nbn FTTP 1000/400 Real Use Case?

Ok, all you 1000/400 "business" users what are you all doing with that 400mbit upload speed? Is it just Linux isos?

Edit: Thanks, all. I'm now an influencer, running multiple video editing businesses and can justify the 1000/400 fttp upgrade. Much appreciated Ozbargainer family.

I have a 400/400 connection, and it's fantastic. I WFH and do not need to worry about anything, so it's so much better than my previous 100/40 NBN connection.

What I found to be the most significant difference is when multiple people are on video calls and/or working. When my wife was WFH during COVID, our 100/40 connection would bomb when we were both on video calls. Now, we have no issues. I do a lot of downloading/uploading for work and never have any performance issues.

My Dropbox syncing is pretty much instant and same with any FTP Uploading/Downloading.

Obviously, your speed is one thing, but the destination needs to have just as good capability. You could have 2Gbps but the source could be capped and its just a slow download.

    • +1

Oh, yes, thanks. Makes sense and I appreciate the non-Linux iso use case. Didn't think of multiple people on video calls, which makes sense.

I have NBN 50/20 and have had 2 people working from home (video calls), kids streaming to the tv and the connection is solid….maybe QOS on the router played a part?

        • +1

Nah, my old router didn't have QOS. It was 5 years ago and maybe things would be different now with my network, but I am not on NBN. I had NBN FTTN at my current place and was only getting 60/20 when I was supposed to get 100/40. I could get the FTTP upgrade, but I am happy with my 400/400 Private solution and costs less than an 100/40 NBN plan anyway.

I've noticed much better performance on everything I do with 400/400 and running multiple devices with streaming uploading etc. No sluggishness.

          • @geekcohen: How much do you pay for 400/400?

            • @congo: RRP is $231 a month and my previous employer paid for that for first 2 years.

Currently, it is $90 a month. I know the owner and help him out with some Web Dev stuff plus refer him work. I pay 12 months in advance in June, claim it as a deduction when doing tax.

              • @geekcohen: Thanks, do you know which plan it is for $231 a month?

        • +1

Same here 2 people WFH with 50/20 FTTC, on video calls all the time, and during the hols the kids would sometimes get on Youtube. No issues with everything going on.

    • +10

I agree with you on your dropbox part, but 100/40 with 2 video calls is far from "bomb"

if just 2 video call would destroy your internet, there must be another factor, like a old dodgy router that have no hardware NAT acceleration, bad wifi with no MIMO etc.

      • -1

Okay, "bomb" probably isn't the correct terminology, but it would become sluggish and I was connected via ethernet with my wife on WiFi. You definitely noticed the performance difference when running calls at the same time.

This was my old system when we were renting and it was still a reasonable router. I've since got full Ubiquiti and the 400/400 has been great, if there are ever any issues I've got Starlink as a failover. Sometimes I don't notice the difference or if it's a failover unless I see the notification on my phone.

The calls would also be in different solutions, like Teams for my wife and Google Meet for me.

        • +6

Although it's always good to have better connection speed, I still think it's likely the router that's bugging you before.

H264 compressed full HD conference video take no more than 8Mbps, H265 take even less.

number doesn't add up at all.

          • @OMGJL: Oh well, it was 5 years ago and I didn't have stats like I do now with my Ubiquiti. My upload now is on average 20mbps constantly with 56 devices connected. At the time, it very well could've been a hardware issue, but I don't have any issues with 400/400 now.

          • @OMGJL: Yep agree, for 'talking heads' even with FHD it would need only half of that to have good quality - 4Mbps would be fine.

        • +4

My wife and I are on video calls at the same time with no issues. Later in the day it's kids also playing xbox or streaming video. That's on 100/20.

          • +1

@Hellfire: 50/20, two vid calls, kids on Youtube. SmoothS. Plus me on remote desktop a lot no lag.

        • my GF often does WFH (every 2nd or 3rd week) …
video conference calls + file up/down from office network.

she does this on a 100/20 plan … never any issues or stuttering +++ at same time 1-2 other ppl are watching netflix (they're retired).

perhaps also how you VPN / connect into your office network / network routes may be at play ???

          • @simplystu: No VPN was in play as I had everything locally or my fixed IP was whitelisted since I was in control of everything IT, I avoided using the VPN where I could.

It wasn't just me with issues, my wife would experience it as well. Very possible it was my router config at the time, I don't run the same setup anymore, so hard to detemine now.

            • @geekcohen: so just to confirm …
that means you are connecting to your work network remotely VIA RDP ???

              • @simplystu: us too, we connect to our workstation at work via Citrix, which is basically RDP.

              • @simplystu: No. I had all the main servers (which was only about 3 or 4) with my static IP whitelisted.

Then if I needed something else, I had a Amazon RDP machine with the VPN on it that I would use. I avoided using the VPN directly on my machine.

I do 'tech support' for my family - my own home with FTTN, and my mum's home with FTTB. Both have 50/20 services.

        The consumption:

        Me: single TP-Link WiF-6 router to NBN 50; WFH during the day with meetings, virtual desktop, vpn; video streaming after-hours;

        Mum: 4 x Ubiquiti 5GHz band AP's to Ubiquiti PoE switch, the switch has a GigE uplink to an Optus router for NBN 50; 3 x TVs video streaming via WiFi; occassional me visiting to WFH;

For both sites/locations we get at least 45Mbps/16Mbps

Perception: My mum's home connection feels a lot smoother than my TP-Link WiFi-6 when I work there.

