Ya, some people do including myself, it is just like someone like spending $$ on cars, phones, etc. I just bought a $199 Fenix TK75 torchlight, my office colleague thinks I am crazy as I think I have bought 4 torchlight in the last 4 years, lowest with 800 lumens.

    • +6

Your comment… "$47 for a torch… really? do people actually buy this stuff?"

Not sure about u but I can't see in the dark.

For its size/brightens/technology it is a bargain

        • +3

because a phone cost more than $47? duh?

true OZbargainers walk around with cheap $21 phones with $10 telstra prepaid cards… haven't you been here long enough to learn?

seriously, the torch can be submerged in water up to 2meters.. so you can bring it to a swimming pool and use it as a lighting equipment for your phone camera… oh wait, your phone will drown.

        • +1

Damn, this guy took all my negs :(

        • $200-700 for a phone… really? do people actually buy this stuff?

    • +5

$47 is a bargain for this torch. I bought one in the previous deal so yes people do buy this stuff.

    • I have once bought a torch for $670US.

      • +1

Wait up! Is that the one thats so bright u can cook and egg?

        • +5

As a result, I am permanently blinded from it.

        • you don't need the torch then…
I'll take it off your hands for $1..I been wanting to try cooking eggs and bacon with pure manmade light.

      • You are insane. This is not a personal attack, but a considered medical diagnosis.

        • I have returned this expensive torch after a week as it was not up to the quality I have expected for the price.
It was hand made. The seller was well regarded in the forum. He was ok with my decision.

  • +6

like a car high beam in your pocket
    worth every cent
will light up a whole room if pointing to roof
so many uses for survival, repairs, geocaching etc etc
can go underwater 2m for 30mins light up a pool

    • +1

Working fine and have just bought one, damn, I am crazy. LOL.

  • Wonder how fast is the delivery to Aust?

    • My last delivery from them took around 2 weeks, not bad considering that was over Christmas time.

    • I ordered one on 18/12 and am still waiting for delivery to Perth. Had to chase them up, and got a HK post tracking ID. Apparently was posted 8/1 and left HK on 12/1. Not sure how much longer it will be. :(

  • I'm clueless about torches, can someone tell me the differences between this torch and the torches on eBay like this:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cree-XM-L-T6-LED-Flashlight-Torch…

    • +2

This is cheap chinese torch, I still have one that claim to have 3800 lumens but actual may be closer to 500 lumens. Better branded torchlight like Nitecore, Fenix, Olight claimed lumens are more accurate, if they say it is 860 lumens, it is most likely to be true.

      • +4

        Thank you for replying.

        • +11

those cheaper ones are the gateway drug to more expensive ones.
          trust me!

        • +1

Tell me about it… I bought a cheap one and absolutely loved it. Can't wait to try this one out now!

        • +1

I started it off 5 years ago and $3500 or so later I have slowed down. I have been given away many torches to family and friends. I still have a dozen or so spread around the house; some I don't know where. This torch is one of 3 in the last few months. It is addictive alright.

        • I also admit to a OB-triggered torch accumulation disorder. Sure, i could get treatment, but that would cost more than the torches themselves.

  • +1

Hmmmm still waiting on my EA4 from the previous deal, they said they ran out of stock.

Also couldn't see it stated anywhere on the site, is this Neutral white or Cool White?

    • It says XM-L U2 so I would assume its the Cool White.

Did you get any shipping notice from the other one? They have had them back in stock for a while now.

      • Yeah they sent an email a few days ago, I said I was happy to wait for stock, but with this deal being $10-15 cheaper I'll reconsider in the morning.

      • This is correct, T6 emitter would likely be natural white (preferred tint by most)

      • -2

Would imagine the hotspot would be a bit strong though - I'm looking for a nice natural light LED torch for photography, but multiple LEDs is where it's at - I don't understand everyone raving about this one. There'd have to be a very clearly defined hotspot in the middle…

I'm with dylanando on this one…

        • +1

It's a search light, it is meant to have a clearly defined hotspot. Go buy a flood light for photography.

        • -1

Or buy this light and a piece of cloth or an umbrella

        • -3

My phone honestly works as a searchlight in the dark. Different strokes though, I'm sure someone would think me crazy for dropping hundreds on lenses.

I'm not looking for a photography flash or studio light - basically, trying to freeze something during a long exposure in the dark on the cheap.

This is an example of what I mean - the picture's pretty average, but if you know a bit about photography, you'll know what I'm talking about:

          http://photoshoptutorials.ws/images/stories/Photography%20Tu…

        • +1

You might like a warm or neutral with a lot of flood.

If this was the neutral version you could use a diffuser to eliminate the hotspot. The head is 40mm so this is a good fit.
          http://www.intl-outdoor.com/white-soft-silicone-flashlight-l…

I don't think the cool version will be very good for photos, it would give similar results to shooting under fluorescent lighting.

