Heavy book (the series) for any age.

    • +1

Haha. He likes to read. We just run out of books he likes.

  • +5

just watch the shitty netflix adaptation

    • +2

      Auggie was insufferable

    • +3

      I liked it.

    • +11

Watch the Chinese version. Much better.

      • @clover I have only finished reading the three books, but is keen on exploring the tv shows, and understand there has been many adaptations.

Which one would you reckon is the best so far?

        • +2

Chinese series follows the book much closer.

        • +1

Yes, the Chinese live-action version (not the animated one) stays much closer to the original book. They've completed the adaptation of the first book and are currently working on the second. The most important character hasn’t appeared yet. Naturally, they couldn’t depict the Cultural Revolution exactly as it was written in the book—otherwise, the show wouldn’t have made it to air. But aside from that, the series remains faithful to the source material.

great novel but would prefer the text only version (even for kids)

    • I was battling between the text version. The reviews I have read said the graphic version is a bit easier to understand esp the science theory bit.

    I have decided I am the 13 year old….. thanks op….

if you have a 13 y.o that can read and comprehend all thje complexities of 3 body then you really have a special kid there

i mean even getting a kid to watch the netflix show and being able to elucidate and intelligently discuss the principles takes some going

  • +1

One of the best sci fi books of all time. Though very complex

  • +7

You'll obviously know your kid better than anyone here, but Three Body Problem might be the wrong way to go about getting them into reading. I read quite a bit and hated the book series. It had some really, really good ideas in it, but the writing was terrible. None of the characters behaved even remotely like normal/sensible people. Fun to think about in hindsight, but frustrating to read.

I don't know if you're after any suggestions, but other here's some stuff that's in a similar genre/age bracket and (imo) a lot more enjoyable to read:
    - Grounded/modern day sci-fi: The Martian by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary also by Andy Weir,
    - Fun/exciting sci-fi: Red Rising by Pierce Brown (this one has a bit of violence in it, might not be suitable for your 13 year old), Arc of a Scythe by Neal Shusterman,
    - Aussie authors: Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden, and The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix.

    • I would add the Skyward/Cytonic series by Brandon Sanderson. His Reckoners series is also very good for this age group.

For more recommendations, email your child's school librarian or check with your local public library Youth Librarian.

      • Great thing about Branderson is that there is a very easy transition out of his teen content, Mistborn and then Stormlight

    • the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.

in fact, anything by kim stanley robinson.

  • The series appeals to be because it has so many novel interpretation of.pop science/physic concepts. the story-telling is so unlike contemporary sagas of epic battles with large-than-life characters. His characters are ordinary everyday people.

I throughly enjoyed it because I love pop science. I cannot talk much about it without giving away spoilers

I tried the book but found the Chinese names in the book is a tough read. Found it difficult to keep track of the characters and who was who.

    • +2

i'm hoping Kindles will soon have AI so you can request it to change [uncomprehensiblenameA] to [name X] through the entirety of a book series 😏

    • Had the same challenge with audible version.

  • +1

I really enjoyed the kindle version not sure I want to pay $100

    • +1

I did actually buy it though
