Router Recommendations for HFC nbn

Hi, looking forward to upgrade the router from 4 years old nf18mesh.
The router is reaching its limit/age by frequent dropouts, buffering, etc.

I WFH, and have 3 people using wifi, multiple devices simultaneously using- smart TV, 2 macbooks, ipad, 3 smart phones, 4 wifi cameras, and 5 smart plugs/sensors (more likely to be added soon).

The nbn wall plate is in middle of house, median suburban house of 200sqm on 650sqm plot. Current one is doing fine so wouldn’t need need mesh system?
Also considering moving the wall plate to front of house(where office is, but not sure about the cost).

Wifi 6 would be enough i guess. Can claim it in tax, willing to spend around $150.

Not sure if you saw, but best value for money Wifi 6 router today would be the Flint 2. It's a bit over your budget, you'd need to stretch to $200. Put a 3xcamels alert on it and see how you go before EOFY. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/903819

I'd either go the Flint2 OR the Asus RT-AX86U Pro

Asus RT-AX86U Pro is legit an extremely good router. Have two myself (one as the main and a second for a mesh node) and they are rock solid.

    • +1 for Flint 2

    • Thanks.

    • Says it support adblock. Do you know if there is any router where we can install pihole?

  • Maybe jump on the pre-order for Flint 3? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/909834

A question to all of the people recommending the Flint devices, I've consistently heard feedback that the firmware/OS on their routers are quite buggy and that they essentially use their customers as alpha/beta testers for their firmware. Do you find that that is representative of your experiences with them or not?

    • Got the Flint2 when it was first released. Initial firmware versions were buggy, but to their credit they released fixes quite fast. Mine has been rock solid for the past few months without a reboot. Just installed the latest OTA firmware with no issues also. Running Adblock which works well. Wifi range is quite good.

  • Would the Flint2 be a good purchase in my scenario?

HFC connection. NBN modem -> Flint2 -> Deco M5 mesh network.

Currently have 1 Deco m5 connected directly to the NBN modem and then two more M5 units acting as mesh.

Would getting the Flint2 in there as the main connection to my NBN modem increase the performance/efficiency of my set up?

    Thanks!
