Original Coupon Deal

The previous deal for X30W-J (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/906910) seems popular. Un Tech has the X30L-J for sale, which is a different variant to X30W-J but similar spec.

I don't like 2-in-1 so I prefer X30L-J over the X30W-J.

Worth mentioning it comes with 12 month warranty from the seller.

Hopefully better condition than those we got from ACT

I got one from a previous deal as a run-around computer. In general it's a great unit with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a ~2021 flagship 'business class' laptop …competitor.

Pros: The USB charging support was on my 'needs' list of features when I was looking to buy, and this thing is great. It can charge from almost anything. Screen is great also, with plenty of brightness and FHD resolution is more than enough for this size, and the Xe iGPU is decent. Keyboard and touchpad are above average. It's relatively light and compact; plus when the metal case gets wonky you can just bend it back into shape.. I also like the BIOS setting allowing me to limit battery charging to 70 or 80% (though I don't tweak BIOS of many modern laptops so not sure if this is normal).

Cons: 11th gen was the last year Intel was still living in denial about "4 cores is plenty" for mobile CPUs, so CPU hasn't aged well (still works for my VMs and dev work). One ram 'slot' is soldered so only one is available for upgrades (though I got a 32GB mismatched module working in mine). Also the full sized SSD slot only runs PCIe Gen3 since for some reason it's not directly from the CPU. And WiFi 6 module is soldered.

Worst feature: Mine loses battery even while switched off. Properly switched off from both Linux and Windows does seem to matter. I've gotten the latest BIOS through Windows updates and reset by unplugging batteries. The regular battery life isn't great anyway, with getting maybe 4-5 hours work from full after installing a "new" battery (AliExpress). Much less life with videos & such. I maybe broke some compatability with 3rd party SSD, RAM, and battery so ymmv.

    • Regarding the battery life, at least on current Linux flavours (haven't tested on Windows) I noticed that having the SD card reader enabled in the BIOS causes one of the CPU cores to be pegged at 100% which results in ~10W/hr power usage basically killing the battery in ~5h doing absolutely nothing ..

    Here's X30W-J i5-1135G7 / 16GB / 256GB for $292. Slightly slower, 2-in-1 (which I prefer), but does not have trackpoint on the keyboard (unlike X30L-J and ThinkPad L13 Yoga)…

    • I would prefer this. Plus it comes with stylus support. Not sure about upgradability but 16GB is plenty for most.

    • +1

That is the B-grade though. My daughter got an A-grade from ACT and is was almost as new.

      • True. I bought a B-grade Dell Latitude 2-in-1 from eBay / Australian Computer Traders last year. The wear & tear is very minimal but max battery is below 80%. It's always a bit of gamble getting a refurb.

      • A-Grade is here but more expensive https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186741965956
I bought one from the link and the screen has too many minor scratches across the screen so returned it. Then I found the X30L-J which is cheaper and suit me better

        • Thanks. Let us know condition once you've received this one please.

          • +1

@ritzaus: The one I got are in excellent condition. Screen has no scratches and I would say two levels above ACT's

            • @xmchen: Thanks so much..I shouldn't have hesitated with the purchase. Will keep an eye out for next time.
Update - was showing 5 available so got one. Thanks!
Last time I bought the 2in1 from another seller and the condition was pretty average. Great light laptop. Bigger bezel than I'd like but the portable lightweight device is great.

              • @ritzaus: from ACT? I returned that on Monday have way too many scracthes on screen

                • @xmchen: Yea bought last year. Battery was also really poor from act. Prefer the foldable version but have ordered this thanks to your feedback and others comments.

Prfer this too but the description doesn't instil much confidence about the quality though. Sounds like a pretty bad condition laptop

    • @scotty @grb

read the listing, possible bios locked

“Products are tested, and confirmed to be 100% fully functional. These devices may show cosmetic signs of previous use such as marks on the screen, dints, slightly worn keys or touchpad and heavy scratches. The device may have BIOS Lock or have under 80% original battery. Products may have a faulty USB Port or ethernet port (laptop only). This does not affect the usability and performance of the device. Includes 12-month warranty.

      • Cheers.

I mentioned I liked the BIOS option to stop charging at 70-80%, this is probably the "lock" they were talking about. My BIOS wasn't actually locked down behind a password, though one can be set up as desired.

I'm pretty sure this feature is separate to the battery discharge issues I have when turned off (or shorter than expected battery life in general). At the moment I'm assuming the BIOS still needs some 'behind-the-scenes' bug fixes for geeks like me who mess around with uncommon combinations of settings.

        • I just dont want to own a laptop wirh locked bios.

          • @McMaferMur: Yeah same. But I don't think that will be a problem. Having access to the BIOS is a reasonable expectation and you would for sure get a refund in that situation.

            • @grb: Seller smart they disclosed bios may be lock that can be used to refuse return.

              • @McMaferMur: Oh I see now, I mis-read it as saying the battery charge may be "locked to 80%" in the BIOS (i.e. the settings may be changed). My bad.

