  • Any good compared to the 360 camera or the other popular brand version 12?

    • +3

I'm not too sure about the 360, but I find this better than the GoPro 12 Black in terms of picture, battery lasts longer and it does not overheat so easily like the Hero12, the GoPro has a better sofware, but I didn't think it was worth the extra money for it.

      • +1

DJI action 4 heaps better than gopro. Gopro is no longer the market leader. Was great 10 years ago…

        • Gopro was the ONLY option 10 years ago.
They've had freezing, overheating, and battery issues back then too. The fact there wasn't any competition was really why they were the leader. They've basically done the Kodak of modern times, and failed to pivot with new tech or create smart business decisions.

          • @Deadalready: I guess you are right meanwhile I got gopro hero 4 lying around dunno what to do with it. How you repurpose? I'm thinking get a suction holder as dashcam but the unit doesn't recycle space and doesn't turn off automatically

What I don't like most about whole DJI ecosystem is v patchy, if not downright skeptchy app support - in case of the Osmo you need to "activate" the camera via an app, and for Android that app is not available from the PlayStore (at least not until recently) and you need to sideload it. It was on PlayStore but G took it down. Doesn't inspire tons of confidence tbh.

another reason why i switched from android to apple, lol.

i switch from go pro and osmo almost every year, and i actually like osmo better. i have no issues, but im on an iPhone and iPad.

      • +7

Because of dji? That tells us everything we need to know about your intelligence 🤣🤣

        • Spotted the CCP agent.

There was a reason their apps were removed from the play store.

    • +4

I have zero issues dealing with the Osmo app on Android, not sure what's the big issue on it.

      • +1

The real issue is that there was never a clear reason why they went the side load path. There's plenty of reasons and it doesn't inherently make them dodgy just look at epic games for examples but they never really game us one…

I personally side loaded the osmo app activated the camera then uninstalled it without any real issues but it's still a question of why.

        • Fair enough, they eventually put it up on Play Store at least.

          • @hotori: I'll admit hadn't looked for the app since I bought close to a year ago. Being back on is enough for me to shrug it off and say all good but I generally don't stress too much about "muh personal data" it's all everywhere for sale.

    • +2

The DJI Mimo app was banned from Google Play Store because it was basically a open portal for the CCP to look into your phone.

Somehow it has been allowed in Google Play now.

I got really stuck on holiday because I used up my 5 'non-registered' device turns and not knowing the Osmo Action (3) is BRICKED until you download DJI Mimo and register.

    • +2

Dji make good stuff but they're dodgy AF. Google won't allow the app onto the play store and DJI won't change what needs to be changed for Google to allow it. . The iPhone can't sideload apps so they've removed the dodgy shit from the iPhone version. Good thing is that once you've activated the camera you don't need to keep the app installed. If you've got an old phone you don't care about you can always install it on that and uninstall it after it's activated.

    • Insta360 too expensive

  • +1

Just used it on a trip to Japan, I think it's a decent casual camera to use. Good microphone out of the box, videos look nice.

    • What kind of videos do you take when you travel? I like the idea of an action camera but I find I generally just end up using my phone most of the time.

      • +4

So, I rented a car and got some really nice shots as a pseudo-dashcam type of thing. Got some nice shots of driving through the country-side and some epic roads in the mountains.

Other than that, I took some decent videos of some tourist nature sites, me hitting some baseballs at a batting cage and some town stuff.

I don't really use my phone to take videos of anything longer than 1 minute because of memory/battery issues.

I would see there's a strong chance you don't really use it a lot, I really liked it mostly because of the car shots….

      • +1

They're more versatile than a phone. Walkthroughs in cities or major landmarks, then I wear it as a head strap and use it for a bike ride, chest mount for a walking shot or running activity, mount it on a car like the other commenter mentioned. Lots more options

One thing i prefer over my phone, I've found the video stabilisation is very good with this. I've not got much else to compare to, but either using Gyroflow or the built in stab, I think it looks really good, very user friendly. Here's a vid when I took this travelling earlier this year:

My friend has said many times, "Buying an action camera, doesn't buy an action lifestyle".

The majority of people have phones that rival or beat action cameras. Unless you're going to be creative with your camerawork or doing a sport, it's better to just use the phone.

Otherwise buy them cheap off FB marketplace, they're basically new with heavy discounts.

  • No love for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2? I've been juggling between that and an X5, yes there's a big price difference, but the X5 feels like a nice camera to hold to shoot videos.

    • +1

@chillipaste Depends what kind of footage you want to shoot.

Ive been using the 360's since the original Insta360 (ver 1 I guess) but also have the Go Pro. For most situations I'd rather use the Go Pro style camera just due to less work needed after you shoot.

You'll also get higher quality video on the AP2 than the X5.

      • That's good to know. I'm mainly shooting travel videos with the family including kids. So tends to be wider angle shots but shooting at the kids eye level to get a great perspective.

I think the idea of editing the 360 shots to get the cuts and angles I want sounds incredibly onerous.

But x4 can be shot in single lens mode, which sounds kinda attractive. And it's compact body with display screen is helpful, rather than holding a big phone.

I just shoot with my phone, angled right and just edit those.

And knowing the action cameras actually have better quality videos than the 360s is another added strength.

        • +1

@chillipaste If you just want great quality travel videos and you're not going to be doing tricks and fancy shots, I'd rather go with the Ace Pro 2.

The extra editing really is a lot of work and it's much easier to just film what you like as you go.

Single lens mode just cuts off a lens and won't give you that extra resolution so will be lower than the 4k resolution you'll get on true 4k cameras.

I shoot with multiple cameras and if I want to film something directly and it's the only thing I'm using, then the 360 camera is usually my last choice.

However, I shoot with a SLR often for events and so I also carry the X4 when shooting as it lets me grab no effort video, which I can go back and scroll through and edit and pull out what I need. No other camera will let me do that, so that's one big reason I keep it, but that won't be the case for 99% of the action cam users.

  • +4

I only have the Action 3, it's up to 5 now.

I am very impressed by the video stability (skiing videos).

Accessories are expensive so buy the knock off ones on AliExpress.

Used mine a bunch mostly for cycling but also have it in my pocket to quickly take videos of my kids.

  • Comes pre-bricked until you register with China, then they give you permission to use the camera you bought.

  • These are on sale because DJI is about to drop a couple of new cameras in July. I'm hanging out to see how the new two new DJI 360 cameras coming.

  • had both, still got my gopro 13. It's a better camera and better software.

Not a fan of having to install an app to get this camera to run. Same as the drones, need to be logged in to fly further than 50 metres away from yourself. Their persistent need to spy on you puts a kink in every product they sell.

  • I own 5 and 4. The voice activation on the 4 is terrible compared to the 5. I paid $280 for the 4 but wish I just bought another 5. Totally worth the extra coin. The 5 is a stunning camera for fishing and on the water.

    • As in never works or sometimes works?

      • The distance isn't good when detecting voice. If you had a long selfie stick it wouldnt work with voice. Only solution would be is to buy the DJI watch but the quality is bad apparently

  • Expired deal?
Every time i try an ebay coupon deal or Sydney mobile deal it never comes up as advertised.
Says code isn't valid on item and item is 360 something dollars

    • Might have. Only 1 left anyway.

      Shows a $81 off w ebay plus.
