  • awsome toppy!! good value!

  • How do these compare to the Samsung 3d blue ray player with twin tuner record 500 GB deal from TGG few weeks back for $225?
As you get a 3d Blue ray player with wifi.

  • äre you sure it includes shipping… it says "NEW YEAR SPECIAL TRF-7160 (Refurbish) $200inc GST + shipping Limited Time Only"

Im assuming it means + shipping as in need to add shipping costs?

  • This is an awesome PVR, it dpes quad record (so 7/7two, 2/abc24) as an example as well as IR (intelligent record) for tv series, just use the blue key once on the GUIDE and it will record the whole tv series automaticly for you! Its also 1/3 off for cash price from jbhifi $290-299 (rrp is around $400)

  • The $200 includes shipping, from what I could tell (ordered one - thanks).

  • Yes $200 includes gst and postage - mine arrived today ! The front panel looks a little scratched as it is quite shiny, however its not noticeable after installing it into my entertainment unit.

Remote control is sensitive but works well from my couch. USB port is at the back so I have installed an small extension cable. The remote control has lots of buttons - but with a little practice the navigation is straightforward.

  • I don't have much experience with refurbished products, but I heard my mum say she wanted one once. Bought, and we'll see how it goes…

  • I can't speak to whether this particular Topfield model and its firmware are good, bad or indifferent, but my experience with an earlier model might serve as a worthwhile caution for some.
Despite reading some mixed assessments about Topfield in general I bought one of the 'original case' models about four years ago (unit lasted about two). Model - 7000 and something - had been around in its basic form for at least a few years and with the firmware having been through a number of iterations I figured at least that would be reasonably well sorted. Not really. Plenty of things that I liked, and I learned quite a few tricks to prevent it from crapping its pants and freezing, but still…
Suffice it to say, I think I got a bit of an insight into why one of the top guys at Topfield left the company in dismay to start Beyonwiz.
Maybe if I had bought a (much more expensive at the time) Beyonwiz it may at least have lasted a bit longer - and been at least a little closer to trouble-free. Maybe. Regardless, Topfield's particularly low score for reliability in a Choice mag survey about a year ago was not a surprise.

    • The 7160 is a very reliable unit, unrelated in any way to the 7000, which were plagued by problems. Then again, the first HD recorders from virtally all brands had major issues which were never sorted out, not sure why.

The only thing you do want to avoid with the 7160 is the latest firmware available, when checking online from the Topfield itself. If you're running any TAPs, this firmware will cause constant reboots. See the iTopfield forums for more detail. http://itopfield.com.au/forum/

For anyone wondering what TAPs can do, have a look here. http://www.tapworld.net/ The 7160 runs what are known as TMS TAPs, you can do all sorts of seriously useful things with them, for example, AutoScheduler gives you a Season Pass scheduler that makes the Tivo look like a toy.

  • Bought one when it was $190 shipped (refurb). No regrets.

Just don't have enough time to watch at the stuff it records for me so the HDD fills up easily ;)

    • Same here. Great device. Only thing I don't like is that sometimes copying recordings to an external usb device can be very slow.

  • g12345567 yes I experienced the slow copying previously also. I only ever used it if I had no other alternative. If you want to download a program I suggest you try Napper software.
