precise analysis. Any ideas where to find one?

      • +1

You can DIY with 3d printing and buying a macro thermal camera lens on ebay — even one for another brand. Otherwise, there are models like the Infiray P2 Pro that come with magnetic macro attachments.

    • do you have a recommendation for the cheapest unit that can do the precise settings you mention?

      • Almost any phone-attached thermal camera will allow you to set the temperature ranges as I described. For handheld units, most of the sub-$500 ones are lacking this option.

Thanks. This will be great to "see" where the snakes are hibernating in our ceiling. They tend to curl up under the insulation around August each year.

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/82921/115733/nvr_fores…

    • That widened my eyes:)

    • +1

      snakes are hibernating

Are you sure this will work? Snakes, being reptiles, are cold-blooded. Their metabolism will generate a little heat, but hibernation is "a state of reduced metabolic activity", so the heat generated will be even lower.

      • +1

When we had building and pest inspection, the dude using the gun could see where the snakes was. Also, I'm going to use it for DIY termite inspection. I guess the relink camera can keep an eye on the snake's activity.

        • Thanks for the reply, I'm impressed it is possible!

          • +1

@Russ: When they did the pest inspection, there were two guys that came out. The guy that went into the ceiling space came down and said there was a python in the ceiling of the back room. The other guy with the thermal gun went back to that room and pointed at the spot he described, and confirmed that's where it was. I thought I'd add a bit more context. ☺️

Grabbed the plug in USB-C TR256i instead of the handheld - https://ebay.us/m/2bzqqO. Seems to get decent reviews on Amazon on elsewhere. $198 after JUNE20 coupon + 5% voucher. Have previously used a library borrowed USB camera for fixing drafts and gaps in floor but having one on hand for insulation, ducting, electrics, etc. at this price make energy nerd me happy.

    • Does it have temp lock?

    • I was looking between between this one and the TP2 plus. I like that the TP2 plus merges visible and IR, but it is not cable connected (uses wifi and so will need a battery/charging).
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/157006801932

After looking into it a bit further, it seems a bit clunky, there are parallax errors in the fused image, and there are issues with the app and updates.
      review of TP2 plus
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/ROVYXQ3XG001P

Personally, if I decide to get one of these to use with my phone, I would probably go with the USB-C one.

    • +1

There is a good review of the TR256i on amazon:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/customer-reviews/R12SWBPEVKABOL

    • +1

Just be aware you will most likely have to remove your phone case for this to connect and work properly. I know I have to do this with the Topdon TC001. The stem on the USB C plug is slightly too short for the camera to plug in with all but the thinnest cases.

      • Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully my case will be ok (quite thin aramid fibre)

    • +1

These with phone compatibility are indeed better choices because of the ability to tweak more parameters.
I went with TP2 plus because TR256i is ONLY compatible with Android phones, TP2 supports both IOS and Android.

  • I am about to grab a Goyojo GW256 as image overlay (fusion)matters to me.

  • Thanks team. Got the TR256.
