Looks good - Hopefully that image is up to date!
It's in the description as well.
@whitey: They have changed production between the two countries a few times .
It depends whether Jaycar's info is up to date. The German ones were really excellent and my preferred bulk battery - The newer Chinese ones are the opposite, they are terrible. I have seen them leaking new in the packet,
@King Tightarse: Hence why I asked OP for info on actual stock instead of jumping to conclusions. (These could possibly be old stock)
I used to buy them from Bumrings in the bulk pack when they were German made and they were great, but then went to Chinese and the failure rate was terrible, I only bought one pack of these. I didn't have any leak but had a lot of random failures. What I do is check all batteries (any brand) out of an item when it's failed and quite often there will only be one bad cell, so I check the voltage of the remaining cells and re-use them. Many people chuck the lot but I found the ones that were kept stayed good till they actually went flat. It's like if they're going to crap out, it was early in their life. Buying a cheap universal battery tester or multimeter would pay for itself in no time in savings from throwing out perfectly good batteries, not to mention the negative effect on the environment.
@King Tightarse: I find that they both leak. I got the German-made Varta Max Tech AAAs and they still leaked inside the sealed retail pack, 3 years before the expiry date.
Only buy what you need for a year or so, no need to stock up.
Used to like Varta from Bunnings as the cheap alternate to Energizer and Duraleaks (well, before I lost trust in those too) but then after a bad run with them leaking can't say I'll get them again. I've got ones from an older batch in a pepper grinder which are still going fine with no signs of leaking, big variation.
Since then I only need alkaline AA's in clocks now so since buying a pack of Energizer Max I think I'm set for a few years :P
Project Farm tested Vartas before as well and they didn't have as high capacity as the Energizer albeit who knows now with the variation in manufacturing with them.
Was the problem with the AA or just the AAA?
I had many problems with the AAA, but almost none with the AA. The AAA of all brands seem more prone to leak. I did raise this issue with Bunnings some years ago.
Yeah mainly the AAAs. A few AA's seemed to be quite short lived, but that's nothing compared to dealing with leaks.
I think i got it from Bunnings, it leaks.
Was at Jaycar the other day picking up my order, and one of the workers was saying that there was a lot of people refunding these batteries because they got the china ones
Op, can you please confirm country of manufacture and expiry date of the ones you got ??
The one I bought this morning is Made in Germany, with best before date 12-2030
The German VARTA company went bankrupt when sales of EVs fell, and the big demand for batteries for them that it had geared up to produce didn't happen. So, basically someone bought the name, and products bearing it are now produced elsewhere. Which may be good, or they may be cheap rubbish.
AI says this - VARTA AG, a German battery manufacturer, did not go bankrupt but underwent a financial reorganization and restructuring under the German Corporate Stabilization and Restructuring Act (StaRUG) in July 2024. This process involved reducing its share capital to zero, which led to the delisting of its stock. However, the company is now continuing operations and plans to become competitive again.

= in other words, it went bankrupt
@whitey: The description you provided in your own comment above is a response to bankruptcy. The article you linked doesn't say they resumed their original operations, only that a company with their name continues to exist.
@[Deactivated]: Probably the banks bailed them out, and in return took over ownership of the company by wiping out all existing shareholders, and the banks recapitalised the business.
"plans to become competitive again" involved moving from higher cost production in Germany to a lower cost produced in China model. They don't have a factory in China but instead use a few Chinese OEM factories.
The problem with this model is that the factory will provide an initial batch of fantastic quality batteries and over time, to save money, will slowly lessen the quality of the product. It's called Quality Fade.

I always thought Tesla used eneloops? 😲
Wundervoll
You looken sharpen todayen, mein Herr
"Papers please - Schnélle, Schnélle!"
Love how it says not for retail sale on the boxes, so are they wholesaling these?
It does not say that on the box that I bought this morning :)
It's just a manufacturer recommendation, just like RRP, the retailer can still do what they like.
Jaycar? Boooo
Boooo
Whooo ?
Known intellectual property stealers. I'd never do business with them.
Wasn't that like 10 years ago?
Could you please provide a source as I would be very interested in reading about it?
Thanks OP.
1.5V?
Yes
Anyone tried the Kirkland ones from Costco that can provide feedback?
Project Farm had them in his review, though only applies if they get them worldwide all from the same factory of course.
My local Jaycar at Rhodes still have plenty of stock
No more stock at Rhodes according to the website :(
Don't think I'll drive an hour to save $12
No Vartas for me.
Leaking AA and AAA
German made.
( possibly bought at Big Green Shed )
Get it right, its Hammerbarn!
Ah that's why they leak, hit with 🔨
German industrial rubbish - just like their cars.
I went to buy some from the big green shed the other week - their website mentions they're German made but the batteries say made in China.
They called me and cancelled my order.
Same. They called me last to leave a voicemail that order is cancelled. Also backed up with a cancellation email. But then this morning I received SMS asking to pickup order and an email as well. I will visit the shop soon to figure out
How did you go? I also got an email telling me my order was ready to pick up
i haven't heard anything about my order, still says "Processing" (selected pick up at the Springvale store). Tried calling them a few times, but no one ever answers
When you go to pick up make sure to check you actually have a full box (all 24) cause we just checked at my local and the boxes had knock offs as they aren't sealed
last batch of Vartas I got were really bad, I didn't get leaks but the lifespan of them was pathetic. I'm still on the hunt for the mythical bulk good budget battery
Thanks OP. The packs I picked up have a best-before of 12-2030, made in Germany.
Das ist prima
How are these like compared to Kmart Anko high performance alkaline batteries?
If these are the newer made in China Vartas, they are nothing like the old made in Germany ones.
I would think twice, even at that good bargain price - they leak so much!
