Created Yet Another Salary Calculator - Seeking Feedback https://aussalarycalculator.com.au

Hey guys,

I’ve recently launched https://aussalarycalculator.com.au, a free and Australia-specific salary calculator that helps understand salary package, super contributions, HECS repayments, salary packaging, and casual loading.

I know its a crowded category, but I just wanted to explore, and also felt that the UIs for existing calculators were dated.

I’d love feedback on two things:

Usability: Is the calculator clear and easy to use? Are any fields or results confusing?

Functionality: Are there features missing that you'd find useful (e.g., contractor vs employee comparison, overtime/casual loading, family tax offsets)?

The site is early-stage, and I’m genuinely interested in making it as useful as possible. Any comments, suggestions, or even criticisms are much appreciated.

Thank you!

No way to change superannuation %? For example APS/government is 15.4% and Uni jobs pay 17%

What does it provide that existing salary calculators don't? Something like https://paycalculator.com.au/

    • -8

government is 15.4% and Uni jobs pay 17%

Why isn't everyone the same ?

      • +2

Because not everyone want to be you

        • -4

I'm not an employee, so super is optional.

Employees however should be treated equally…

          • @jv: That's commie talk.
Nothing wrong with having legislated minimums but the freedom to offer more.

              That's commie talk.

Nah, not everyone get the same salary…

but the freedom to offer more.

              Not when it's the tax payer's money…

  • Thanks for the feedback, will implement this change. Well yeah it just offers modern UI, has not got as much features as the existing one. Will slowly iterate and build these features.

anddddddddddddd how is this different to https://paycalculator.com.au/

    • +1

      it has got emojis :-)..
erm it's not, just another wannabe in a crowded place..

    • also, it compares your salary with the median in the trade with the Occupation (optional) field.

  • +2

What's the point? Don't I already know how much I get paid?

    • +2

You get to see it in a pie chart.

  • For those of us who live in Sydney, this needs to tell me about negative gearing income

    • +1

For Vic, it needs to subtract land tax.

      • That’s easy, in Vic, land tax = gross income right?

        • -1

It's actually a bit more than that now…

Price of Jacinta's train set is nudging over $200 billion…

@jv: I thought it was Dan's train? Anyhow, I can't wait to go for ride.

Anyhow, I can't wait to go for ride.

Labor are already ‘taking you for a ride.’

    • ah that might become another full on thing, as I will have to know your depreciation, rental income, expenses etc.

      Yes

Do something with EV novated leases, there's a good excel sheet out there, make it have a simple and advanced options.

    • -1

Do something with EV novated leases

      Why?

      • I found the excel sheet complicated, it's to do with take home pay and it's an area that's not as crowded.

        • +1

I found the excel sheet complicated

          So why not fix it?

Novated leases are not rocket science…

        • can you share a link to the sheet?

    • -1

The simple option makes it inaccurate and for something like EV novated leases, accuracy is important.

      good suggestion, next project!

    • Pimping your dignity on ozbargain doesn't count.

    • You only take home $14k out of $190k ☹️

      • I know, pie will tell you how much chunk taxes are eating..

        • I already know how much I'm paying in tax? It's literally in your pay slip. Or you can just chuck it in the ATO calculator if that's all too hard.

You can't change any of this anyway, so I'm just unsure as to why any of it matters?

          • @brendanm: Budgeting?

            • @ronnknee: You already know how.much you earn though? How does this help at all. I get paid $X per hour and work an X hour week. That means I earn $X per year. It just don't get it.

https://paycalculator.com.au/ already exists and I like it more. Not sure why you made this.

    • Plot twist, this was created to drive traffic to pay calculator? Working for me, I hadn't heard of it before.

  • +1

I like how it looks and feel it is easier to read and digest compared to the elephant in the room.
It looks a lot more modern and the contrast seems easier on the eyes.

But I'm afraid that's about where my positives end. It's lacking a lot of features compared to competitors and it also looks a bit weird on a phone / narrow resolutions.

    • +1

thanks for liking 'some' of it! Yeah, I agree, lot of features missing that I need to slowly build in.

  • MalwareBytes blocks the site

    • hmm funny, may be they dont like react JS

  • Is there a spreadsheet version I can use instead?

  • UI looks nice and responsive, also looks a bit too simple. Maybe would be good if there's an option to make it more detailed?

paycalculator is quite comprehensive and very useful for my needs. As a customer, I would need a compelling reason to make the switch.

