It's on the side of the router (zoom into the second photo). There's a blue port (assuming it's a USB 3.0 port). It's very handy when you can simply tether via USB using your phone's 5G. This feature has saved us at work several times when the internet was down.

      • +1

It's USB3.0 but its pretty CPU limited. It's important to use an EXT file type, unless you recompile and include support for ExFAT. NTFS speeds are atrocious.

Using it for a failover USB modem? Perfect :)

  • +4

Nice router. You will need to use an old modem as a middleman to get it to work if you are still using fiber to the node.

    • Hoping to understand this better. Does the old router become the bottleneck to performance?

Practical case: rocking the stock standard Netcomm Wireless modem we got from Aussie Broadband. Connect this router using an ethernet cable and we'll get far greater streaming etc?

      • +4

FTTN & FTTB use VDSL2, so you need a supporting modem prior to this router. VDSL modem & routers in one do exist, and may be considered if you want a simple setup and don't need all the features of this Flint 2.

      • +3

If you have fibre to the node, this wont just by plugging into the wall & working as a replacement. You still need your older router to use as a modem as the Flint 2 cannot decode analogue internet signals passing through the phone line.

You can check which connection type you have here: https://www.nbnco.com.au/

The additional antennas will definitely help with WiFi reach and therefore speeds.

If you would prefer one device, ADSL/VDSL routers do exist but this one is particularly good bang for buck and will work just as well.

  • +1

Do you think it will go cheaper since Flint 3 is coming out soon?

    • Not likely for a while…

    • From what I understand the Flint 3 isn't going to be a strict upgrade, so check out whether you actually want this one anyway.

  • Nice, almost bought it at the $207 price.

  • +1

Flint 3 is just around the corner

    • +2

The specs don't look good compared to the Flint 2

    • +3

Will be at least 50% more expensive and if flint 2 firmware is anything to go by there will be a few months of kinks to iron out. If you need wifi 7 wait otherwise this is perfect.

    • Think that Qualcomm though and apparently not as easy to work with vs mediatek .

      • Yes, Flint 3 will possibly never run OpenWrt as Qualcomm does not like sharing their api/source code. Same as Broadcom. MediaTek are much more open source friendly.

        • Strange how it's completely the opposite with Mobile SoC's. Most development is for Qualcomm where as MediaTek is quite restricted.

  • ugh, just bought yesterday and arrived today.. $207

    • This happened to me on the last Flint 2 deal. I contacted Amazon and they refunded the difference, suggest you do the same.

      • Thanks, I just got online chat with them. They suggest me return the one I just got and buy new one with the code. :D

        • Hmmm … they offered mw a $15 credit (I too purchased the other day at $207, but delivery did not happen today like it should have)

    • I feel your pain, yesterday I got for 199….
urggg it was AU$207.67…Also got a marble (both from AliExpress) for something that can sit next to tv and have better partner acceptance factor (PAF).

Getting rid of asus GT6 setup which I used for mesh (dedicated tri band), feel that openwrt and the fork by gl inet is the best way to go for long term support. I do wish they made a non wireless router which I could leave in a cupboard :|

  • I am after router to connect to NBN box for a new NBN FTTP connection, I am planning to connect Deco M5 3 set mesh to it, is this any good or D-Link DIR-2150 AC2100 Wi-Fi Gigabit Router for $99 is ok? Thank you

    • TP-Link Deco M5 has a built-in router. Deco M5 is capable of around 850-920Mbps wired and up to around 550Mbps on Wi-Fi 5.

      1. How fast is your nbn plan?
      2. How much do you want to spend?
      3. How large is your home? Single level?
      • I plan to connect on 100 plan.
I don't want to spend a lot, only to do the job.
I have 2 story brick veneer 5 bedrooms, but as I said I have the Deco M5 with 3 sets, so should cover whole house.
So may be no need to buy a router in this case?
PS: I have Reolink camera system and Bosch alarm with WIFI IP module.

        • You don't need to buy a second router.

          • +1

            @Twix: Thank you

            • @huntabargain: All good. Get a TP-Link switch if you need extra ethernet ports. The switch gets plugged into the Deco.

