Why are these 400 bucks when jaycar sells 4k cameras for as low as 100 and less when on sale? I am wanting to put together a set atm and some of the jaycar ones have decent reviews (concord brand ones)

Because it has a versatile UniFi protect apps with AI features baked in, if you are into the Unifi ecosytem.

For value and descent features Reolink is good, for unifi ecosystem and some more features then unifi. End of the day you get what you pay for, both in hardware and software updates/features.

    • I'd double check the 4k sessor, there's a huge difference between sensors, some perform better in more lighting scenarios for example. Most cheaper cameras are terrible for anything at night.
I'm not familiar with the Jaycar ones specifically, but at the $100 range they likely don't have face / ai detection features, also likely won't see as far in the dark.

AI detection saves a lot on disk space, because you get less overall false positives requiring more storage of "events" event detection is hard and the basic methods mean you have hours of video of the shade or trees swaying and nothing else. So you're paying more up-front to save your effort in review & disk space requirements.

The cheaper cameras can be great for basic setups, especially if you’re on a tight budget. But Ubiquiti’s products are aimed at a different market — more prosumer/SMB level, with a focus on seamless integration, reliability, and long-term support. Its sort of like with Apple products, once you get in you just keep buying more :D

      As of the cost:
      - True 4K sensor with better low-light performance
      - AI detection for people, vehicles, license plates
      - Fully weatherproof & vandal-resistant build (IP66, IK04)
      - Tight UniFi Protect integration — no app fees, no cloud storage fees, super slick interface
      - Enterprise-grade firmware support and updates from Ubiquiti
      - Scales easily with other UniFi gear

If you’re building a larger or more secure setup, or just want something that’ll just work for years, the Unify product are a strong investment. But if you're after something basic for a shed or garage, those Jaycar cams could absolutely do the job too 👍

    • I’ll add that Ubiquiti has no official Australian distribution. So all the products sold here are purchased overseas and resold by local importers who add their own markup.

        [Leader Systems] (https://leadersystems.com.au/)

        • Streakwave is better ;)

      • There are distributors as some of the products have AU versions (i.e. UCG-Fiber). Some stores may have imported directly from the states, but then you get US version (with an adapter). Cameras, probably doesn't really matter that much since most Ubiquiti are all PoE based (only exception is the instant line).

However, it would be good for Ubiquiti to sell direct to AU. Retails and distributers do add their markup and prices can vary a lot on the same product.

        • "However, it would be good for Ubiquiti to sell direct to AU. Retails and distributers do add their markup and prices can vary a lot on the same product."

100%. I am quite surprised that Ubiquiti is still relying on Leader as their Aussie distributor rather than selling directly like they do in so many other countries. They have half a dozen international web stores but Australia is still waiting for one.

As a result, the prices here in Oz are SIGNIFICANTLY higher than in other regions where there is no middle men taking a cut.

          • @djz: Our market is still too small for Ubiquiti. Hikvision and others have a significant market share here and I reckon UniFi Protect is able to hook customers into UniFi's ecosystem better than just UniFi Network alone.

It's annoying to buy Ubiquiti products from various retailers. The most annoying thing is a lot of the retailers refuse to price match when I asked, but they then lower the price a few days later. Also, there can be a bit of lottery at times (same product, one retailer sells the US version, another sells the AU version).

      • So all the products sold here are purchased overseas and resold by local importers who add their own markup.

Just wondering, if there was a distributor here wouldn't that be one more layer of markup?

why the downvotes? It's a legit question, and it gives us a chance to provide education - because ubiquiti gear (and protect) rules. :)

      • It's easy for people to neg vote a comment on OZB (no need to provide a reason).
Buying Ubiquiti gears is likely buying Apple products. It has its pros and cons. They do cost a fair amount (and the AU prices aren't great).

      • Bloody oath, what's wrong with people?

The Unifi Protect ecosystem has without doubt the best software in the business. Their mobile, desktop and even Apple TV apps are also superb. Their cameras have improved dramatically but their night vision is still far behind some of the astounding colour night vision that you can find with Hikvision and Uniview.

I want to change my old Hikvision cameras soon but I am torn between the Unifi ones for the better software and firmware vs the Hikvision/Uniview with MUCH better colour night vision and hardware but very mediocre software.

    • For me, the main reason to go UniFi Protect is the mobile app is easy to use enough for family members who knows very little about tech. Ubiquiti is smart as you pretty much have UniFi Network included when you use Protect. By making you use UniFi Network as well, there is a high chance you will get UniFi network gears or slowly convert your network devices into UniFI ones.

Unifi protect rules! I recently found the Google/Android TV app (I don't know how), so now I can see the camera feeds on my TV. I don't know how long the app had been out, I didn't even know about it until I stumbled upon it. :)

    • Have to install it. Just recorded my udr7 few days ago. Very happy with it so far. Got relink cameras with nvr so thought I didnt need to install it.

    • What is the actual name of the app?

      • Meant received. The app is unifi protect

      • Unifi Protect

For the price you can get 2 dahua that blow this to dust. Ubiquiti may be good for their networking range but not camera. Just don't put them in your bedroom.

    • The equivalent Dahua is probably the DH‑IPC‑HDW5842T‑ZE‑S3 where can I get 2 of these for less than $400?