Conclusion: WiFi to GigE switching in the same device (TP-Link router)

not doubting your claim, but I am surprised to hear a 100/40 connection struggled with two simultaneous video calls. platforms like Teams and Zoom use far less bandwidth than that

      • -1

Oh well, it was 5 years ago and I didn't have stats like I do now with my Ubiquiti. My upload now is on average 20mbps constantly with 56 devices connected. At the time, it very well could've been a hardware issue, but I don't have any issues with 400/400 now.

100/40 shouldnt give you any issues with running multiple Teams, Zoom, streaming.

        • yes … has been highlighted several times in this thread.
some ppl still don't seem to get it.

but hey … let them OVERPAY (paying for a service that is UNDER utilised) … in some way's, they are subsidisng the rest of us :) :) :)

          • @simplystu:

but hey … let them OVERPAY (paying for a service that is UNDER utilised) … in some way's, they are subsidisng the rest of us :) :) :)

Not overpaying. 400/400 is costing me $90 a month. About equal to NBN plan over at least 100Mbps.

My 400/400 isn't NBN either, so not contributing to them in anyway.

        • One of seven, respekt Ozbargainer, seriously. Yes, legit use and thanks I've convinced myself I need 400 upload when I don't. I'll start multiple businesses in video editing… All I needed.

        • +2

are any of those 7 companies hiring? lol

    • 8K that's pro level

      • Yeah, got a couple RED V-Raptors ;) Up to 8k@120p - roughly 1TB per hour of footage !

        • Anyone with a Blackmagic URSA Cine 17k or a URSA Cine Immersive would find 1000/400 slow. 😎

URSA Cine cameras ship with 10G Ethernet and 12G SDI as standard and can do 12k@100fps (120fps in widescreen), 8k@180fps (224fps in widescreen)

But even with more affordable cameras, working in Resolve using the cloud collaborative workflows, remote colour grading, live proxies, etc. you need as much speed as you can get.

When I was working on Beyonwiz firmware and the software feeds / repositories, I would routinely need to upload 40GB ~ 50GB several times a day.

Why are you on the Labor 250/100 plan and not your favourite Liberal 25/5 plan? It's more than you'll ever need now and into the future.

        • Why are you on the Labor 250/100 plan

Labor wasn't in government when I got upgraded to fibre.

          • @jv: Downgrade your plan to prove your claim.

          • @jv: He’s got you done like a dinner there jv.

        • -6

          your favourite Liberal 25/5 plan?

          That is what Rudd offered…

With the rollout of a new ‘Fibre To The Node’ (FTTN) network, Federal Labor will
increase speed to a minimum of 12 megabits per second – so fast that household
entertainment, business communication and family services will happen in real
          time.

          https://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/download/library/partyp…

          • @jv: Rudd gave you 250/100 which you took with open arms.

            • @Guybrush57:

              Rudd gave you 250/100

No, that only became available in our area under Scomo.

              Rudd offered us 12/1

                @jv: Wrong.

                  • @jv: Labor announced fibre NBN in April 2009. You have linked an incorrect document from March 2007. Maybe you should use your Labor 250/100 plan to do better research?

Labor announced fibre NBN in April 2009

Nope. You got 250/100 under Rudd. Scomo's bad idea to cancel Rudd's good idea then backpedalling to reinstate Rudd's good idea does not make Rudd's good idea Scomo's idea. The good idea was Rudd's.

the only benefit that'll apply to me is rsync backup to another site, backup/upload/restore VPS, stream movies from home server for friends, vpn to home, view my photos etc.

which is mostly achievable with my current 1000/50 plan except the stream 4k movie part.

I'd be more than happy to take 500/100 if the cost is the same. or I'd take 1000/400 if it doesn't cost too much more (1000/40 @ $89 pm for 1 year, black friday deal with Superloop)

    • Real Ozbargainer comment, value for money. Totally agree, I think if most ozbargainers were honest with themselves then 400mbit upload isn't needed. However, I don't want to lie in my coffin one day and regret not having a 400 mbit upload connection…

Then you must have had your head in the sand as usual.

      • Same cost as current 1000/50?

        • Mostly yes. It's the same plan beefed up. Wny cost increase is because the 1000/50 was due for a proce increase. You also have the 100/40 beefing up to 500/50 at the same price if you lock into one of those 6-month or 12-month contracts.

          • @Guybrush57: 100/20 boosts to 500/50.

Three people in the house, two of us running a design business, one a student. On the old tin-can-and-twine LNP NBN we got 40Mb down (max) 8 up (max). Every day was an endless series of conversations about who was using all of the bandwidth and then it turned out to be nobody, just someone's iPhone was backing up to iCloud. It's not just 'linux ISOs' coming down at 850Mb/s from usenet.farm, it's everyone's phones syncing to iCloud or Google. It's Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud Drive syncing. It's Backblaze running. It's WeTransfer. It's Zoom and FaceTime. It's the IP cameras streaming. It's the Ring doorbell. It's Plex when we're away from home. I'd go full 1Gb/1Gb if it was slightly cheaper.