Perhaps something with a single AA and a warm LED and a smaller diffuser would be good for you.

If you are familiar with CRI the Nichia 219 LED's have the highest CRI (for LED's) on he scale as far as I am aware. They give the best colour rendition of any other LED available.

You can see a sample of the different LED colour renditions here:
          http://budgetlightforum.com/node/12940#comment-239187

Here is a affordable AA light with a Nichia 219 LED:
          http://www.sbflashlights.com/L3-Illumination-L10-Colors-Nich…

That price does not include shipping.

I am considering buying one for myself for photos as well.

I'm not in anyway a professional when it comes to camera lighting though, but it is a recent interest of mine.

        • I think you misunderstand what searchlight means… Can your phone light up things 200m away? This designed to search for things at a distance, not up close, hence the high lumen ratings.

        • @Andy, what you are attempting to it's called diffused lighting, that can be achieveable with a bounce flashcard and not a searchlight.

          search·light
          /ˈsərCHˌlīt/
          Noun
A powerful outdoor electric light with a concentrated beam that can be turned in the required direction.
          Synonyms
          spotlight - floodlight - projector - reflector

a torch like this is meant for throwing light across long distance (100-200meters) and is very applicable if you are caught in a highway at night with your car battery dead. The light on your phone is not going to be sufficient to warn off incoming cars coming at (usually in excess of) 110km/hr.

I think it is extremely stupid to argue the uselessness of a tool, if a product that is totally useless, no one would buy it. If there is a demand for it, it means someone has use for it.
"Declaring" it as useless just means that you have no idea what other applications the product can do beyond you own scope of comprehension/imagination.

        • -1

          I quote myself:

"Different strokes though, I'm sure someone would think me crazy for dropping hundreds on lenses."

          So what's the issue?

And when did I use the word "useless"?

  • +1

    No EA4w :(

    • +1

      Yep, natural tones FTW

  • +1

Got one from the last deal, am blown away by the build quality and throw of this thing. My first decent torch, have ordered a Thrunite T1 for something more portable and will probably get something bigger in the future.
The fact it uses AA's is a huge plus for me.

Torch tech has come a long way in recent times.

    Worth every cent.

    • Did you figure out how to put it on turbo (half click and hold)?

At first the UI was confusing, but I got used to it over time.

  • -1

    the thing is:

how would I trust an Chinese website selling Genuine torch?

    • I dare say it hasn't been around for long enough for copies to have emerged yet?

I think it was released last month.

    • Check the OPs links too.

    • +1

If your worried about getting something else like a counterfeit light I doubt they are gonna go to that much trouble. As for recieving the packaging I am guessing it would be sent registered w/tracking and you are PayPal protected.

    • that's why you have to come on ozbargain and see feedback of members?

  • Sounds freaking cool….wish there was a way to mount it on my bike.

  • finally something useful for all my eneloops?!
    cheers

    • man.. eneloops are so versatile! how could you not find a good use for it?
it can be used for wii controllers, dymo labellers, torches, braun in-ear thermometers, adult toys, kids toys, weighing scales.

i'm going to make sure all the stuff i buy for my kid is going to take AA batteries only. ;)

btw, most led torches will burn through AAs within an hour plus at the max rated lumens.

my sunwayman lasts 49days at the lowest setting that I used as a night light (so I don't stub my toe in the dark when I get up). awesome torch.

  • Lowest mode is 65 lumens.. too damn bright!
Also too much throw for the average user, great price tho.
Was in BigW the other day looking at some of the laughable flashlights they had for this much money.
The again a ~$5-7 Sipik clone is better than the $50 lights they had

  • -1

    thanks, ordered.

    helllooooo ladies.

  • +2

I got one in the last deal, I keep waiting for night just so I can show anybody how good they are'. Cranky that this deal has come up so soon.

    • +11

Now you have the chance dual wield.

  • I need some advice. How does this torch compare to something like the following that uses 18650 batteries? The below torch was recommended to me in a different thread for use as a tradesman crawling under houses. (Obviously I'd need to buy the 18650 batteries and charger as well.)

"TrustFire TR-1200, DealExtreme has a fairly competitive price. http://dx.com/p/trustfire-tr-1200-cree-q5-wc-5-mode-1200-lum…

USD$34.50, which I believe is the best value torch on DealExtreme.
It takes 3x 18650 batteries and is very powerful. It can also take 2x batteries I find that the brightness is very similar but you'll get more time out of each charge approx 1 hour 10 mins if you use all 3 batteries."

