Earn Qantas Points from Regular Expenses

Hi. I recently got an Amex Qantas Credit Card which has 50,000 bonus Qantas points. I will be collecting 1.25 points for expenses using my card so will be redirecting all direct debits to this card as well as using it for daily expenses.

I do need to spend $5,000 on my card for the first 3 months to get the bonus points. I am keen to collect more Qantas points from other household expenses which we are due and some stuff I am planning to buy so I can use the points for a family holiday next year.

Some of the stuff I am planning to do are:

Switching to Qantas home and contents insurance - will get me approx 30,000 points with current offer.

Qantas car insurance - approx 6000 points

Switch to Qantas Red Energy - 2 points per $1 on bill paid on time. Approx $100-200 / month.

Woolies Everyday Rewards linked to Qantas earning 1000 pooints for every 2000 everyday rewards

Switch to Origin internet plan - 25,000 everyday rewards bonus, equivalent to 12,500 Qantas points

Considering to buy a new macbook air as well - might wait until gift cards go on sale; or if there’s any good deals on please let me know

Anymore I can possibly add?

Thanks in advance!

IME the services which earn you Qantas (or other) points are rarely the best value, or even close to it.

~100k Qantas points is not going to get you very far for a family holiday anyway.

I would go with the cheapest / best value services and put aside the money you save to spend on the holiday.

    • Thank you. Yes, will definitely look into that.

    Don’t do it

    • I already got approved the cc so will just make the most out of it. If it doesn’t work according to plan, will cancel card prior next annual fee.

  • As a long time (10+ years) Qantas points person.

    WW everyday points == YES.
Home / car insurance + energy + internet == big NO.

Also look out for the survey's (can easily make 15,000 points/month for little time/effort).

    • where can one find these surveys? thanks

      • Red planet research + usually get email if qualify (for what they are looking for).

        I generally get 1-2 emails a week.

At 150-250 points for a 10-15min survey, you must do very little else in a month to get 15,000 points/month!!

    • Why no for the insurance please? I have compared my current due annual fees for both home and car inaurances and it’s very similar to the Qantas quote including amount covered and excess.

Energy, I am a bit iffy because I did switch to Red before and noted they were more expensive but as no lock in contract, I am planning to just switch back to my usual provider after a while. Just wanted to get the points.

Thanks for the survey advise, I’m keen to try it too. :)
But please advise me on why to stay away from the insurance? Or if you have any other thoughts or experience. Really appreciate it. :)

With internet, I have previously been to Origin and have been satisfied but usually switch everytime the discount reverts back to normal price usually after 6mos, and to get the free Paramount subscription by signing in to new account.

  • Qantas points are about to be devalued, significantly in some instances. Never choose insurance, energy, internet etc for points as you'll just be paying more. With just personal expenses, it'll take you ages (years) to accumulate enough points for a decent reward but when you do have enough you'll be last in line for a flight reward (on QF, but EK is more feasible) and you'll pay heaps of fees to use them. Outside of some gift cards at supermarkets, I don't bother chasing QF points because of the above and I don't have a business.

  • Last time I had an Amex, I got rid of it because no one was accepting them. Has that changed recently?

I’ve taken the family on interstate work trips several times using Qantas points, I think they’re great.

    • Dropped Amex due to higher transaction charges by retailers. Wasn't worth the bother.

    • Depends on your spending profile really - most of my spend is at grocery or major department stores which basically all accept Amex and don't have surcharges.

    • I think it’s more widely accepted now. Will use it mostly for groceries. I do look into if there’s any surcharge before paying and plan to use either afterpay/zippay or use my mastercard instead.

Yeah, I plan to just keep collecting until it’s worth it. I don’t mind paying for cheaper holiday options for now.

  • People still use Amex?

    • I do understand that it’s not as widely availble as masterd or visa but the perks with the cc is better than the others I have looked into and I have a other cards to use if it has surcharge or not accepted. Bigger interest and shorter interest free period but I usually pay it off before it incurs interest.

    • I think it's still fairly popular for bonus points and churners (i.e. if you've exhausted banks churning regularly then you may as well take up AMEX while riding out waiting period).

  • points come at a cost

    • Yeah, thus just planning to loot some points from introductory bonus points then switching back anyway. Will make sure I’m not locked in.

  • How much are all these points worth though in $?

  • Are you planning to use the points for an international holiday for more than 3 people during school holidays? That can be difficult.

Don't just blindly switch because they're offering you some points eg for car insurance. Calculate what you value the points at - for example if you value the points at 1c each, the 6000 points means that their quote must not be more than $60 more expensive than an equivalent cheapest quote you can get elsewhere, otherwise don't buy it.

Plus redemption rates for qantas points are increasing again in August, so further devaluation of qff points.

  • Qantas Health Insurance has points, and also the Wellbeing App has points, also BP gas
