Price has gone down again for this highly reviewed Desiccant Dehumidifier.

If you missed out in the past, now's the time to grab one.

Perfect for drying clothes in the winter or preventing mould build-up (especially around windows, etc.).

Desiccant dehumidifiers are better for colder climates as they expel heat into the room.
If you have a dry function on your split system, that's fine when it's hot (because they expell cold air), but in winter, you need to go desiccant.

Have two - they work great. Definitely a must buy.

Been a lifesaver for keeping the ambient humidity down in our little ensuite in the Victorian winter after double glazing and shielded exhaust fans took a lot of the natural airflow out.

  • Anyone have experience running these in the bedroom?

My new place has windows that get covered in condensation (based in TAS) to the point where water starts to pool on the wooden windowsills. As we're now in winter I definitely need to get something sorted, but just wondering how loud people have found these? Db doesn't necessarily tell the full story if it's a particular annoying noise.

    • +1

Depends how well you sleep with white noise and if a heavy sleeper or not. On low, it's quiet enough most can sleep through it. High mode is considerably louder (although myself and girlfriend can tolerate it). Typical whoosing noise, cuts in and out when reaches 50% (I think) humidity level.

    • Amazon have a 30-day change of mind return policy for this item, so why not buy it and try and if you don't like it, return it?

      • 'Unless otherwise stated in this Change of Mind Return Policy, all items being returned for change of mind must be returned in the same condition in which you received the item. This means that, for change of mind returns:
New items must be returned unused, undamaged and unworn;'

This pretty clearly rules that out unfortunately.

        • +1

In my personal experience, I have returned 12 items in the last year because of a change of mind and always gotten a full refund, even if I had unboxed and tested it.

When returning just select "Does not meet my expectations" as a return reason.

Bought one at the regular price a month ago. We run it just outside the bedroom (small apmt) in low mode. Pretty quiet in low mode, about the same(in terms of sound/volume) as the medium fan settings on most air conditioning (bearing in mid this may be closer to you, so it may feel "louder").

Works really great, brings humidity down by ~10 % overnight on low. Tank holds enough for about 1/2 to 3/4 of the day, so depending on humidity, you'll be emptying the tanks 1 - 2 times daily. You can plumb in the hose for continuous drainage, but since its gravity-drained, not really practical unless you have it somewhere convenient to drain.

      The main negatives:
      1. High is pretty loud
      2. Auto setting is annoying as it goes from high to low constantly (it has no ramp up or in-between modes or ways to change this)

      Other notes:
      1. Releases warm air, so works as a minor source of heating. Sometimes i put it on high if I want to warm up the space a bit
      2. Has turbo and laundry modes but not usually necessary (we dry our clothes indoors)
      3. Winter has been mild here so far (max humidity in our apmt has been mid 60s after cooking / shower), no chance to test turbo yet

Overall, other than durability (which we can't speak for this soon), super happy with the purchase and can't believe I've only now started with one.

@NedStark102 you literally described my case, of which this Ausclimate Cool Seasons 10L Desiccant Dehumidifier solved.

I have double glazing and although the windows are generally ok, the steel frame around them develop literally puddles of water in winter (Canberra winter). I purchased this Dehumidifier last year, and the difference was literally night and day. For the record, I leave it running all night (usually around 10/11pm - 6/7am) and the puddles are basically non-existent (some days when its super super cold, there will be small droplets). During either end of winter (i.e. May and September), I tend to leave it on only on a 4-hour timer.

In terms of sound, when I did my research, I found that people either said it was a non-issue, or it was loud (especially in tiny rooms). Personally, I would note it similar to white noise (and as such it doesn't bother me at all, considering the alternative of water pools). I guess the good thing about buying it from Amazon is that they are generally good with refunds. Jump on YT, and you'll see a video of the guy who invented it, describing how to use it (and you'll be able to hear it).

Bubble wrap. Get two sheets and cut to size of window. Join the two sheets together with tape so the bubbles are on the inside and flat surface on the outside. Tape to window Condensation solved. If you can sleep then definitely run one of these in your bedroom. They put out a little heat, so will actually warm up your bedroom also. However, seriously, do the bubble wrap trick. Did mine 3 years ago and haven't needed to redo them. Yes, you can't see out the windows but that means I can now walk around my house naked and not cause my elderly neighbours heart attacks.

    • Got one for this issue, ran it on high before bed and it did double duty heating up the room and cutting the humidity. Our issue was the apartment was so well sealed that and cooking or washing would just add to the humidity and it wouldn't go down through a regular day. If you have humidity coming in and need to run it all night then your situation might differ, mine is off while sleeping

    • I'm in Tassie too. I don't run it while sleeping as I found if I run it before bed it does the job. I usually only go down to 50% humidity, but you might be able to go lower to have it last through the night.

Makes the room feel much warmer as winter humidity makes the room feel colder. Once you have the room heated to the temperature you like and the humidity down, you can turn the heater off sooner, or have it set to a lower temperature.