    • +6

I live in a terrace home with 1000/50 FTTP with the Flint2 located in the middle.I get ~660Mb/s in my garage and 500Mb/s at my front porch. I get 960 in the same room as the router.

      I'm happy with my $182 Flint2.

      • -1

Gl inet fork or vanilla openwrt. I do wish they offered a non built like a tank look and just wrapped the thing in a standard white box :/

        • +1

Bog standard GLiNet, I haven't tried to tinker with it.

      • What device are you using to test the speed. My M1 Pro cannot go beyond 700mbps even with the flint 2 next to it.

    • The main purpose of this item is to act as a security gateway. Its capability to act as a wireless (or wired) router should be seen as a bonus.

You don't need another device if you're on fttp and already have a mesh router.

      • +1

This does much more than security.

        Great WiFi

VLANs, which is kind of security I guess

        Remote access (openVPN, wireguard, tailscale)

        File sharing

        Mobile data failover

        Family filter

And if you upgrade to vanilla OpenWrt it can run all sorts of other stuff including docker.

  • +1

Bought it last time it was this price. Needed to update the firmware before it'd authenticate using PPPoE (very straightforward from the web interface) and smooth reliable sailing since then.

I expected I'd need another AP because it was replacing a 3 node google wifi mesh system, but the coverage was better than I was expecting so that wasn't needed!

  • Highly regarded router, but is it overkill if I plan to install ceiling APs? Going to have another proxmox sff pc for NAS, plex and NVR, and people are suggesting a dedicated router instead of VM.

    • +1

It's $183, how much more money do you think you could save by going cheap and cheerful?

      • Perhaps a $50 asus off marketplace would be sufficient?

        • Horses for courses of course but I don't personally think taking a chance on an unknown bit of tech from Gumtree/Marketplace to save $130 is worth it, would rather something brand new, good specs with a 2 year warranty.

FWIW, I have Ubiquiti access points on my roof and use an Asus RT-AX86U, if my Asus was to die tonight I'd replace it tomorrow with a Flint 2.

    • Dedicated router is better than virtual router. I had a virtual router in proxmox before getting the flint 2. It was annoying as rebooting the proxmox host would bring down the internet connection.

  • I just bought this yesterday for $207 :(

  • I bought this delivered March 24th for just before 169$ 😂 I saw the deal I thought to double check. It almost replaced ax86u

  • been looking for it to drop to sub $200. thank you.

  • Currently tossing up between this or the TP-Link Archer BE550 for cheap(er) WiFi 7 - though reviews still don't seem to put much stock in WiFi 7 given the higher pricing.

  • Couldn't resist at this price. I'll be sad to replace my ASUS RT-AC68U, which has been a workhorse for 12 years but it's time for an upgrade and the ASUS won't last forever. Thanks, OP.

    • Got an Asus rog GT6 and will be glad to see the back of it (provided wireless mesh on 3rd band but the inability to degame it, weird quirks with isolation of intranet, painful you cant log into the admin panel here because you have a tab open somewhere and QOS that destroyed performance) only compounded with Merlin and other chap have yet to support it and it just feels shitty that you have to rely on them to provide options to install software on the box or provide vlan support. Also have an Ac88u but it’s EOL and no longer getting updates - still sufficient and I Put openwrt on it and while I could figure it out I don’t have days to burn tweaking it. Fresh tomato looked interesting but tied to Broadcom… so that is poo. So gl inet kit is a good compromise and can transition if I need or want to non forked vanilla openwrt.

  • Does anyone know if I can setup parental controls on this?

  • Could someone pls explain what is so special about this router vs normal one? Is it the free VPN aspect?

I am planning to switch to 1000/50 from 100/20 and have FTTB, is it worth the upgrade? Currently have TP-LINK VX220-G2v. Given the FTTB aspect, assume I have to keep the TP link as the modem?

    • Could someone pls explain what is so special about this router vs normal one? Is it the free VPN aspect?

This is a very good security gateway (I suggest reading up a bit on that) but also comes with wireless routing functionality built in.

  • How much of an upgrade is it over the Asus AX56U, which I bought 2 year ago?

    • doesn't use asus wrt for starter. even with merlin enabled it just feels half arsed in my opinion (this is not a slight on Merlin dev, they are workign within the constraints of the system they are authorised to). all depends on requirements really.