    • +4

I would rather go with this offer than the Trustfire for a few reasons:
      1. AA over 18650
      2. One emitter over five Q5 emitters (old tech)
      3. Nitecore over Trustfire
      4. Mode changes and ui is better with the Nitecore
      5. I believe to 1200 lumen is over rated and should bessimilar to in brightness to Nitecore

      • +1

The only thing I did not like with Nitecore is to turn off where the battery does not get drained, you have to press around more than 1 second. I forgot to do this and it just drains your battery if you leave it. Mine drained in 3-4 weeks. You would think a standard turnoff button should be in place. If you were a tradesman, my guess is you will turn on and off your torch and you want it quick but be sure you bring extra batteries.

        • Thanks- good advice.

        • parasite drain is always present in gadgets that doesn't have a switch to physically separate the contacts. I think the only way to mitigate this is to jump on those sparkly eneloops deal that comes on ozbargain once in a while. ;) The beauty of AA torches is that you can choose not to wait and pop by the nearest shops to get them.

  • -3

    sorry I read Fleshlight

  • Thanks for posting this :)

Bought a EA4W last time and have just bought a cool white this time.

  • +6

I just bought this fella. not that I have any need for it at all

  • +1

Freaky. I ordered the warm white from the previous deal and received the email a week ago that they are waiting for the stock. Then I saw this deal a few minutes ago and was considering it because of the price (even though this is cool white).

Was getting ready to cancel the purchase from the previous deal when the receptionist walked over to my desk with the delivery of the warm white. Talk about timing :)

  • The code doesn't seem to work.

Gift certificate code says it's invalid.

    • +1

it goes in the coupon box not gift certificate, click ' have you got a coupon?' I think it said.

      • Thanks I see it now on the phone missed it.

  • -2

ec25 cobra is a much better torch.
    Better quality
Blue led to find it in your bag ground etc even when off.
    Crystal lens
    Longer battery life

    • Price difference?

    • +2

On your comment "much better" I was wondering whether you have both torches?
      EC25 uses CR123 batteries.

    • +2

It's pretty much the same torch but uses lithium cell/s rather than Ni-MH, alkaline, etc.

I'd rather stick with a "safe" battery, like Ni-MH AA's for an everyday torch like this. Don't want a 18650 potential bomb sitting in the console of my car.

      • +1

Don't want a 18650 potential bomb sitting in the console of my car.

So i shouldn't be shunting 14500's into this thing then…

You just made me swap a 14500 with a AA in the little torch i carry with me. Don't ever think you don't impact the world buddy…

  • +3

    Damn you Ozb! purchases torch

  • Just wanna comment that I have this torch and it is great in my opinion. Very bright and feels good quality. It has a few modes, not just on and off.
Note: I don't have many other similar type of torch to compare, but at least I feel I don't get ripped off.

  • Is this torch any good for camping? Just me, mum and the boy. If I should be looking at a cheaper version can someone post a link. Only ever had dolphin torches lol.

    • You won't regret if you can put up with lot of attention from on looker at camp site.

    • I would recommend a flooder type torch for camping, such as the Sky Ray King.
I bought one a few months ago and it's unreal, 2500 lumens, turns night into day.

  • Reminds me of this:
    http://what-if.xkcd.com/13/

  • Got one. Don't have a torch, so this looks like a good investment.

  • how does it compare to this light? few hundred less lumen but much cheaper. will this actually output 600 lumen?
    http://www.fasttech.com/products/1601/10002385/1174500-ultra…

    edit: or this one?
    http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10001854/1134205-ultrafir…

  • +1

Damn it, I didn't wake this morning and think 'damn, I need a new torch'. Bloody OzB.

    /purchased.

  • I'm still figuring out what would I use it for but it's a good deal !

    • +1

      seeing at night

      • I rarely go out at night and even I do the place I'm living is urban area. Even though, I bought one just before it was sold out , just in case I need it in my next travel exploring dark caves or bush area

  • +2

Yeah this is a great deal. I bought this on the older deal and it's the brightest torch I've ever had. It does have a blue LED to find it in the dark, tons of modes and great for checking out the nightlife in trees etc.

I wasn't aware of the it's water-proof properties but hey that just makes it better!

  • Been hunting around for a good price for this since I missed out on the last deal for this torch, thanks!

  • Temporarily sold out.

  • Bah…thats what I get for flinching at buying something I don't need.

  • +1

If you missed out just get this:
    http://www.fasttech.com/products/2/10000824/1070300-pocket-3…

More than enough lumens for the average person and only $1.99
I doubt most people here are gonna need a SAR light

    • $1.89 if you apply the code. :)

    • I carry one of these around.

Nice little torch - cute zoom, multi function.

  • I've ordered one but a little concerned after reading the review. Will it be ok for home/ general use?

    • If it is too bright, just bounce it off a surface or place a diffuse filter over it.

      • I've bought a fenix aod-m diffuser to go along with it.

    • It has 5 brightness levels from Ultra-Low (65 lm) to Turbo (860 lm). Just use it in Daily mode: Ultra-Low to High (550 lm).

  • thanks for the info.
