I Built a Free QR Code Web Application

Hello all,

I built a QR code scanner software that works on any device.
Problem: If you receive QR codes on your device or your device does not have QR code scanning feature.

Let me know what you think or would like to see this open sourced.

You need to arrange your chicken nuggets better in there, and try putting squid rings in 3 of the corners.

I'll raise a bug for this one, thanks for letting me know

    • Did you trying turning it on and off?

Didn't work on my Atari 2600???

  • Cool, but what modem phone doesn't do QR codes in the camera app these days?

    • modem or modern?

    • True, most phones do.
But think of PCs or macbooks which might find it useful at times.
I personally was using online websites with a lot of ads and potential trackers, whereas this one has no ads, no trackers, just a good QR scanner.

New-ish android phones has circle to search and works for QR codes too

    • Thanks for this, just tested on my Nothing Phone, works great!!

  • My iPhone already does this. How is this useful ???

One way is if you receive QR codes as images, a lot of devices can't scan from an image.

      • How do you install it on the iPhone to be able to drag and drop it on the app on the iPhone?

        • On phones, it's click to upload.

          • @ultrondev: What do you mean? I cannot find a link to click on to install the app on an IPhone on the link you supplied.

            • @AndyC1: To use the app:
You'd select the photo with QR code on your phone by selecting "Choose File"
              https://ultrondevelopment-my.sharepoint.com/:i:/g/personal/a…

To install https://ultronqr.netlify.app/ as a web app on your iPhone, follow these short instructions:

              📲 iPhone Installation Steps (Safari)

              1. Open Safari
                Navigate to https://ultronqr.netlify.app using Safari.

Note: This only works in Safari on iOS.

              2. Tap the Share Icon
At the bottom of the screen, tap the square with an arrow pointing up (the Share icon).

              3. Choose "Add to Home Screen"
Scroll down the share sheet and select “Add to Home Screen.”

              4. Name the App (Optional)
You can edit the name that appears under the icon (e.g., “Ultron QR”).

              5. Tap “Add”
The app will now appear on your iPhone’s Home Screen like a native app.

iPhone can though, you can take a screenshot then hold the QR code to open from a PDF. For images, you can open them directly from camera roll.

        • There's another feature too, of generating QR codes, hopefully that's something you'll find useful? This one you can self host or run locally too and is fully open source.

    • Use it on your PC

      • My Mac already does this built in so I don’t have to worry about privacy implications of using a third party site.

        • If you are trying to find a reason to use it, I'd use it for QR code generation.
You can fully self host it on your local machine or use free vercel and netlify plans to host it too.

Why are you stressed about privacy for QR codes?

I don't believe Windows machines do it so they may want the app.

Thanks. Now I can drag QR code images into this while using my desktop and don't need to involve my phone in the operation.

One small improvement would be to allow pasting a url instead of just dragging an image or selecting one from your system.

Thanks for the feedback, added to the pipeline :)

    • The feature is live but haven't tested it fully.

Ultron Dev. The Utwig would be proud

  • Does it work on my original Nokia 3210 that I have in the bottom draw?

    • That's a good one, if you can run opera browser, then maybe?

Is it just me who thinks QR codes are going to have a very short life? You wouldn't click on a random link on the internet, but people are willing to follow QR codes with no idea where it's taking you.

    • True, they are a massive attack vector. Even worse, a lot of legit looking QR code generators online I've seen have been injecting malware after the QR code is generated.
As far as the life span, they are quite popular in Authenticator Apps, Wifi Sharing in here + Payments in a lot of countries so don't think they'll be going away soon.

  • I've updated the tool and made the project open source.
https://ultronqr.netlify.app/ now has QR generation and scan features.
For users looking to use this, I'll ensure this solution will
    1. Have no trackers like Google/Meta
    2. Work on any device except for some mentioned above that I'm looking to fix.

    https://github.com/ultrondevelopments/ultronqr/tree/main is the GitHub repo.

    Thanks for the feedbacks all.