  • Just looked it up, performance-wise it’s on par with Asus Gaming AX6000, though the latter has a slight edge in some scenarios.

It’s a Chinese brand that retails for around AUD $150 in China, so $180 seems fair.”

  • Packet Processing Engine (aka Network Accelerator). Users can expect 2.5Gbit routing with near 0/0/0/0 load across the CPU cores. The downside to this approach is it cannot be used in combination with QoS features such as SQM and AQL

well thats a shame. I guess the best option for qos for us WFH people is always a second connection?

    • What about this - https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/traffic-shaping/…

      @Limbot

For those that are interested SQM QOS(openwrt.org) works really well on the Flint 2 to eliminate Buffer Bloat . Just make sure you disable "Network Acceleration"

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16402441/redir

      • Hmm perhaps relying on the CPU grunt to do the work will actually pull it off! I have a bunch of staff that WFH using VOIP and they're complaining of latency issues when others(kids etc) hog their connection loading the latest DaFuq!?Boom! clip

      • Worth remember too however that' you'll lose some bandwidth. My FTTN without SQM approx 80Mbps, with SQM approx 70Mbps but it's worth it for me as I WFH quite a bit and do quite a lot of a calls (voice and video) and have wifey working from home and son's gaming and even downloading patches at the same time.

  • I'm running an old, but super reliable, TP-Link Archer VR2800 in router mode with two TP-Link repeaters (one in the house and another in a detached garage) and this works well.

Would the TP-Link repeaters have any issues working with this router?

    • +1

No, they are just repeating the wifi.

Only if you had them in a mesh config would you need cross compatibility

  • I have this one. I use the Fritzbox 7490 in 'bridge' mode and this in router mode. Has stopped the frequent drop outs of the wifi my ageing fritzy was having.

I don't use any fancy features but want to do a vlan for IOT etc and maybe vpn etc.

Still getting lag spikes in Rocket League though. Maybe server issue.

About to test with Free superloop modem that they are shipping to me today. Got offered random freebie ex $20 shipping.

    • I'm also getting lag spikes in Rocket League! I bought this to replace a dual antenna Asus router thinking it was under powered and causing spikes, I still get the spikes but they just don't last as long. I don't know the issue. Router is only in the next room so don't think its a range issue.

  • I am planning to replace my router. I have got FTTP. Will this work or do i need extra modem?

    • +1

No additional modem required, just the router.

  • Is this good for Fttp?
Or am I better spending abit extra and getting a netgear or similar?

    • Yes, exorcist if you're going to utilise the faster NBN speeds in September

      • Yea ok sure thanks we are on a 1000/50 plan.
Mainly internet browsing, video apps, videos and online gaming. Is this a good router for that?

        • Yes, if you can utilise the 2.5gbe and wifi 6 capabilities.

          • @impoze: Thanks for the replies. I’ll give one a go. Would have to be as good atleast as our Telstra Gateway 3 you would think!

  • Currently have a Mi Router AX1800 and finding the speeds and coverage lacking considerably in a 160sqm home. Was looking into purchasing a mesh setup, however could this be something that would solve those problems?

  • Thanks OP, Just ordered these units, and returned a couple of the Flint ax1800 I bought 10 days ago at $169, so a much better updated model for just a few dollars more.
    Amazon returns are super easy.

    Fadge

  • -1

    It's says $207 not $182

    • Redeem the code……

  • What can I add to this for better coverage through walls and to go upstairs. Current Deco M5 not cutting it.

I see this does not have mesh so should I get something else entirely?

  • +1

I bought it because I need a new router and did not research at all because I trust you all.

  • Mine came today! Super fast delivery. Anything I should change in settings etc to get the most out of it?

    • If you're sharing with other people worth setting up SQM. 😊

      • Yea ok sure, I do have a lot of bloat so need to try and fix that somehow.

        • +1

Same here but my bloating is elsewhere in my abdomen…. :)

  • can confirm this thing is a beast, got it this morning, live in a concrete apartment, have 3 deco mesh routers and even speeds on the non main x55s were atrocious

This thing alone rips into them. Feels like it has double the range than the x55 deco. 2.4ghz band reaches the deadspots.

    Definitely an upgrade!

  • Is going to cheaper in next month?
