Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens $5779.15 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Georges Cameras & digiDirect

60

An expensive lens, but an impressive one for sure. Georges and DigiDirect have both dropped their prices. I believe this is a historical low.

Cheaper alternatives include the Tamron 35-150 f2.0-2.8, as well as the samyang 35-150 f2.0-2.8

Georges + payment & handling fee ($0 with bank deposit)

DigiDirect + surcharge ($0 with bank deposit)

Amazing lens if you can deal with the weight/size but I don't have enough kidneys to sell to purchase this.

Tamron is a better option money wise if you're willing to lose 1 stop

      Also benefit of slightly wider

It is that 1 extra stop that is pretty much the reason for this lens..

Huge lens though.. would have to wonder if you are better off just carrying a couple of smaller primes in that range..

      • If your workload is suited to primes you'd definitely be better off. I guess this lens will be popular for videographers.

    • Kind of goes without saying… like how F4 zooms are cheaper than F2.8. Or a 1.8 prime is cheaper than a 1.4.

      • That's not true for Nikon

    • +1

My belts going to need 2 additional stops with how little I'll be eating if I get either.

  • didn't think I would ever be saying that, but it makes Canon RF 28-70 F/2L look like a good deal at $3.9k

    • That would compete with the Sony 28-70 F2, which is about 4.1k

      • nice, I didn't know they made that, too. learn something new every day

now I guess I'll wait for Canon to roll out 50-150 F2 since the ball is clearly in their court

on and off I think to go Sony again, but only if they fix their camera body ergonomics.

        • They won't fix it. They havent done for years when they have had every opportunity to :)

          • @nafe: I know (insert sadface here) 🤣

I guess Canon it is for me then. welp

            • @shabaka: Sony bodies generally look quite similar but there have been noticeable improvements in Sony every time they update the body (A7 III to A7 IV/A1/A7RV to A9III/A1). If you don't like them then fair enough but I much prefer the size of the Sony bodies vs Canon and wish Sony stopped making them bigger lol.

@eecan: I concur there. last one I used extensively was a7iii, and it was a chonki boi. my go to lenses were 24-105G, 70-200G and 40G, no complaints about image quality, aside from lousy colour science

but every control, every corner of the body was literally eating into the palm or finger. the shutter. the wheels. the C buttons that can't be distinguished without looking at them.

I briefly used A9 and it was somehow even worse

not to mention how creepy and weird they look with battery grip on. the only reason I need battery grip is to work in portrait orientation for prolonged periods of time and can't say it was an improvement vs. no grip configuration

while Canon pro bodies while lagging behind Sony often in certain and very important departments (read: autofocus, d.range, video, etc) never failed to make me feel right at home every time. well apart from that touch bar on EOS R. we don't talk about that one around here. and although I still shoot it, the touch bar is totally disabled and rightfully so.

at any rate I will take that 2018 beauty over any modern Sony body which still look and feel like a joke to me.

my friend shoots a7rv and I am not jealous.

      • Yep, completely different lenses. This one is one of a kind (so far).

Looks like Sony is on a journey to make a new F2 version of the holy trinity of zooms.

  • Is this the lens people get for animals and safaris? I always see big lenses but I never know who gets these and for what.

    • A lens like the 200-600, or 100-400 would be good options for safari. If you're going all out some people would buy a 600mm or 400mm fixed focal length lens instead.

      • Agree. You need 400mm+ minimum for a safari. There are some good third party lenses that go to 500mm and 600mm too.

    • 150 isnt long enough. 150 is like cross street kinda distance.

  • My credit card and I are in a toxic relationship. It swipes, I cry.
