  • I'm having trouble finding more information on what's included with the Airalo eSIM package; I'm looking at the EU one. What is the expiry on this, does it include voice/text? And if purchased, when does it need to be activated by?

    • +4

If you're looking at the $56.50 EU plan, it's overpriced for what it is (a data-only plan), even after 25% discount ($42.38).

Have a look on eSimDB.com for cheaper plans, I've preselected their "Europe" plans: https://esimdb.com/region/europe

      • At the top, select AUD as the currency
      • Click on "Filters" and select:
        • Under "Data" move the left slider until it says "10GB - 50+GB"
        • Under "Validity" move the left slider until it says "1 Month - 6+ Months"
        • if you want the eSIM to have voice and text, turn on "Hide data only plans (no Voice / SMS)"
        • Hit "Apply"

Now everyone's plans are shown, in order of price for the filters you have set. Prices start around 17 AUD for the plans with voice, although that plan (GlobaleSIM) doesn't seem to have texts, and you have to purchase "voice minutes" at extra cost. The second one in the list (Roamify 12GB, 16 USD/~25 AUD) does include voice and SMS, significantly cheaper than Airalo's plan.

When you click on one of the plans, remember the plan name and the price. You'll be taken to eSimDB's webpage for that provider. Scroll down through the plans until you see the same price, check it's the same plan, and click on "details". This will show you the countries that plan works in, and which telcos are used in each country. Usually it will also show you whether tethering is allowed, and whether you can "recharge" (add more data to) the eSIM. Sometimes it will give you even more information.

If you decide that's the plan for you, note down the name, and the price shown in brackets. Now click on the button that says "Official Website". A new browser tab will open, with the supplier's website. Note for some suppliers (e.g. KeepGo), clicking on the "Official Website" button opens a submenu. Click on the one appropriate to your plan's name.

Now you have to find the plan on the supplier's website, and purchase it. Note those prices may not be in AUD, the price in brackets that you wrote down is the price in foreign currency that you'll pay.

Note also that there are a small number of eSIM providers where the data doesn't expire for a year or more, and a few where the data never expires - these have "No Expiry" beside them in the listing on eSimDB. Their data is typically more expensive, but unlike other eSIMs, when you have data left at the end of your travels, you can use it next time you travel in the same region.

Just like any other internet purchase, you should research the supplier you're buying from, to see how reliable they are and how good their customer service is.

What is the expiry on this, does it include voice/text?

Although eSimDB's listing for Airalo indicates that calls and texts are possible on this plan (Eurolink), it appears to be in error. Looking on Airalo's website, it looks like you'd have to increase to a different Airalo plan, Discover+ (124 AUD!), to get voice calls and texts.

Have you considered using WhatsApp for calling and messaging other people traveling with you? It works quite well, and you can also call people "back home" in Australia (or wherever) if they have WhatsApp installed on their phones. You can't call conventional phone numbers and mobile numbers though.
