How Much Are Your Electricity Bills Going up (NSW) ?

I'm currently with Engie. Just received a letter stating my power bill is increasing. (No surprises there since the wholesale price has increased recently).

My peak/offpeak/ancillary rates have increased about 10%, which is okay.

My supply charge has increased a whopping 23%, from $1.16 to $1.49 per day. Not so okay.

As a low power usage, once person household, this will definitely result in the most substantial increase in my overall power bill.

I have churned providers in the past and looked for retailers with the lowest supply charge (my biggest cost) but prices and offers are constantly changing with different companies. It's almost like they intentionally muddy the waters in complexity so the average consumer gives up and stays with the same provider for a lifetime. Also, Engie being a small retailer, one would assume their prices are already at the lower end of the spectrum, compared to the bigger retailers such as Origin or Energy Australia.

Any advice? Thanks

Yeah I got a similar email/notice from Origin as well…really not loving it atm but also struggling to find a competitive alternative.

They always get us with the "supply charge". It's an easy cash-grab.

$1.49 per day supply charge is insane isn't it? Mine is increasing to $0.895xx from $0.814xxx and that's Origin but as another poster said, having trouble finding anything really cheaper. FIT is also decreasing for supply over the first 14kwh from $0.05 to $0.03. Anyone with solar really needs to look at a battery now IMO.

I recently switched to Globird. Their rates have just increased by approx 25% so what I hoped would be a long term relationship will now be very short term. Will use one of the cashback offers to switch to another provider - even though it's a pain it pays to churn energy providers and maximise signup offers, similar to credit cards.

  • Im with agl.. also increase rate to 73.2c and reduce feed in to 10c in… nsw.
Any better provider that give high feed rate?

  • Engie new supply charge $2.57873 per day.

    • About what I was quoted by 1st Energy two weeks after signing up to a cashback deal. I won't be getting the cashback because I immediately noped out of those extortionate new rates and churned.

  • One person household here as well, currently with Red Energy (Essential Energy, regional NSW) - supply charge going from $1.45/day to $1.98/day, so a 36% increase. All TOU rates are going up too, with the two highest increases being off-peak (going up 20%), and Controlled Load 1 (for the HWS) going up 30%. Solar FIT going down of course from 5c to 4c.

I’ve done comparisons on the Energy Made Easy website but unfortunately all the providers offering plans in this area have the notation that their prices are going up as of 1 July, so it’s going to be impossible to do a proper comparison until all the new prices are out.

Are you with Woolworths Everyday Rewards and if so, did you get an email offer to join Origin Energy with bonus ER points?

      • +2

I am with Everyday Rewards, have been for many years, but I didn't get the Origin Energy offer email.

Just had a look and found the Origin offer in the EDR app. I went through the details, but it's a variable rate offer which means the prices aren't fixed and they're going to go up on 1 July, so there's no way of knowing whether the Origin prices will be better or worse than Red Energy's new prices. Whilst most of the prices on the offer are similar to what I'm paying now, the Controlled Load rate also has a separate daily supply charge attached to it, which makes it even higher than what I'm paying now (and assume that will go up too on 1 July).

          They are vastly better.

Source: I signed up and my new rates were emailed to me. I am only on single rate though if that changes anything.

      • For every origin plan with ER points, they will have a similar plan with no ER points, and that plan will be cheaper by roughly the value of the points.

But you should check the exact prices as for some usage patterns it could be worth it to pay more and take the points

I tried tango energy for postcode 2000, it gives me 104.5c daily and 36.5c/kwh flat charge. I've been with them for a while and they're among the lowest for power.

    • Yeah but is that their current rate or post July 1 rate?

    • I'm having a problem with their website not loading. Anybody else?

      • Works well for me.

  • With AGL on Special Saver (customer retention offer), Ausgrid network:
    32.142c/kWh usage
    4c/kWh feed-in
    89.798c/day supply

    • That's a good deal. Lucky you can get it. The rest of us are screwed lol

    • That's a good one. Is that 32c peak?

      • Yep, it's a single rate tariff.

        • ok. That's a real good one

Our area increased from 81c to 1.03c for daily rate and 31c to 36c per kW. This is with AGL. Very unhappy with the increases year on year. I've considered converting all our windows to double glazed and only electric blankets. No more space heaters.

Privatisation of the energy grid made it less efficient and more expensive. Apparently 2 HK billionaires own most of Energy Australia and managed hundreds of billions in revenue yet paid $0 tax in 2023.

I really hope we stop privatising everything. Definetly not healthcare. I sometimes also wonder if it's a ploy with the Sydney train union that people get fed up and welcome privatisation. But we end up with worse off efficiency and more expensive fares.

    • You might be surprised to find that NSW distributors (Ausgrid, essential energy and endeavour) are the main perpetrators behind this price rise and they are ironically owned by the NSW government. It's the lack of public scrutiny and government greed that cause the price rise. In contrast vic has privatised all the energy retailers and distributors but their electricity has consistently been 15-20% cheaper. And they have even much better transparency around pricing.

  • My Dodo supply is going up 69% and the rates are going up 36%.

    This seems criminal to me!

    • These price rises are ridiculous! Glad i'm not the only one suffering. Don't know what the solution is apart from going off grid.