  • Are the new smart models much better? Is the smart wifi useful to perhaps turn off and on and to tell what the humidity is currently at and to notify you when full?

Trying to decide if I should go for the smart models or these model.

    • +2

The smart model is identical in the dehumidification functionality, but add Wifi control (and automation).

So yes, they are better, because you can turn them on remotely, or based on rules (like humidify levels from another sensor), but the wifi model is a lot more expensive.

    • +4

I have mine hooked up to a wifi smart plug (tapo one) and one of those smart temperature/humidity sensors from aliexpress.

This basically allows me to control it via google home/home assistant and is now automated to switched on/off based on humidity (over 60%/less than 50%).

I reckon this would be cheaper than getting the smart model.

      • +1

Can you please share what settings you changed on the dehumidifer to achieve this? I have the same model and when I turn on the switch at the wall, it comes on briefly with a beep, the window swings and then it goes off. I have to manually press the ON/OFF button on the dehumidifier to turn it on.

        • +1

Its on high mode. Just leave the unit running when you switch it off from the smart plug. It should run again once you switch on the smart plug.

      • +3

Not saying you have wrecked the dehumidifier, but smart plugs are not meant to be used with them because they have a cool-down/dry-out period before powering off completely.

        • +1

I've got 5 of these things and each of them tend to use around 1kw of power while running on high mode.

I understand it may not be ideal, but this saves me $ on electricity bills.

        • I was planning on getting one with a smart plug, but specifically to get it to start during the night after i'm already asleep (i.e program smart plug to switch on at 2am) and allow the dehumidifier to run its full cycle i.e 4 hour timer mode, and complete it's cool down period before powering off.

Would there be any issue doing this?

          • @NedStark102: The dehumidifier powers on at its last state. i.e. if the power goes out while it is on, it will turn itself on when the power comes back. likewise if it is off when the power goes out, it'll stay off. Not sure if it remembers time elapsed in timer mode.

            • @skid: Yeah that's correct, I had a read of the model's PDF and it confirms that.

Doesn't really matter as much whether it remembers the timer, I guess my concern was whether there'd be any concerns with longevity / potential electrical issues in the unit with it experiencing 'power outages' every night before being restarted at 2am for example

              • +1

@NedStark102: There wouldn't be electrical issues, but it'd be a longevity issue according to the manufacturer.

To play it safe, I use the RH cutoff if the dehumidifier is out in the living room or laundry and use the timer if it is in the bedroom. It'd be nice to have the dehumidifier turn itself on a half hour before I shower, but it's no big deal. (re-reading that, I sound wanky…)

                • +2

@skid: I guess an alternative could be to use a smart fingerbot

The Breville all-climate dehumidifier is $368 at the good guys commercial if you have access and want smart features. The previous Breville model rated not too far below this ausclimate in choice ratings, but the all-climate wasn't out yet for that comparison.

    • Is the Breville a Desiccant dehumidifier?

      • seems to be

      • +1

        Yes, the all-climate is.

    • It's showing as $549 for me

        • Yes that's what I had used.

But interestingly, logged back in again just now it is showing $368, while the same model that I'd added to cart a couple of hours ago is still showing $549

    • Why do these dehumidifiers have such as small tank capacity? The Breville has a tank capacity of 2L and extracts 8L per day, so you’d need to empty the container 4 times per day?

      • The Breville I'm referring to has a 4L capacity.
It's to keep the size down.
You can always dream up another solution because it comes with an included drainage hose…. Someting as simple as a bucket lol

  • I find I need to increase the indoor humidity during winter.

  • How is Kogan's at less than 50% of this price for $149?

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-smart-7l-desi…

    • +1

Completely different quality/brand, only 7L capacity.

    • +2

They are good and have wifi capability. Not as large/powerful so the Kogan takes longer to dry out than the one in the OP. Haven't scientifically tested it, but I feel the one in the OP is more efficient than the Kogan.

    • +2

Choice rating of 48 (2nd lowest on test) vs 89 for the Ausclimate

Did a price beat at Bunnings for $306.

    • Do they generally price beat Amazon?

Did you do it in store?

      • +2

        In-store. No issues.

    • +1

Thanks, asked for PB on chat, and got them to create a pickup order at my nearest store

      • Thanks for the tips.

      • Thanks, did this but then noted they don't keep the stock aside for you till you pay.

      • +1

Good thing PB quote is valid for a month!

      • Picked up this morning. They had kept one aside at the counter with a pricebeat label. Interestingly, the girl at the counter mentioned that Bunnings usually do not pricebeat Amazon, but anyways put this through.

        • +1

It's probably usually boomers coming in with screenshots of international sellers with prices in USD. They have no excuses for items old by Amazon AU.

  • +4

Swear by this for drying washing in winter - put the hangers in the smallest room you can and run the dehumidifier in there.

  • +1

MYER is selling this for $340. Can still try price beat at bunnings!

    • Update: just got a price beat successfully in store. Saved money and don’t have to wait for MYER to deliver .