I have seen similar things in the past because they:
                1) Might be evil and sell a BIOS locked device.
                OR (much more likely)
                2) They didn't bother checking originally and/or don't want to check every device before shipping. Time is money after all.

I guess you can only cross your fingers. In case it is locked I think many would accept returns anyway. Plus if you only just ordered you can message the seller asking to check before it gets shipped.

As I said I wouldn't want a locked BIOS either, but as long as it's set up already it should still be fine for regular uses.

                • @grb: When company supply laptop to staffs the bios will be locked. Before selling the company staff maybe forget or miss to unlocked the bios. Its almost impossible now to unlock.

                  • @McMaferMur: True. I understand there's risks. But I don't think they're necessarily deal-breakers.

For the record my X30L-J was an ex-company laptop, BIOS unlocked but MS account locked. So it makes reinstalling Windows harder (still possible now but maybe impossible in the future). This was a negative and they offered a refund when I contacted them. I kept the PC because it was a good deal and I primarily use Linux.

      • That is the risk with ACT when you buy "used" conditions..

  • I bit the bullet. Hope it’s in actually good condition.

  • saw youtube about this, the build is kind of plastic-y

    • +1

They are. But they're still pretty durable and super light.

    • dell Latitude or this laptop is better?

  • omg already have lenovo 14" 2in1 but still want this i guess i can say different screen size haha

Bought this model with 4g slot (never used it) March 2023 $1323 from Mwave after having had Toshiba Porteges for years. Great business style notebook. Amazingly light for such a functional machine. Battery starting to fade after 2 yrs of daily use. Left it on the roof of the car one day when bundling the kids into the car after crossing a busy road. Drove off and after arriving home 10 mins later realised what had happened. Retraced my route and found it on the side of the road about 200m from where we left from. Has a few extra scratches but is still in daily use. Do a bit of IT admin on the side and find the inbuilt RJ45 port useful.

    does this work with Cashback

  • Device they sent me is still registered as corporate managed, when you wipe the windows install it tries to force you to log into a corporate account.

There are ways around this but for a non-tech savvy user wanting to use the device to run windows this would essentially brick the device for them.

Might just be me but I think selling devices that are still corporate owned (at least in Microsoft's eyes) is kinda scam-ish. A lot of users won't know what to do to get past this and it will be an issue you'll have to deal with for the rest of the life of the device.

Also who knows when Microsoft further locks down windows to prevent bypassing this even for tech savvy users. If they make these changes the device could literally end up being a brick for anyone who plans to use windows with it…

    • how did you bypass?

yeah this looks like a quick buy and dump
without doing any actual work to properly deregister the devices

Just got mine. A few notes about its condition:

It is definitely not brand new. Some light scuffs and scratches on the exterior (along with being very dirty, needed a wipe down), definitely a well used laptop but nothing major. Screen is near immaculate, but there is a light scratch where the body humps up between the trackpad and keyboard, which is a bit annoying cause I can see it pretty well on a white background (like in MS Word for example). It does not impact legibility though, and is not noticeable in regular content.

I’m torn with this one, imo it fits the “very good” description, but just barely. For the price, I’m not regretting it but the most disappointing thing is the light scratch on the screen.

I have not opened up the internals yet, though I’m expecting it to be all good but slightly dusty inside. I’ll give an update if anything major comes up.

    • Yeah mine was in pretty average shape too unfortunately, I had the exact same thought as you, it just barely passes for very good and I definitely wouldn't consider it refurbished, doesn't look like they did anything to it other than send it to me

Plenty of scuffs all over the interior casing (surprisingly more on the interior casing than the outside) probably because it was missing 2 of the rubber bumpers that would cushion the screen from making direct contact with the deck of the device. Screen scratches, a few areas where the screen was discoloured from pressure being applied to it (white spots where the pixels have failed) and yeah really dirty, there was glue residue all over it from stickers or something and strangely some of the keys had sticker residue too.

      Shame really :(

These company should grade in favour of customers. I mean if condition is A thry should grade it as B. So when customer receives they will happy to get more than what they expected. Not the other way around

        • I mean if condition is A thry should grade it as B.

what if the condition is F?

      • yeah really dirty, there was glue residue all over it from stickers or something and strangely some of the keys had sticker residue too.

yeah "glue" or someone's jizz …

more likely the second scenario since it is also on the keys

Thinking of cancelling my order now based on the comments. Excellent condition must have different definitions ..

    • free return if not meet the A grade, why don't wait till ti shows up at your door.

      • Still waiting. Apparently arriving next week. Hopefully the time taken means they actually check again before they send so quality should be decent. Hopefully :)

I received one today, same condition and screen marking as @jpeg-jpg

Just got this. So far it looks good. Not perfect but kept my expectations lower than I usually do. Physically in good condition which is pleasing. Just weird how a company can't be bothered cleaning the dirty marks off the laptop ..just a bit of a wipe down needed. Also strange that they have gone through the Windows setup, there is a user account and the battery is completely dead. Anyway all good so far. Much better condition than my previous one from ACT.