    • Thanks for the feedback, yes feels a bit dumbed down. Intentionally started with a simple one and still keep adding features if there is interest.

  • As about 8% of the male population is red/green colourblind it would be nice if people could try to avoid the use of shades of red/orange/green when displaying charts.
That's even more of a problem when viewing that other site.

    • Whoa wow thanks for this an eye opener indeed.

  • As someone who has just started a new job this tool was very helpful so thank you.

    • +1

      Thanks! 😍 made my day!

  • Here are my thoughts after 2 20 minutes of use.

Firstly, good on you for having a go at creating something that you see as useful, and being open to feedback and improvements.

    • UI is nice and responsive is a positive. Much more attractive to use than paycalculator.com.au
    • It would be nice to see tax, Medicare, and take home pay shown as percentages as well, to show effective tax rate, etc.
    • Where does the salary comparison data come from? That should be explained somewhere, because those estimates can be wildly wrong/inflated/outdated etc depending on the source. Similarly with 'average' salary. Need to be careful/clear if you're reporting the mean or median wage because it makes a difference.
    • The occupations shown are also very biased towards tech/engineering. Basically no trades shown.
    • The occupations have had Title case applied which has messed up some of the capitalisations e.g. Ceo [sic]
    • Why is the feedback box at the bottom not the full width of the panel?
    • Some of the margins/padding needs sorting out in mobile mode.
    • Might be worth thinking about a dark mode, and colour-blind friendly colours for graphs and positive/negative values.
    • What's the point of the visitor counter? I'd remove it. It seems like it's basically just vanity, and you can do that either smaller at the bottom if you want it public, or just use back end Analytics and see them privately yourself.
    • All the other extra options you can edit in paycalculator.com.au are missing, and while they won't be applicable to everyone, many people need different settings for their situation. Super changes, salary sacrifice, etc etc. As a quick guide, then this is fine, but if accuracy is important (which I'd argue it is), then you've got some work ahead of you :)
      • Personally I would put those additional options in another tab or at least hide them under a collapsible section, to neaten things up a bit.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit :)

Really appreciate mate! That’s definitely moar feedback than I can digest! Just kidding☺️ thanks for taking the time and I will get to the laundry list sooner or later!

    • +1

Thank you @moar bargains for such a detailed feedback. I have tried to implement few of your suggestions in the latest version. See if you like this one!

      Thank you!

      • Nice work! Great progress 👍
One minor quibble/suggestion is if you changed "Add second job" to "Add additional income sources" in the advanced tab, it would cover second jobs, but also rental income, dividends, capital gains etc. Could even allow people to label the "income sources" in advanced if you felt adventurous 😉

        • thanks mate!

  • I haven't seen a "site visits" counter since the early 2000's…

    • I know it was more of a way for me to see the interest in site but reeks of age, will remove it in some time

  • Don't listen to the haters, keep the site visit counter!

Also would be helpful if you added an option for salary packaging,
also maybe a section for additional income streams such as dividends and rental income.

    • thanks for the feedback and encouragement!

  • I like the colours, it's certainly easy on the eye. As someone who uses paycalculator.com.au every day to check the accuracy of data on payslips, can I suggest the ability to alter the tax rate to allow for a second job ie without the tax free threshold?

    • sure thats a good feature to have!

    • Hello @miwahni

I have tried to incorporate your suggestion. There is a new version live now, see if this is what you were after.

      Thanks!

      • I don't think I explained my use case properly. If I'm checking a payslip to see that the data is correct (I work in finance) then I use paycalculator to check that the tax and super matches. If the tax on the payslip is out of line with the calculator, and I know the payslip is for customer's second job, then I can use the little toggle for no tax free threshold to see if the tax on the payslip then matches. It's not a cumulative total between two jobs that I'm looking for; it's whether the tax on one particular payslip is correct for a second job. Thanks for trying though.

        • Okay, thank you, just repeating my understanding - so you want the ability to toggle tax free threshold for both jobs?

          • @addicted: I think they're meaning just toggle it for the currently entered details. E.g. just like you've got a box for bonus, they were after a (check)box that removes the tax free threshold from the current calculation.

The additional jobs bit in the advanced window is good, so don't get rid of that, but perhaps add the ability to remove tax free threshold there as well?

  • Put in $50k as the base annual pay.
Income tax shows a negative value…

    • Hey kaos, yes negative is a representation to indicate its an outflow.
