Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 Headphones $299 Delivered @ Addicted to Audio

70

Launched at $479 in Australia but now priced at ATL of $299 for the mid-year sale. I think the Easter sale was $400. Held back from buying it then but just grabbed a pair in white from the store. Would have loved the Noble Fokus Apollo but at $629, could not justify spending the additional $330 after comparing with them. The guys at Addicted Audio was fantastic as usual, allowing the trial without any fuss or pressure to buy.

On the cans - Great sound for a bluetooth headphones, so-so ANC and transparency mode - similar to probably B&W PX7S2e but arguably with better sound. Also, Cambridge Audio is famed for its Class A/B aplification. Fantastic battery life and replaceable if one day it dies. If sound quality is your priorrity for an ANC headphone, this is a great deal. Look elsewhere if you are looking for top notch ANC or foldable headphones like XM4/6 or QC Ultra.

  • It's seem like saw this last easter day 319$ anyway pretty great price.

    • Sorry I didn't monitor the price that closely so you may be right. But I agree at $299 it is pretty good for the sound quality you get.

  • Unfortunately, I can see why they keep dropping in price - and I wouldn't be surprised if they hit $200 soon.

I really wanted to like these and was prepared to pay full price shortly after release. On paper it seemed excellent, especially with the class AB amplification and the user replaceable batteries. Unfortunately, they just don't sound particularly good - from memory, it had a very one-dimensional soundstage, leaned clinical - but not in an analytical way, it was verging on (but thankfully never quite got to) tinny, and the detail retrieval and clarity weren't competitive with other options that cost less on sale, like the Momentum 4 (which I ended up with). The sound quality reminded me of a pair of Sony XM3s in many ways.

At $200 they're a decent buy, at $300 - I think you're better off going with the Momentum. If you're willing to stretch higher, drop the noise cancelling, and take on a bit more weight - the Audeze Maxwells are my pick for the best sounding wireless headphones - it actually holds it own against wired closed back audiophile headphones that cost significantly more.

One thing that did really shine was the construction - feels really well put together.

    • I think they sound better than Momentum 4 from memory. Certainly not tinny. Sound stage is pretty good when I AB'ed against my Aune AR5000 and NF Apollo. Mid range is a bit forward and warm. I think at $300 it is pretty good but at $200 it would an absolute steal, I suppose it can be possible if replacement model is coming out soon.

      • I was so surprised and disappointed, as I'd read a lot of glowing reviews - to the point that I wonder if the pair I tested was a bad set? I tried it the week it launched, so it could have been.

I also didn't think they leaned particularly warm, I was hoping they would, as I really like warm signatures - and own a set of LCD-2s. I do agree the sound was forward. The pair I tried definitely didn't sound better than the Momentum 4s to my ears (which was also surprising), as I AB tested them at A2A, along with the Maxwell. Might warrant another visit.

Are the NF Apollo Noble's wireless headphones? I haven't tried them yet either, how are you liking them? I used to have a pair of Noble IEMs about 10 years ago which were great!

        • Yeah maybe the firmware has improved it somewhat since then. Certainly the ANC was improved. Maybe worth another visit to try… Momentum 4 is pretty good as well but I think it lacked details compared to P100. Also depends on what codec you are using. I was using Aptx lossless and flac files to test.

NF Appolo is a Wireless ANC and their first foray into this category. Impressive and well balanced sound wise. Nice highs and good details. Noise cancellation is better than CA P100 for sure, maybe due to it's excellent passive isolation. It seems more comfortable as well.

Just can't bring myself to pay double for it relative to CA P100.

          • @Redsin: I'll definitely have to try them out again, will check out the Nobles too - although I suspect you're right, $300 is about the point of steep diminishing returns for ANC headphones.

            • +1

@poppingtags: keen to hear if your impression has changed. You prob know this butbdo check with Addicted to Audio if the EQ is set to some setting. Or even better go with app downloaded.

Listening it in the way to work on a train, the ANC is adequate. I can enjoy the music no problem. Yes sound quality is as expected. Listening with EQ flat and it's already impressive.

  • I own these, they are an outstanding buy for the price. What is a better option?
